One day my daughter asked me, “My friends laughed when I told them I applied for Middlesex. Why do they use such a strange school name?”

What is the best way to explain the people in the south about this name?

One day my daughter asked me, “My friends laughed when I told them I applied for Middlesex. Why do they use such a strange school name?”

What is the best way to explain the people in the south about this name?

It’s probably brought to our shores by the colonial British Empire. :D

Tell them it’s for people who don’t like high or low sex.

Or replace the final “e” with an “o”, as an homage to that one Weezer song off the latest album.

My child used to giggle every time Middlesex was mentioned too, but the reason for not applying to it was not because of its name. There is no explanation except a mumble of “grow up…” :)

its a name of a book too, its pretty good

Much as I hate to admit it, Pulsar is at least partially right. Middlesex School is located in Middlesex County, MA. Middlesex County was named for Middlesex, England. Southern England was occupied by saxon tribes and divided into Wessex (West Saxons), Sussex (South Saxons), Essex (East Saxons) and Middlesex (the central Saxons).

Thanks, Sue, that’s where the name came from. I haven’t encountered anyone who’s been so… well frankly immature about the name as some of the people on this board in quite a while.

I don`t get why people bring it up. When I first heard the name I never thought anything of it. Now here is a question for you, if Exeter were spelled Sexeter, would the name take anything away from the school? :D

Names do matter, otherwise you wouldn’t have called yourself maddog, would you? :D

It matters if you feel different about the name being happydog, sexydog or maddog. Maybe my internal locus is so high that I`m fine with names.

OMG, if some of you need to be so coy about this, then perhaps you should discuss whether there might really be a middle sex?

I don’t understand why people make a big deal about the name Middlesex. It’s named after a county. And no one is making Choate jokes? I can definitely understand the joke there. (Get it? Because Choate sounds like… nvm, I don’t really like this kind of humor anyway.)
