registration for the showcase opened for me
I still can’t get in.
I was able to register, definitely recommend to keep refreshing
We finally were able to register when we switched from the apple computer to a chromebook.
My son was accepted to Honors/Game Design major. We are OOS and far away - this is his #1 choice right now but I have some questions/reservations hoping for feedback from some veteran parents:
(1) school has a rep of being preppy/bro culture. He is the opposite - heavy metal t shirt long hair type of guy. Enjoys gaming (not into the esports/competitive side), guitar and low key hangouts. Will he stick out as an outlier or is the reputation/stereotype inaccurate.
(2) Honors: are the perks worth the extra work or no.
(3) For long weekends does the campus empty out completely - not feasible for him to come home for a 3/4 day break.
(4) Would love to hear the good, bad and ugly of his intended major especially internship/job outcomes.
We will be attending a Make it Miami session as well but I value the experiences of veteran parents. Thanks!
My son is a freshman from Virginia. He loves the school and is not the “bro” type. He lives in the Arts dorm and is in the Men’s Glee Club. He and his roommate each have a tv and gaming system in their room. I am going to send you a private message. My son is not majoring in Game Design, but I think I can connect you with someone who has 2 kids who are. The honors program gets the nicest dorms and priority class registration.
The school clears out somewhat on 3 day weekends, but my son didn’t come home and was fine with the people who were around. Travel has been the biggest “issue” for us as there isn’t a direct flight to Cincinnati from our closest airport. I think that he will take his car next year. He could have had it this year, but we wanted him focused on campus not driving other places.
He absolutely loves the school. The people are so nice, his roommate has been fantastic, his classes have been great. I really have no complaints at all. It’s been the perfect place for him.
When you come for “Make it Miami” make sure to take time to drive on High Street out to Kroger. Not because you need groceries, but to see that there is actually a cute brick street town center with a little park surrounded by bars and restaurants. There’s a Kroger and a Walmart and various other stores. He’ll likely only live on campus for 2 years, so see what the surrounding area is like. I think a lot of families drive thru corn fields straight to campus, tour, and drive out again thru corn fields thinking there is “nothing to do”. When in fact, there is enough of a town to support almost 20K students and all the faculty and support staff. It is not a city, but there’s plenty to do.
Here are a few links for him to check out:
League of Geeks. Umbrella Org for lots of “geeky” clubs. They hold parties and events throughout the year. There’s a 3 day Geek Con next month. He’s likely to find gamers in some of the clubs in this group
https://www.leagueofgeeks.org/about-us
The guitar club. Click thru the officer photos. There are long hair and Games/Sim students represented. He could certainly reach out to learn more.
This is the largest bar/club in town. It skews mostly country (I think). Might not be your son’s scene. But it shows that Miami isn’t a town in a corn field with nothing to do at night.
Finally, follow the student life insta. It is really helpful listing all the things happening soon campus.
Thank you so much for all of this - makes me feel a little better if he decides on Miami!
Does he want to be my S25’s best friend? We visited Miami this past week and I was surprised that my guitar playing, Megadeth loving (lord help me), son liked it so much. He also likes gaming, D&D, and general “nerdy” things. He felt like if he got into Farmer and Honors, it was a great fit for him.
Obviously he doesn’t attend but I did get the impression that the school is big enough for everyone.
They sound a lot alike!!
Did anyone who attended scholars showcase get this email today?

D24 did not receive the Presidential Scholarship. They did up her scholarship amount though so it is still very much a possibility.
