I caught my 54 y/o boyfriend of 4 years vaping. He says he has been doing this for a “few weeks”.
I am blown away!!! He acts like it is no big deal but he certainly hid it from me. He has never smoked and denies any history of drugs. .
I have explained the health concerns with vaping. I can not wrap my head around why a 54 y/o non smoker would start vaping???

Can you clarify what he is vaping?
From what I understand there are primarily two types. One is for nicotine and the other is for THC.
If it is for nicotine, I honestly couldn’t say why he would pick up this habit.
I don’t know what he is vaping. He tells me it is nothing addicting…very vague answer.

I know it has nothing to do with his health. I am a nurse practitioner and know thing about his health and his extending families’ health. He thinks I am their private dr.
Rofl, love the private doctor quote. But seriously there is absolutely no reason to pick up nicotine vaping for no reason. At his age I doubt he is vaping to show all the intricate vapor tricks he can do. I also don’t believe he is doing it due to peer pressure.
People keeps secrets. Since there really is no reason for him to pick up nicotine vaping, the suspicion would be for THC. if it is THC, you should be able to smell marijuana. Depending on the vaping device, he is either filling with liquid or is using premade packets (this is where the liquid and atomizer are in one unit). If he is using liquid, just go take a look at the bottle , nicotine as well as THC should both be labeled. If he is using a packet, you will need to find the packaging to see the labels.
He tried it, he likes it, he’s a grown man and he knows you don’t approve. That’s why he’s doing it in secret. He doesn’t need your permission and doesn’t need to be judged by you. He probably wants you to either join in or butt out. At a minimum, lighten up and let the man enjoy his vape.

Can’t you “vape” non nicotine or marijuana? I thought kids just vaped flavors? So it is just flavored steam?
In theory, you can vape pretty much anything. Mostly, it’s weed or flavored nicotine but yes, there are other options.
Honestly, I’d be extremely disturbed if my partner was hiding something like that from me. I’d be way more disappointed in the hiding than whatever he was doing that I don’t approve of.
I personally just do not understand the appeal of putting anything foreign (more than we already get from the polluted air) into your lungs. If you’re using it for something like weed, there are way better alternatives than ingesting it into your lungs. Yuck
He threw it in the trash and said he is done. He said it was not THC, he also said THC is illegal (is it? we are in Texas).
I kept pressing him and he finally said it is nicotine… Remember this is a 54 y/o non smoker…What the heck is going on??? Yes, the hiding is really unsettling to me.

Ok so it was just nicotine. THC is illegal in some states but it has been approved for medicinal use as well as recreational in several states. Yes I believe THC(marijuana) is illegal for both medicinal and recreational use in Texas.
So it was just something he tried. It really isn’t a big deal. Vaping is not illegal nor are the negative effects clear cut like tobacco.
My opinion, stop nannying him. Since it isn’t a health issue, he was just doing it for recreation.

Just gonna throw out that smoking nicotine is certainly a health issue.
But I digress. It is extremely rare for anyone beyond around their early 20s to begin smoking nicotine. That’s my worry with vaping. It’s marketed to “look cool” and it’s way more appealing (taste-wise) than cigarettes, especially for new smokers. I think it will lure more non-smokers in thinking that it’s not that harmful.
But again, I digress.
I agree with you @romanigypsyeyes, boy I sat my 8th grader down and had a long discussion about vaping and risky behavior today!
I am planning on growing old with bf, so anything he is introducing to his life that effects his health also effects me.
And he was hiding it because he rightly so knew I would flip my lid.
I would be especially concerned if your child wanted to copy BF and start vapor no as well. Your child is the age the vaping folks are especially targeting to get lifelong clients.

I’m calling BS on him. No way is he a lifetime non-smoker. You do not pick up a taste for nicotine in your 50s. He may just have been deceitful about it in the beginning then never wanted to fess up.

Smoking would be hard to hide from someone you are intimate with–sure you would notice. Does vaping not have the same effects as far as odor?
