I’ve been living in Virginia for the last 5 years, but my parents’ residency is in Washington state. What do I need to do on the application to make sure I am looked at as an in state applicant?

I would say contact the admissions office of the college you are applying to. Because you’ve lived in VA for 5 years (I’m assuming you live in a house, and not a cardboard box ) you should be considered a resident there, even if your parents own a home in Washington state.

I don’t think that is correct. Because your parents continue to consider themselves WA residents, and are not paying VA taxes, you are considered out of state. Being WA residents, they presumably have out of state tags, are not paying personal property taxes on their cars, do not vote in VA, they are not VA residents and you get no breaks.

If you are presently a junior, then I think you can qualify for the next admission cycle if a parent switches residency to VA immediately and files a 2009 VA income tax return, pays property taxes, registers to vote in VA, gets a VA drivers license, etc.

Sorry if I was wrong. I thought that as the fact that you have lived there for more than one year, you could be considered a live-in resident (I have read that one other posts here).

Again, I think you should contact the admissions office. That way, you know what THEY want, and not what WE can only assume at.

Pages 3 and 4 of the supplement are the Application for In State Privileges. Fill that out. Submit the documentation required. The Office of Virginia Status will determine if you are a resident if you aren’t sure of your status.
