12 AP, SAT 1540 GPA 3.97/4.0 UW. I don’t know the weighted as the formula is funny at our school but high. No class rank. Sport-running XC and track (state qualifier and Captain of team). Applied for engineering. Strong extracurriculars.
Offered 5K per year, invited to apply for additional scholarships and Honors college as mentioned.

My kid got his invite for the ADS today but sadly I think he’s going to have to pass. It appears that they’ve gotten rid of the online option for OOS kids. It’s just too much $$$ for us to travel there for a one day trip. My ‘24 kid had the option of taking the exam online.
And, the essay portion only has one date option which conflicts with one of his ski races. There are only 5 races all year and I don’t think he’s willing to give up one.
So, I think that means MSU is not going to be in the mix anymore.

Anyone know the timeline of when invitations from Broad CoB starts?
Is it rolling or a specific date for EA and RD applicants?
I’m posting this for future parents and students with information regarding ADS. Son had already received admission to Honors, merit, and sent an invitation to consider changing into Lyman Briggs from Arts and Natural Sciences. When he received ADS invitation, he was hesitant for two reasons: time he did not have to write essays and unsure if he wanted to travel from OOS through ice/snow. He was not sure that ADS would be worthwhile because he didn’t think that he would end up as a finalist.
With encouragement, we said the ADS competition is just bonus. The bigger picture is whether he wanted to visit the campus to check out Honors and Lyman Briggs.
The ADS essays were done in advance. He actually liked one of the questions, got to show some creativity. The one question reminded him of the UMD supplemental questions that are more fun to write and not just “why us” essay. The actual test he reported was “stupid difficult” in some parts but only because he felt like he had learned quite a bit of it through his AP classes and general knowledge but clearly didn’t remember past the class.
Lastly he said the event was super well organized. He felt welcomed and that MSU did a good job in conveying the vibe of the school. Lyman Briggs is something that is intriguing to him where the classes are smaller with easy access to professors in one building which may be great for a first year student but unsure if living in that tight knit quarters would makes sense for additional years. He said surprisingly the school food was good, and despite coming from a warm climate (literally a 90 degree difference in wind chill between home and MSU) he said with proper clothing he was fine with the cold.
Lastly what may be another selling point for him to keep MSU on the table for consideration is that students do not need to declare a formal major until year 2. This is important because it suggests flexibility and understanding the most students have no idea what they are doing when they choose a major upon application.
In all – to future families looking for information about ADS / Lyman Briggs / Honors – go to the ADS competition if you are invited. It’s worth the time. It might not be for all, but for a son who has other options, this may just have bumped up MSU near the top when his interest had been waning and waxing with this school. Overall vibe is a school that values collaboration and is very friendly, no elitism experienced. The high acceptance rate of MSU does not equal less rigorous programming.
S26 was deferred in Feb round and got admit in Mar 3rd week and they bumped up the merit scholarship.
Now if only he likes Supply Chain compared to Finance as a major.
