Midwest Schools with Good Disability Services for Students on the Spectrum (ASD)?

Hi-

We live in MN and my son is autistic. He is graduating in 2017 with a 26 ACT and a 2.5 GPA. We are looking at public schools in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and a few in Canada and Illinois that have tuition reciprocity. He may end up attending community college if he doesn’t get into one of the state schools, but I would love to hear from other parents who’ve kids with learning disabilities who’ve attended public colleges and universities in the Midwest. Have you had any good experiences with the Office of Disability at your son or daughter’s school?

Thanks!

Ripon College in Ripon Wisconsin. Be sure to visit, and meet TRIO staff in Academic Services.

Good point Higgins2013. Wherever you look, inquire about TRiO or other similar services-this will tell you a lot about the college or university.

I’m interested in this too! I have a son just starting high school and he, too, is on the spectrum (high functioning). The ones I’ve heard great things about are University of Wisconsin (Whitewater), and in Illinois: Loras College and Elmhurst College.

I have no experience with the Midwest state schools but you may want to look at this book. https://www.amazon.com/Programs-Disabilities-Attention-Hyperactivity-Admissions/dp/0307945073

My friend’s son went to Hope College and had a very positive experience. I know it is not a public school, but my friend’s son graduated and felt very supported while attending Hope.

We also know a family with a child on the spectrum, who graduated from Hope College in Michigan and seems to have had a good experience. If that is too far to consider, there may be smaller schools in Wisconsin which could offer similar environments. I believe there is a separate Learning difference board here, may have more focused recommendations.
