Mississippi State U Lockdown

My friend’s daughter just recently started as a freshman at Mississippi State, and they were horrified today to have the campus on lockdown in search of a suspected shooter. The person wound up being another freshman – someone enrolled in computer engineering – who was threatening to kill himself and others. Scary start to college! What can be said about the mental state of kids graduating from high school these days? How can we help them?

Oh wow, that is scary! I’m glad to hear he’s been taken into custody. Not a fun way to start off college… :frowning:

My kids had a lock down their first day of a new high school. Well, really a lock out as first they put them in the gym and the onto the football field where it was over a 100 degrees. Marines, sheriff officers, news helicopters, marine helicopters, attack dogs. Nothing like picking your kids up the first day from a scene in Apocalypse Now.

mommyrocks - I’m not trying to make light of the issue, but ever since the VT shootings, colleges have gotten some good plans in place. One thing a lot schools have done is keycard access to the dorms, making them a safe refuge.

twoinanddone - the marines? jeez, who were they looking for?

It’s worth noting that 20 years ago, or even. 10 years ago, a situation like what happened at MS State would probably not have prompted a campus wide lockdown and many students would never have been aware of it. Anything that could possibly be a threat is taken far more seriously now.

A marine! The high school was next to Camp Pendelton, and they found some weird writings in the bunk of a marine they couldn’t locate. There were students at this school who lived on the base. The high school is a series of buildings built at the base of a cliff, with one or two building up on the cliff. As we drove up, you could see snipers up along the ridge. Helicopter, police dogs, much military. Scary. It is a large high school, 3500, so they brought in a lot of manpower to handle the situation.

^^scary, yes, but if I had to order up a security detail, the men and women at Pendleton would be at the top of the list!

Camp Pendleton. That makes sense. I live in the area of Legune. If one of there own was a problem, they will come looking.
