Miley Cyrus at the VMAs

Nrdsb4 - +1 for Fred Stobaugh. The 9 minute clip at the end of the article is a real tear-jerker. People like this are a dying breed.

I love Dave, but my H can’t stand him.
At least he likes Eddie.
Justin Townes Earle et all do a regular Townes Van Zandt tribute at the local honky tonk every year.

Thanks for posting that video. That led me to Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs. I like them.

Love Star. She has come such a long way from when we first saw her, she hardly could look at the audience. Her posts on twitter remind me of Jennfer Lawrence but darker.
She also has a brand new record!
Its called Go to Hell.
Not sure if that is dedicated to Kasey Anderson.:stuck_out_tongue:

She also did a great job on Instant Karma, with Alan White on drums.
(& my guitar instructor Jeff Rouse on bass)

You are really equating what Emma Watson does, playing a role in a Sofia Coppola movie to what Miley Cyrus does? Wow.

I personally see a huge difference and think that Emma has more class in her little toe than poor MC will ever have.

I am not really familar with Miley and I didnt watch the VMA awards, so I cant judge if she is going off the rails or if she was merely interested in making a fuss. I suspect the latter.

By contrast I think Emma Watson seems pretty grounded.
Jennifer Lawrence is another young actor who seems to have a healthy perspective & a great sense of humor!
I liked her reply for instance after comments that she was " chubby" on screen. She said she would rather be chubby on screen and healthy in person, than skeletal in real life.( paraphrasing)

Smart girl.

Yes, we know, mini, that you are Simply Too Cool to know anything about pop culture.

(I wouldn’t be able to pick MC out of a crowd, myself, and I happened not to have watched the VMA’s, and I’m not all that “offended” nor do I feign surprise that a young and attractive and shapely female singer used sexuality in her act, because that’s hardly breaking news. But I don’t have to pretend that I’m Too Cool for pop culture, either.)

PG, there is another aspect to the performance which you might have considered offensive had you seen it and been thinking about it.

It’s about the money honey

[Let Me Explain Why Miley Cyrus? VMA Performance Was Our Top Story This Morning | The Onion - America’s Finest News Source](Let Me Explain Why Miley Cyrus’ VMA Performance Was Our Top Story This Morning)

For a performer and all the people who make money off of the performance, sure, it can in very large part be about the money. For the people who have myriad reactions, perhaps those are about something besides the money.

What I meant was that I didn’t watch the VMA’s live. I watched it on video to see what the fuss was about. I thought it was gross and vulgar, but I can’t say I was personally offended. It’s hardly new news that female pop stars push the envelope of good taste for attention. That was the case 30 years ago with Madonna and Like a Virgin, it’s the case with Lady Gaga, and now Miley Cyrus. Nothing new under the sun.

I found race related aspects of the performance disturbing. See pages 11 and 12 of this thread.

I just don’t get the race thing here. Dancers are dancers, yes?

I only saw video one time and didn’t even notice what race anybody was.

I would more point to child porn with the bears, her little girl bear outfit and the older guy before I would think race?

Rape. Slavery. History.

Twerking was started in the ghetto… there was a black woman dancing with Miley onstage… can kinda see the correlation altho I am sure Miley didnt intend it that way , she probably thought she was joining their club.

The money part? I was just addressing why the story was everywhere, not why SHE did it.
altho I am betting it was for attention, new album release, and money.

Big Freedia sez Miley needs practice.
[Miley Cyrus Twerking “Offensive To Black Women,” Says Big Freedia | NewNowNextNewNowNext](http://www.newnownext.com/big-freedia-miley-cyrus-twerking-offensive-to-black-women/08/2013/)

So Miley’s offense is that she is coopting black culture?

Don’t tell her that–she’ll think she’s Elvis.

IMO, Cyrus’ offense was the fact that not a single iota of talent was displayed in her VMA performance – just a continuous barrage of awkward, vulgar motions. It was the antithesis of a sexy hot act. It was a tacky uncouth mess. I wonder if child actors like Dakota Fanning, Hayden Panettiere, Hilary Duff and Miranda Cosgrove would be willing to follow the path of crude stage acts for the sake of a billion fiat money and twitter buzz?

I think the race thing is a bunch of bull, trumped up for more traction. Darius Rucker had better stop coopting white country music culture.

Darius Rucker is a huge talent and should co-opt all the musical culture he can find.
He will surely improve it :).
