Thank you for reaching out to our office and for your interest in Michigan State University!

The first round of direct admits is typically released in mid-February. You can find more information and dates about direct admission to Broad College of Business at the link below.

Many students choose the path of applying in their second year of attendance at MSU after they have completed the majority of their general classes.

Applicants are first reviewed by the MSU Office of Admissions for admissibility to the university, and then reviewed by the Broad College for direct admission. Students not admitted to Broad via the direct admission process can apply to the Broad College through the current student secondary admission process after matriculating to MSU.

your thoughts on OOS (CA) DS24 Broad college of business DA chances IF acceptance letter offers : $12k/yr Provost + $5k overseas scholarship… I’m a MIL VET and plan to use Post 9/11 GI Bill for part of DS’s fees… remaining year and a half will be billed at IN STATE rate!
IF we use GI bill first, he’s treated as in state for tuition purposes and looses the scholarships, boo… I know, 1st world problem… reaching out for ā€œcreativeā€ suggestions. TIA

I wish any if us here knew enough to chance your son! This DA program is too new. And when I asked a bunch of questions at Green & White Days to try and figure out how many kids were accepted and what the yield was … I did not get actual info in response.

In addition to not knowing if this is a reach or a safety, I am also concerned that we might not find out admission results until April. By which time we may have paid for housing elsewhere.
Would your son go to MSU if he isn’t direct admit? I am not sure our family has a bright line rule for MSU because they do take almost 1/2 of the kids in the secondary pathway. I would feel more comfortable if I knew how comeptitive that process is … but this will be the first year kids are applying in under the new system (with less than 1/2 as many slots available), and I don’t think those admission numbers will be out before we have to commit.

What does this mean in terms of numbers?

Ok I’m going off of memory here, so please take these numbers with a grain of salt …

I believe the Broad class size is approx 1,200/yr. Last year they brought in 700 as direct admit freshmen. Giving room to bring 500 in through the secondary pathway (applying druing freshman year), so that there is a full group of 1,200 by sophomore year.

The Broad rep said something along the lines of there were 8,000 students that applied pre-business for 700 spots. But, that doesn’t tell us - (1) how many of those weren’t even considered by Broad because they didn’t meet the 3.5 GPA cut off, or (2) how many were admitted. To fill those 700 spots did they have to make 1,400 offers or 3,500 offers? Of the 8,000 pre business were 7,500 over 3.5 or were 4,000 over 3.5? Because if only 4,000 are qualified and they made offers to 3,500–those are great odds (87.5%)! But if there were 7,500 qualified and they made 1,400 offers–that’s not looking good for us (18.7%).

So that’s my analysis of kids going in direct admit. For the kids applying once there … I have no idea how many kids apply during freshman year for those 500 open spots. I recall reading that back in the day if you did the LLC freshman year it really helped get you with the application process. I have no idea if that is still true.

Agree - it’s definitely all about the yield. I think they put themselves at a disadvantage for their yield if pushed until April. I would imagine the offers are on the higher side though knowing they are competing with the likes of UIUC and IU.

great observations… the secondary pathway (MSU/PSU/IU) is going to take a back seat if he gets DA to UTK-Haslam or OSU I think, SoCal kid won’t take kindly to MICH winters I fear… you nailed it… ā€œhow competitive is the secondaryā€ā€¦ thanks for your POV

IMO their big competition is IU. Specifically pulling away kids that are not DA to Kelley. If my son is DA at both … well, I still want to know more. Sounds like Kelley grading is tough. And even if you are DA, you are fighting to try and get a GPA that can get you into Kelley honors or a workshop spot. I don’t get the impression that Broad is the same way once you are in. Does anyone know anything about competitive clubs or grading curves at Broad?

I think U of I is so very hard to get into that they aren’t targeting the same kids as MSU. At our school I’ve heard of kids that got into Wisconisn for business, but not Illinois, and we are in Illinois. That said, my S24 applied to U of I (and Wisconsin) as a reachy-reach. Because … you never know!

Very true - we are Illinois residents and my son did not even try to apply business for same reasons. Kelley Honors and Workshops at IU isn’t necessary to be successful there - Kelley degree is very marketable regardless.

Does anyone know if the ADS competition are sent only to selected honor college students? My kid got the HC invitation with 5K scholarship but not invitation for ADS. Thanks

This was mentioned probably by a faculty member last week at MSU Facebook page. My DD received ADS invitation via snail mail but at that time her portal didn’t show anything indicating ADS. Some people could see ADS info in portal before snail mail so it seems each case may be handled differently?

ā€œADS invitations are sent on a rolling basis to students eligible for the Honors College for fall 2024 but there is limited space. We have a capacity of about 1200 student participants total - 600 for each Friday for the in-person days. We’ll be inviting students who are admitted to MSU and the HC by early next week to allow for adequate time to register.ā€

Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Does anyone know whether Broad looks at mid year senior grades as they decide on direct admits?

I don’t know. I would be surprised if they did, just based on volume and timing. Some high schools won’t release first semester grades until end of January.

Direct entry selection to Broad is a bit of a black box. I do know that they do not look at SAT or ACT scores. And there’s no essay about why you want to be in Broad. So I guess they’re going off 3 years of grades and your ECs? I recall reading somewhere they were looking for ā€œbusiness leadership.ā€ But I don’t know what that means in the context of 17-year-olds.

That makes sense to me, that they are probably evaluating applications already and just wait until February to really make sure they have a balanced group of students. The University of Pittsburgh has you apply directly and releases admissions quickly. He got in there, but I’m not as sure about Broad now. It’s ranked a little higher. We are in state for MSU. Would be a lot cheaper than Pitt. He honestly doesn’t have any ā€œbusiness leadership.ā€

Good luck! In-state tuition sounds awesome! We are OOS, but MSU is the cheapest option for us right now. I don’t think my kid has ā€œbusiness leadershipā€ either, but I also don’t actually know what that means.

Scholarships are given pretty liberally at MSU - hard to judge the criteria for Broad.

Seems they would be better served to have an essay prompt for Broad. ā€œBusiness leadershipā€ is pretty vague for high schoolers.
