I just checked my grades online and I found that I have a C in AP calculus (just put a new test in-which I bombed). The quarter ends this week, meaning I doubt I’ll have time to raise the grade. First quarter I got a B in that class.

I am positive that my cumulative this year (including the C) is higher than any previous years’. I already got my LL in December. Should I email my (hopefully) future coach and tell him this? Or will it seem annoying?

I just don’t want PU to get my midterm report and then be like “we told her not to slack off!!! REJECT!!!”

Gosh everything was going great until yesterday. Math sucks.

I don’t think this will be a dealbreaker, haha. How are your semester grades calculated? Will you be able to bring the semester grade up to a B?

In any case, I wouldn’t stress over this. Just do your best and you will be fine. I don’t think you need to email the coach. If there is an issue, he will be in contact with you. But really, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

I wouldn’t do anything. You have a LL, you have a less than steller grade in an AP math class – don’t make excuses to the coaches or the school. Relax, take a deep breath, study for the next one.

What you heard on an earlier post was hearsay along with a “promised” LL – which doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.

If a poster steps up an says, “yes, my S/D had his/her LL withdrawn because of one less than steller grade,” then I would rethink my advice to relax.

I agree with Stemit and Varska, a C for the quarter is not a big deal, particularly since you have a B for the semester. Keep up the good work for the rest of the year and then enjoy the fruits of your labor in the fall!

hey-pal, don’t lose any sleep over this. Your semester average is a B in a class many kids never attempt in high school. Even HYP will understand: it sounds like you’re a non-math person taking the most rigorous courses you can, and doing just fine. Hang in there. You’ll be sending the mid-year transcript soon, and I doubt this will raise any eyebrows with admissions. If your coach is worried about your semester grades, he will give you a call. I would keep it brief: C for the quarter but B for the semester. Be sure not to lay blame on the teacher or your busy schedule.

there’s no harm in emailing the coach and admissions with an explanation, they are going to see the grade very soon anyway, at Princeton there is one person in admissions tracking the senior year grades of all LL athletes, and if they see a C in calc they’ll run it past dean Rapelye. Being proactive in telling her you made a mistake or mis-managed your time or whatever the real reason is you got a C could be very helpful to you. At the very least you will most likely get a letter from her asking you to explain why the C. At worst Princeton requires a couple athletes each year to take a “gap” year and retake the class or classes they got low grades in, at their local jc. Princeton knows you can get an A in AB AP Calc, their concern is going to be why you’re slacking off after being given such a privileged opportunity as a LL admissions.

I do know what I’m talking about so don’t screw around with your senior year grades if you’re matriculating to HYPorS. They can come down on you.

think of it this way, how many regular admits (non athletes) get C’s in any high school course and are also members of your incoming freshman class to Princeton? answer: none of them.

i agree with the above posts in that everything will be OK, so don’t let my advice freak you out, BUT don’t take this lightly, be respectful of Princeton’s academic standards and don’t make the mistake of thinking the LL will protect you if you continue to get C’s.

and the kid I referred to must have gotten a D or F because he’s considered one of the best junior athlete in the country in his sport and he’s a double legacy to Brown. He’ll go to Cal now.

fyi: coaches will not know about your grades. your high school will only communicate with admissions, and admissions at Princeton will communicate with you directly and cc your coach.

and river is right, it’s not a big deal if your semester grade is a B. But I interpreted your post as saying your 2nd quarter/semester grade will be a C.

if it’s a B then yes, relax:) but if your semester grade is a C I’d proactively let the dean know you made a mistake.

riverrunner: spot on. I know there’s no excuse, but I’m really not a math person. Regardless of how many practice problems I always seem to screw something up on tests. However, my math grades have always been noticeably lower than my other grades (neither bad), and I still got a LL.

My cumulative GPA is higher this year than before (more APs and near straight As), so it doesn’t look like I’m slacking. I think I will be OK. Unless the coach contacts me about it I’m not going to bring it up.

Heypal, First check with the registrar at your school. Your high school will submit a transcript to princeton at the end of the first semester. It is possible that this transcript will only include your semester grade (and not each individual quarter). If the transcript includes only a semester grade, your worries are - hopefully - moot!

I agree with previous posters that a C quarter grade that translates to a B semester grade is not a concern for you. A C semester grade at HYP Penn is however.

I agree 100% not to bring it up. You may end up creating an issue/problem where there is no issue/problem. Why draw attention to the mildly negative? IF IF IF PU feels it’s a problem, they will contact you and THEN you can explain away.

Secondly, do they even see quarter grades on your transcript? For each class my HS transcript ONLY shows a semester grade, which is made up of 40% 1st quarter grade, 40% second quarter and 20% midterm exam. Only the semester grade matters, in my – and my HS’s – opinion.

I genuinely believe you are 100% fine – especially with all those APs and As and a higher GPA!!! Though i “get” why you;re freakin’ … Try to get past that and ENJOY your acceptance. I know you’re not slacking and PU will know it too.

My S’s friend got a “you could be rescinded” letter after her ED acceptance from Midd when her Calc BC grade dropped from a 81 to a 79. I am not kidding. All her other grades were higher or the same. The school reported quarter, not semester grades.
I would let your coach know, and if your teacher is a helpful person, ask if they’ll write a letter saying you aren’t slacking off if needed. I don’t think you would be denied for one C, but some schools are very serious about this issue.
