Minerva Institute of Research and Scholarship Thoughts

AKA Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute (as far as I know, not actually completely part of the KGI, nor physically located at KGI).

Looks like this is a new school, but the 5 professors/deans have tons of experience. Every year, you live in a different location on the globe, participating in seminars through their patented online service. Admission is supposedly competitive, while tuition is low due to lack of clubs, sports, and high maintenance campuses.

Curriculum is more rigid than the LACs and higher tier universities I’ve been looking at, but according to them, a double major is still possible.

Check it out?

They are visiting my school later this year, so I will be able to report back after the visit.

bump

It’s something I’d be very, very cautious about. It’s a new venture, which is always risky; it’s for-profit, which is generally regarded with some disdain in both the academic community and the job world. Tuition might be low, but you’ve got housing costs, travel costs including international flights, and cost of living generally may be higher than you’re expecting.

There’s a thread here discussing it: <a href=“Minerva Project Overthrows Harvard? - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1539592-minerva-project-overthrows-harvard-p1.html</a></p>

I’d add to those concerns the visa issue: you’d need to get a new visa from a different country each semester. What happens if you’re denied one?

What library and lab facilities are there?

@Conformist1688 Yeah, those are basically what I’m also concerned about. Even comparing overall costs, Minerva is pretty low-cost, so I’m pretty much ignoring that for-profit part.

I’m not a citizen of a large, powerful, and potentially dangerous country (such as the U.S, China, or Russia), so I’m not very worried about the visa issue.

However, you do bring up a lot of important issues.
