Residential Business Community

The RBC is a living learning community within the Broad College of Business at Michigan State University.

From last year’s thread first round was on Feb 11 which was a Saturday with email notification saying there was a status change. Second round was Apr 17. Nothing posted with stats.

Secondary admission path to Broad if we don’t get selected in the first Mid FEB or second round Mid APR…

For the sake of future readers of this thread, my S24, 3.992 GPA, TO, 5APS, decent extra curriculars, applied as a Business Preference major at U Pitt, MSU and Western Michigan University all in early October. If you are interested in Broad, make sure you apply early to other business programs at other schools so that you know you are already in somewhere because the wait will be long for Broad. He’s been accepted to both other programs with a full merit scholarship ($100K) to Western. The scholarship was a shock because he wasn’t invited into MSU’s Honor’s Program. Don’t overlook the less prestigious schools! Good luck!

Congrats! That’s a fabulous offer!

I agree that the wait for Broad is long! Anybody thinking maybe the portal will change on Friday (9th) with an email on Saturday (10th)?

Last year emails were on Saturday the 11th. I bet nobody was checking portals regularly because no one knew when to expect the announcement.

I agree that this will likely be the timing for the 1st round!

thanks for the updates… I fear MSU Broad will loose students to the recent wave of other B10 biz school admits… hope we do see some movement soon… the two waves are painful , agreed.

PSU DUS @ UP is going to be hard to top…even for a kid who wants to study SCM…no Broad and MSU is off the table.
Still waiting an RD decision on OSU Fisher… #1 choice since our visit last spring…

Are you all doing admitted student days for all of the schools you are still considering?
I can’t believe MSU’s big day is not until April! And I can’t tell if they are doing something special for direct admit Broad kids.

We are heading to IU for the first round of DA days for Presidents Day weekend. I suspect they will put on a pretty great show. It’s going to be tough to then wait 6 weeks to see MSU. Maybe if we hear positive news in February, we can go to one of the regular admitted student days. But that is not going to give a fair comparison if he gets the big rah rah experience at one school and a glorified tour and lunch at another.

We do plan to do the Admitted Student Days at U Pitt and now also at Western. I agree the experiences will not be a true equal experiencing of each school. I’m glad we’ve narrowed down to three schools so that we don’t have as much information to gather.

We’re headed to University Park during the long Pres. Day weekend… considered a UT-K visit but still on the DEF listing until end of month…not planning to visit MSU (?Broad) and
IU ( Kelley unlikely). OSU Fisher is still the target.

Gosh we hope the first round comes out this Friday; think that would ultimately win my son’s allegiance. He just wants to be DONE and has a Mich State soph (from his HS soccer team) filling his ear on how awesome Michigan State is in every way. We still await IU Kelley petition review, but honestly, he’s leaning toward scholarship, value, and hopefully some ā€˜balance’ at MSU. Pitt is still on our radar too; the price differential between the MSU and Pitt is large for us though.

Is his high school friend, now MI State soph in the business program at MSU? What does his friend say about what is awesome about it? Would love to hear. My son is also deciding between MSU (hopefully) and Pitt and is so stressed and demoralized as friends are getting into higher ranked schools he now wishes he would have applied to. I keep telling him MSU and Pitt are excellent and potentially a perfect fit for him. Ideally, they are also more balanced, as you say. This process is really doing a number on him.

Happy to share my limited insight here. My son’s buddy was an engineering student, with a big scholarship at MSU. He is in a frat, in intramural sports and is giving solid tips/social scoop - like which frat to avoid for hazing, etc. He said Broad School is well respected on campus, even a bit ā€œelevatedā€, mostly is in his ear about how much he has loved his student body and campus experience…but def has built up business school as being well respected and full of great kids. Don’t think that helps…but, we too acknowledge that the overall ranking might not reflect my son’s hard work. BUT, MSU’s Broad School ranking is solid - 21 on USNews & World Report. Wisconsin is 17, not that far off really. Plus, SCM is #1 and Study Abroad is #2. Think MSU checks a lot of boxes; we don’t know until they get there for visit, weigh the 2 visits and of course he has his own experience; but don’t think my son is really looking to run with Ivy League kids academically; he’s a relationship builder, athlete, and social skills kind of guy who works really hard. I’m not worried about his life skills; but might worry about the pressure he’ll put on himself at one of those super high ranked schools. This may sound lame, but I follow Harlan Cohen on Instagram and he’s always reminding that ā€œwhat you doā€ where you are is what counts and exceptional; not the ā€œbrandā€ or reputation of the school. Tough to swallow during the admissions process, but a good reminder and perspective. Not sure I helped - but we have a lot to learn yet before we make our decision. #1 being if he gets into Broad…since its invitation not automatic based on credentials.

Just attended the Business exploratory webinar and they said last year they extended 500-600 invites for DA (reviewed 8,000). Lots of questions trying to pin down more information on DA…but they did say, the DA page will be updated when the first round goes out. They didn’t say HOW it will be updated on the page https://broad.msu.edu/undergraduate/admissions/direct/...I imagine something like an announcement that 1st round invites sent, check your admissions portals. Wish I had asked since they didn’t expand.

I thought the plan was to enroll 500 direct admits last year. But now they’re saying they only extended 500 to 600 offers?

That’s what they said on the webinar; but tbh their numbers didn’t make sense to me. Also note that they stated they really couldn’t say because they are ā€œlearningā€ and ā€œtweakingā€ as they go because DA is so new so got the idea this year may not look like last year. They wouldn’t say what their plan was or how many they were extending this year - avoided that question entirely. ā€œwhat we can tell you…is that last year, we extended 5-600; reviewed 8000ā€. 2023 freshman class was 9800 and about 20% are business majors.

I got some weird math from them at green and white days this summer. It was the same numbers you just quoted. What I am taking this to mean is … out of all the applications received by Michigan State, 8000 of them indicated business preference. Presumably, some number of those were not even admitted to the university. Some were admitted, but didn’t have the 3.5 gpa necessary to be reviewed for direct admission. But we have no idea how many of those 8000 were admitted to the university and have a GPA over 3.5. That’s one of the numbers we need. We would also need to know how many offers were actually made, and how many excepted and enrolled. I’m not sure we have any of those numbers! :joy:

I’m really not sure why they are being so vague about the numbers. I believe they have given numbers elsewhere for the percent being admitted through the secondary path.
