Here’s another question- Beyond visiting admitted student days, how are people doing research into schools to determine which is the best fit for your child. Are there good forums to hear from current students, does anyone visit classes? How can we ensure we really have a good sense of the school before committing?
some schools here have a separate post for “trip reports”… saw one for CU Boulder that had a suggested template of Qs for responders to complete… really like this idea… most schools have virtual tours posted for a visual feel, but the is no substitute for “boots on the ground”…
visited Purdue and it quickly fell out of love with it’s locale and things to do in the local area…YMMV (your mileage may vary)
Besides the admitted student days, we’ve asked relatives, close friends, and families we know well enough from middle and high school. Usually if someone loves their college (or happy with the one their kid attended), I’ve found the minute they know your kid is either really interested in applying or already admitted, they are excited to facilitate the connection to get further first hand information.
It is up to my kids if they are willing to follow-up with their second cousin once removed or the classmate one grade above etc but for most schools there is some connection because my kids are looking close enough to home that someone will know someone or they are looking close to where we have family.
Thanks so much. These are helpful ideas!
OOS TO DS24 applied to Supply Chain Management : MSU accepted: awaiting Broad decision.
Opinions on submitting requested deposit w/o Broad acceptance BEFORE the 01 May date?.. any advantages like earlier residential hall registration like many other schools?
NAME become a Spartan and let the adventure begin.
MSU is where you will find friends, make a difference and set yourself up for a successful future — with top-ranked programs, 1,000+ student organizations, and connections to more than half a million alumni worldwide.
Here are the next steps to reserve your place at MSU.
If you are a first-year student who wants to enroll for the fall semester, you will need to submit a deposit as soon as you have decided to enroll at MSU, and no later than May 1. Submitting your deposit holds your place in the incoming first-year class and automatically registers you for the required New Student Orientation.
Thank you so much! Mine got the invite in the mail. Thank you
Yay! Congratulations!!!
Quiet here…no posts in the new year yet?.. we’re awaiting a Broad school of business decision…OOS/ TO / Supply Chain Management.
I think the reason for that is that many applicants (not the Business School) received early acceptances within weeks of applying. MSU is very much in play as the school they may eventually attend (my son included) but admissions decisions for many have already been made. This leads to less activity on CC. Good luck to you!
I’ll chime in. My kiddo was accepted early on but did not get an invite to Honors as she hoped. So, the snow day tomorrow (our school already canceled due to wind chill) will be spent applying for the Honors College. We’re heading there Friday for the Admitted Students Day. I think if she gets into Honors, MSU is a top contender for her. If not, she will probably land at Purdue, but she is mulling over other choices as well.
We did not get honors either. When is the honors petition due? I think we need to do more research about honors … does anyone have info about how honors college might work with Broad? Can you take honors classes within Broad? Or does it mean your gen eds are honors?
From High School Admissions - MSU Honors College :
All materials must be submitted no later than Sunday, February 18th, 2024 for domestic students and Sunday, March 17th, 2024 for international students.
It seems there are many high stats/accomplished students that were admitted on the first day decisions came out that did not get the honors invite along with my D24. My S22 got the invite right away but did not attend and same for my oldest who just graduated a semester early this past Dec., but is still in EL working at the Capitol. They are all accomplished, but my daughter is an award winning writer and her essays weren’t even in the same league as her brothers, plus tons of leadership, 4 year varsity athletic captain, etc… so who knows how they make the decision. We all love MSU and it has been perfect for my son and the James Madison College with small classes and incredible professors, especially during the online freshman year was rigorous and outstanding. I think our time at MSU might be over, but if MSU is your child’s first choice and they write the essay and had a strong first semester it is worth it and they will be accepted!
Last year’s BROAD thread has only 29 comments… mid FEB and mid APR announcements made.
Feb 11 last year - email sent indicating status update
Anyone receive this yesterday?.. insight on if it went to all that applied for Broad or if it could be a positive indication of selection as a Business admit. TIA
Dear …student…,
Congratulations on your admission to Michigan State University! As you continue to pursue your educational and professional goals, please consider joining the RBC!
The Residential Business Community (RBC) is the Broad College of Business’ Living, Learning, and Leadership Community experience for business minded students. After you are admitted to Michigan State University and have activated your MSU Email, you may apply for admission to the RBC and for RBC first-year scholarships. (Apply Here to the RBC) The application for admission to the RBC is also the scholarship application.
My son received this as well. I doubt it means anything given that it includes a sentence which says they invite students to apply to the RBC to live there in preparation for admission to Broad.
thanks… figured as much… they did a great job promoting the RBC advantages… there are a couple of 200 word essays I’ve noticed…RBC selection after or before Broad admittance you think?
We did not get this. Do you know … what is the timeline for announcing if you are in the RBC, and do you have to pay housing deposit before you apply?
