Has anyone watched the documentary “Fed Up?” A lot of good information in it and the importance of fiber and its effect on weight loss.
Today I’m wearing the terrific black pants I couldn’t fit into earlier this year. Here is why the “middle age weight gain” made me feel so bad. I wasn’t trying to fit into pants I bought in 1998 or something…I bought these pants in 2014 and couldn’t fit into them!
Knitknee - I watched Fed Up with my two daughters just a couple of weeks ago. I’m gratified at how interested they are in eating well - they just need the right info! Since watching this, and That Sugar Film, which is pretty similar in message, no one has asked me to buy cookies, ice cream, or breakfast cereal. The only sweets currently in the house are a bar of dark chocolate & a bag of Cocoa Roast almonds. Younger D has discontinued her habit of ordering Dr. Pepper when we go out to dinner. DH is sticking with eggs for breakfast rather than Frosted Mini Wheats. I’m pretty excited about all of this!!
Sometimes 5 pounds makes the difference!! Wear them in style!!!
Five pounds does make a difference! Lately, I’ve been obsessed with the weight scale (which I know isn’t good) and I celebrate every ounce I lose and keep off.
This is the first summer I’ve actually lost weight. I attribute this to making changes in my eating habits and taking a more active vacation. Normally, my focus is food when traveling (picture following Guy Fieri on Triple D). This time, it was about walking. We walked almost 6 miles a day around DC for 6 days and then spent a week in Hilton Head riding bikes everywhere.
Don’t get me wrong, I ate some great food but i found I didn’t need to eat so much. And we drank water like crazy. I’d never felt so good. I will never have the body I once had, but I hope to be healthy from now on.
Rode this morning and beat my PB time by 6 minutes!
Still haven’t made any moves to get a new bike, but I’m thinking about it.
Kajon, I cannot eat whole eggs but do like an egg white scramble. Have not tried eggs after a work out but do eat protein, drink water, also have tried chololate milk (just 1/2 cup at 70 calories)helps some and so on. Dang if I can figure this out.
I have lowered/ shortened my upper body workout by 1/3. I feel nauseated, and my upper torso aches.

@Nrdsb4, this is my D. She came home from her freshman year nearly 20 lbs overweight (and she’s an athlete.) I knew something was amiss. We looked into family history and found out some aunts had this problem. She has been able to control her weight by cutting down on carbs and sugary foods. She recently showed me picture of her last summer to this summer. The change was surprising.
I’m getting some exercise this week. My brother is going on vacation and I’m watching his poodle. My husband and I will do the dog walk this week when we can.
I think I’m getting a dog when I retire. I think it’s the best middle age weight gain preventive. I’ve already walked this morning. The dog is sleeping lazily outside and my husband suggested we should go for a walk again in the evening so the dog can get some exercise. He is too young to be sedentary. The dog I mean. Maybe I loose 5 lbs after this week.
DrGoogle, our dog sits by the door the same time everyday to “remind” me that its time for a walk. You’ll love having a dog that walks you!
Well I am home and happy to report that I did not gain any weight on my trip. I weigh exactly (to the ounce)the same as when I left. This is actually a first. My walking every day, hiking, yoga and (mostly) good food choices paid off!
I love this dog, even just after two days and he is already too friendly to us. I’ve decided to get up and walk him everyday this week even when I have to be prepare for work. But just a short walk, not a long walk. It’s sad t leave him at home. I’m sure he misses his owner which is my brother’s youngest child. I think he misses the youthful energy. He wants somebody to run with him. He may have the middle age weight gain after this week. I’m predicting 5lbs, while I might lose 5 pounds so it’s a wash.
When I am extremely busy at work, and need to work late hours, I find it almost impossible to do if I do not have candy nearby…something I can keep eating, like Smarties or M&Ms or Junior Mints. I don’t think it’s the sugar high I crave…it’s more the idea of giving myself a treat in the midst of a mountain of work, and the longer I work, the more the treat continues.
Yeah, that’s happened before…^^^^while carrot sticks don’t seem to take the place, I could be happy with cucumber slices and hummus after every 10 minutes of work!!!
I have read that a few almonds or walnuts will satisfy that need…I’m not so sure, but because they have a lot of the good fat they make you feel full.
Kajon, great idea, but I’m allergic to nuts.
We dropped our daughter off at school last week so I am making good on my promise to myself to get back to the gym. Last night was the first time and it wasn’t awful. A friend of mine was there and was trying to convince me to take some of the exercise classes with her. I may do it for the companionship. I need to find a life for myself again now that both kids are out of the house. There’s only so long I can look at my husband. I can’t work all day and stay in the house all night, not happening. I had been walking but that isn’t enough any more.
Woo Hoo for missypie!!! Way to go! I went to my first Zumba class on Tuesday and another this morning. My calves are killing me! Sheesh… This surprises me since I walk and hike a lot! It is not a pretty sight but I am definitely moving (usually in the wrong direction) and sweating! This coordination stuff is really hard for me !
I think Zumba would be much easier if the instructor would stand with her back to the class. My brain just doesn’t operate in the opposite direction.
Today I was on a treadmill and a 20 something man who was very overweight got on the one next to me. I thought to myself “good for you” Over a 10 minute period he continued stand off to the side to receive and send texts, look at links and then hop back on the moving track. Eventually he got off the machine, turned to me and told me that he met his goal of 10 minutes. I honestly don’t think he was in motion for more than a total of 2 minutes. I kept my mouth shut…
