We just discovered this, it is an ABC (Australian Broadcast corporation) production that Netflix has, and we have fallen in love with it. It is set in 1920’s Melbourne, and features a rather unique woman as the protagonist, she for the times is very liberated, is well off and also has a unique past. What makes it fun is it is very much in the lines of some of the 1970’s detective shows I remember, there is a lot of fun to it, the clash between Miss Fisher and the police detective (which turns into a friendship that has a deeper level to it, that neither party wants to admit) yet they also are not afraid to touch upon real issues, like the role of women, class, the way and they touch a lot upon WWI and its impact on people, which is something you don’t see much…but it does this where it still remains fun to watch.
They did a great job with the casting, the actress who portrays Miss Fisher inhabits the role, not just the way she talks, but her body motion, the way she flirts with characters, and then when she expresses deeper emotions it comes off as real. The other actors they casted are just as supurb, especially the actress who plays her companion, and the two main cops, a detective inspector and his young constable, but everyone so far has been great (we have watched 2 of the 3 seasons). Not to mention that the clothing, buildings and the settings are fun to watch, as are the cars (she drives a Hispano-Suiza), I found it funny when the wheel falls off an Alfa Romeo and they were saying that couldn’t be by accident, whoever wrote that line obviously never owned one lol.
I love Miss Fisher! The clothes and sets are amazing, and the characters so much fun. I have been watching ever since season 1 popped up as recommended for me—now I am awaiting the next season, though nothing has been announced yet for a season 4. :- (
The costumes have been traveling around Australia in an exhibit, and there are rumors of a movie to tie things up.
If you like Essie Davis, here is an article about other things she has been in. I saw her in The Babadook and The Slap and it is indeed hard to believe she is also Miss Fisher; those cheekbones are hard to hide, though!
My DIL turned me onto Miss Fisher last year and, like bookreader, I’m eagerly awaiting season 4. I recommended to an aunt and a cousin and they are big fans as well. Aren’t they taking her to the UK for season 4 or did I just dream that?
I think what I love the best about Miss F, the character, is that you see her as this live for the moment, daredevil, come as it may person, but you also see through the stories the real hurt that is inside her, and why she lives like that, and you see the sadness in her and why. As fun as it is, I found myself caring about the characters, and I really hope that at some point she and the detective inspector get together, I think they really could help each other’s pain:). Apparently this show is doing really well on Netflix, so it is likely to get a 4th season made, it also is one of the more popular shows on the ABC as well.
We ran through the first two seasons on DVD from the public library, and then through as many episodes as Happydad could find for free online - I think we missed only one. I went back and re-read most of the books later.
I also love it. I’ve read some of the books, including most of those the series is based on. The later ones, IMO, aren’t as good–later books, I mean. I am not “into” fashion, but the clothes in this are amazing.
Oh, I love Phryne! I’ve been watching Miss Fisher since it first premiered on PBS. I also love all the other characters that make for a wonderful ensemble show.
I must say that I did try reading Kerry Greenwood’s books, and I think the tv version is much more enjoyable.
