Missing W2

My daughter did not get her W2 form from her employer. Because she was moving,Moshe asked that it be sent electronically. It was not.

She has contacted them but has not even gotten a return email or call.

Any suggestions? She lives far away now!

Well, technically, the deadline isn’t until tomorrow.

I would just keep trying to contact them. One time, my kid got one several months late. (nice but disorganized employer)

Regardless, she’s required to file taxes. Here’s advice from the IRS:
https://www.irs.gov/uac/IRS-Can-Help-if-W2s-Are-Missing

She may receive it next week or later since today is January 31 and employers have until today to mail them. Would it have been sent to her address and then forwarded? Is the company large enough to have an HR dept? Call them directly and ask the status. Did she earn enough to require a W2? (Over $600).

If she has her last pay stub, all the information she needs should be on it. With electronic filing, she would not need to submit a paper copy and would only keep it for her records.

If it was sent and is now “lost”, she can request a duplicate. I would probably give them another week.

Well, yeah, she’s supposed to get it by the end of January. But, there’s the law, and there’s real life. She should just keep nudging and she’ll get it eventually.

Yes…she earned enough to require a W2. Yes the company is large enough to have HR…which is who she contacted.

She had direct deposit…so hopefully she has her last pay stub receipt in email.

And her last address…was our house…and no it hasn’t come here.

Does she have option to download from online? Companies with payroll handled by ADP usually have that option.

Turbotax also can retrieve W2 online and fill in answers all the questions if your kid can supply SSN, employer ID, and password. It’s more accurate than typing in by hand.

Thumper, she should check her email. Mr. B’s co uses ADP, and his W2 was just posted in his ADP portal today. I assume the paper copy will follow in the mail next week.

She has asked for the password, and employer ID number.

She requested it be sent to her electronically…and it wasn’t. Maybe it will arrive here tomorrow.

Do they forward w2 forms at USPS? If so…it might be in its way to her…having been forwarded if it was actually mailed.

USPS forwarding is a hit and miss.

USPS forwarding is hit or miss, if the envelope says return service requested, then it goes back to the sender. And USPS is slow on forwarding

Right. I’m hoping it got forwarded and she will get it this week.

I haven’t received my mailed copy yet, although according to my employer it was mailed two weeks ago. Fortunately I have access to it via our HR portal. I’m not sure if the blizzard impacted the mail?

Our automated payroll system does not allow electronic access to former employees, so I imagine your D won’t be able to download if she is no longer employed. We have this issue with our grads who worked on campus - I have to try to get their updated addresses from them in December so HR can send the W2 to the right address.

I am stuck doing 1098-T’s, and our vendor who creates the forms is behind. They filed a 30-day extension with the IRS, and our forms will be sent out late. I don’t know if companies can do the same thing with W2s?

Every year , we get a handful of them returned to us. Today is the deadline …we got ours in the mail last Monday. Sometimes people say they never got them so we get copies from our accountant. We have never emailed them…didn’t know that was an option

Documents containing SSN’s should never be emailed. It is not a secure method.

H works for a community college and never receives his by the 31st; it usually shows up a week late.

She is no longer an employee. But she does have a mailing address. She will follow up this week.

Worse comes to worse…we file her taxes with the info she has…and amend if needed.

I never do my return until after 2/15. Too many 1099/w-2’s etc come late. Forget about waiting for a k-1

W2s showed up today for H, D1, D2. Surprise, surprise! Still waiting for a few 1099s. Hope your daughter’s shows up this week.

FWIW, I never schedule the appt with the accountant in February; too many things show up during the month.

DD doesn’t need an accountant. She files a very simple tax return, although this year she will have medical expenses that far exceed the minimum for a deduction based on her income. But even if she does a 1040 long form…she doesn’t have much to put on it!

She has contacted HR, and is hoping to get this resolved this week.
