Miley Cyrus at the VMAs

^^^^Speaking only for myself, my smiles at the thought of Betty White have nothing to do with any images of her twerking. ;)

07DAD: really enjoying your posts in this thread

Im confused, 07 dad.
I always had the impression that both Jagger & Simmons were both trying to be overtly sexual with their tongue gyrations.
Why do you think differently?

^^^^^I think you’d have to be pretty naive to think that any of the performers doing the tongue thing to that extent are doing anything else but being “overtly sexual.” And I don’t think 07Dad is naive.

I think trying to justify your attraction to someone forty years younger than you by claiming anyone who is repulsed by that is " jealous", is creepy & immature.

The Oxford Dictionary is adding “twerk” in its quarterly update. Spell check needs to catch up.

Personally, I always found the giant tongue thing distasteful. (Particularly Gene Simmons, who is one of the grossest people ever.) But to answer your question, as Nrdsb4 said, there was never any doubt that it was intended as overtly sexual, then or now.

Since you, and possibly Mini, seem hot to brand us a bunch of hypocritical old jealous prudes engaging in slut shaming, I’d love to know what you think about her dancing with black women with conspicuously generous bottoms dressed in animal costumes, and slapping one of them on the ass.

I’m just glad that there hasn’t been a VH1 rockumentary on the kitchen sink. Because then he would have to throw that one in as well.

I keep flashing on the scene in Spinal Tap where the band can’t understand the difference between sexy and sexist.

<a href=“tw_default - Sign In”>www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/237538/This-Is-Spinal-Tap-Movie-Clip-Smell-The-Glove.html

Nah consolation, I think the guys are just having a bit of fun.

There hasn’t been anyone on this thread yet who admitted to thinking her performance was appealing and sexy. Anyone, anyone?

Gene Simmons was named “the Demon” as part of KISS. His the Demon costume including tongue is available in kids sizes (and sells). Demons and devils have been depicted with prominent tongues. Heck there is a TV commercial with the KISS crew and a mini-KISS crew selling DR.PEPPER. Sex? Eyes of the beholder.

I remember that the Rolling Stones were considered a “rough” band not a sexy band. They were spit on in San Antonio in the 1960s. Once again, sexy? Eye of the beholder. Remember the frozen candy bars? Sick perhaps, not sexy.

I have no idea why anyone would be jealous of MC. I sure don’t. And, I sure do not think MC’s performance was (or was intended to be) sexy.

I’ve been to Rio for Carnival and to Mardi Gras in the early 1970s and attended numerous midnight shows ofRocky Horror. Theatrics. As I said in prior posts, I think MC was shooting the [rubber] finger at her before and did what she did for controversy.

I’m not wagging my finger.

Does anybody believe that brittney spears enjoys her father having custody of her at this age? Does it look like Lindsay Lohan is enjoying the ride? Does anyone believe going to rehab at 9 years old like drew Barrymore did is great? Or maybe Robert Downey Jr. Thought the whole alley way drug deal was great fun.

River Phoenix anyone?

poetgrl–

I agree that what I see makes me think crash and burn for MC. That is why I said that I have my fingers crossed for Emma Watson.

I’m hoping school will give her a chance. This does seem to mitigate things. It’s still a risk. Imho

We remember differently. Mick Jagger? Come on. Maybe in Texas.

Well, of COURSE she did it for controversy. That is without question. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a pathetic attempt to be edgy and sexy.

For the record, I thought that J Lo was displaying her personal problems at least as much as her body when she wore those ludicrously revealing dresses to similar events. Come to think of it, remember Bjork’s swan outfit and the egg? THAT was pure and unadulterated theatrics. Bjork was not displaying her private parts or reenacting Leda and the Swan, aka rape, or masturbating with the egg.

I think mitigate is about all one can hope for. I know that her dad explained to her the amount of money she was making and she then enrolled (while still making the Harry Potter stuff) in some accounting/finance courses. But living 24/7 in only an adult world of deadlines, budgets, getting it “right” in a certain number of takes, concern for ratings etc. seems to wound most of these kids.

You mention Drew and Robert Downey, Jr. They are such a few who can survive that it almost warrants looking at them as fierce and fortunate aberrations to the crash, burn, death ritual.

My son did local children’s theater at the Dallas Theater Center. The director had been made aware of a talent search and suggested that our son might try out for Malcolm in the Middle. NO WAY. IMHO this road at a young age is a form of child abuse.

I saw the headline on huffpost and watched the clip, then read Jezebel and all the links.

Although I am oldish, I wasn’t old enough to see the Stones in concert till the 70s. They were shocking. And very sexy. Especially Mick’s androgyny. I was shocked. I was young. It was pretty easy to make me blush.

Gaga does androgyny. I thought Miley was just following her example with the foam finger. Until I read all the commentary, I thought it was a play on gender. My other thought was “looks like a stepped-up high school cheerleader routine” I wasn’t shocked. Not much shocks me these days. I can’t remember how many decades it has been since I blushed.

I don’t know if the intent was to be sexy. I don’t find Miley very sexy. I watched some clips of early Mick. Not so sexy to me these days. Mick today - pretty sexy still. I am not sure I can find anyone the age of my own kids sexy. I think I feel like the mother of anyone under 30.

I agree with you all about kids in the public eye. Like poetgrl, I refused to let mine participate. Still public footage of them was used twice, that I am aware of, on tv. One clip was featured in a commercial for a local establishment for some years.

I completely agree. It can be a form of child neglect and abuse. Most child stars who survive it don’t have relationships with their parents as adults. This tells me a lot about this.

Also just to be clear, I’m not “shocked” by Miley, just saddened for her. People like Madonna and gaga were not child stars.

From the story about Robin Thicke’s mother:

For some reason, that cracks me up. The first HS games of the season around here are on Friday night. I wonder if any high schools will thereafter ban foam fingers.

I would not suggest “riding” the foam finger at the game. I doubt the administration would see the humor.

missypie–
have you seen the Mavericks’ Dancers at a game. Isn’t part of the routine a form of twerking?

258 agree

It is different to be a child star. I have no way to know whether she is in charge of her life now or someone is controlling her to her detriment. I gather there are videos that suggest she isn’t making the best choices. She is very young. However, this particular routine really doesn’t seem that different than if she was a high school or college cheerleader. I would be happy to eliminate the “sexy” and “provocative” cheerleader routines but they seem to be seen as most as part of all American culture?
