Middlesex Q&A / Discussion

@Atria thanks so much!

How do the faculty and student community feel about the change of school head situation?

I’m also very interested in faculty and family perceptions on the change in leadership. It wasn’t addressed directly at our revisit - whereas another school we are considering went into detail about their transition and the Board of Trustees’ long term commitments/plans. My initial instinct was that hiring someone from a school in China seemed like an unusual choice. There’s not a strong social justice component to educating the super wealthy in China in an environment without academic freedom. Or maybe I’m missing something here.
I am most interested in MX’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and financial aid. Almost nothing was said about this on any of our visits. This really surprised me. Nobody touched on the theme of the relationship between diversity and excellence.

@souschef6tharr The new head of school worked at Hotchkiss and Loomis before his latest stint in China.

@souschef6tharr
@CaliMex is right, the new head of school has much more experience than solely in China.

As for the school, most of us are sad to see KG go, she has been a pillar of strength for nearly 15 years, but I think the vast majority of students are beyond excited to meet the new head and to be one of the first classes under his leadership. The teacher’s reactions have been overwhelmingly positive (from what I have gleaned from our conversations) and all were rather impressed by the extensive and thorough search process.

As for MX commitment to diversity, inclusion and financial aid. I am actually rather surprised. I must say that I sort of lack perspective on FA other than the fact that it includes many of my friends. But the diversity and inclusion aspect is something MX has, and definitely for the past two years that I have experienced, specifically considered and targeted. Through speakers and programs and initiatives MX is rather deliberate in forcing students to think about not only questions that are meant to make you uncomfortable but instigate conversations about our privilege. Just recently we had Cornell West come and speak as well as the Glasgow group come in and work individually with our respective grades. There are further comments I can add but would prefer not to expand on them on a public forum so if you are interested then feel free to PM me.

Good to see you back here, @Atria. :slight_smile:

Hey Guys,

I haven’t been active for a while (MX is keeping me busy) but if anyone has any questions, even really silly ones, feel free to ask. I am a current senior at MX and pretty involved in everything so ask away :slight_smile:

As always for these types of threads, anyone is free to contribute and answer questions :wink:

At one of their virtual QnA sessions, the three students speaking seemed a lot more athletic and like jocks than I expected. Would you say that MX is more athletics driven than, academics, arts, etc?

How would you describe MXs culture and community? I know there are a lot of traditions and it’s a very small student body but just from the website it almost gives me the vibes of a much larger, college-y school.

How well have they responded to COVID 19? How efficient is their hybrid (?) model of learning?
