MIT FAQ for application year 2013-2014

Yes, you can update (or not update) any way you wish.

Thank you so much molliebatmit!
By the way, I have another question. On the application tracking page, it seems like MIT has not received my school reports and transcripts since the box hasn’t been ticked off. However, when I try clicking on the link, I am directed to a page which says that my school reports and transcripts have been ‘processed’. So, does this mean that my application is missing the school reports and transcripts?
Many thanks!

Well, here is an awkward question, but one our guidance counselors have been unsuccessful finding the answer to… how does a student who has been accepted to MIT decline the offer of admission? We know it doesn’t happen very often! But sometimes there are extenuating circumstances, etc…

Well, I mean, about 30% of the students who are admitted each year have to decline, so it’s neither awkward nor rare.

There will be a form on MyMIT for you to declare your decision by May 1. You do have to respond yes or no (or to defer admission for one year), and it’s not assumed you’ll be coming.

Thank you Mollie. We had looked, but there is no form there available yet.

Why does this site: <a href=“MIT Admissions”>MIT Admissions; show that decisions for the class of 2018 are available when I know they won’t be until mid-March?

This week I was contacted by an MIT alumni to schedule an interview although my interview appeared waived in MyMIT account, since I am an international student and there are few ECs in my country. Is it normal for this to happen during this time?

@2011mom the webpage shows that for the early action applicants who recieved their decisions December 2013.

I sent the IDOC packet at the beginning of this week (W-2s came late), but the CollegeBoard said it requires 7-8 days for it to be processed. Is this going to violate the Feb. 15 financial aid deadline? FAFSA and CSS have been received.

It will be up in time, no worries. I imagine it will be up around April 1.

It’s not normal, but it’s not bizarre, either. It’s up to your local educational council to decide when they want to stop offering interviews. Fortunately, international students won’t be read and selected until the end of February, so your interview report will arrive in time to contribute to your application.

EDIT: See Mikalye’s reply below for a more informed answer than mine!

The deadline should be a submission/postmark deadline, not a processing deadline. You’ll be fine.

Hello, I’ve already submitted my February Updates and Notes Form, and I just found out that I am receiving an award that I would like to add to my update. How can I do this? Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks! I have another question: I’m waiting to find out if I’ve received a particular award, and it’s supposed to be decided “this week”. Is the Feb. 15th deadline mean 11:59pm Feb 14 or 1159:pm Feb. 15?

Hello, I have a question regarding the February Updates and Notes Form. The form says that “Don’t have any updates? No problem! Many students don’t. Know any good jokes or have a favorite inspirational quotation instead?” So does this mean I can only include one quotation? Thank you very much!

Email is probably best – admissions at mit dot edu.

I think you’re safe to assume it’s the end of the day Feb 15, since that’s how all the other deadlines at MIT are. Either way, it’s the time of the season when the MIT admissions officers will be at work all day tomorrow just as they were at work today. :)

No, I don’t read it that way. Include a couple if they strke your fancy.

That’s not quite true. International interview reports are due before now. Late interviews are very rare, although we may interview into January as international EC’s, with prior arrangement, I cannot recall ever going into February. That being said, sometimes, after the application has been read, but before committee, MIT will ask us specifically to interview a waived student in order to answer a question that came up during the reading. For example, the admissions office might need to know whether the the student’s English is good enough to cope with MIT. When such cases do come up, we are rarely told what question MIT is trying to resolve in the application, merely that they think that the interview can help them reach an appropriate decision in this specific case.

Thank you for your response @Mikalye! Is the fact that MIT had a question about my application usually a bad sign?

Nope. In fact quite the opposite usually. If the application clearly was not good enough, then there would be no reason to ask for a supplemental interview. It is broadly a very positive sign that there is something there that they value and that they want to find out more. Of course with a 3% international admit rate, a positive sign only goes so far, but I would not worry.

Hi, my January SAT scores came in 5 days late and still haven’t been sent to MIT. I did significantly better this round (up by 100 points). I’m very worried the Admissions won’t receive them in time. Should I rush report the scores? Thanks

How is it that you know the scores haven’t been received by MIT?

The SAT Collegeboard website shows which scores have been sent and which are still pending. But it’s all okay now because I contacted Admissions and they told me not to rush report. Instead they kindly added my email with the newest scores to my file.

For financial aid, it says I am missing “Original US Citizenship Documentation.”
However, this was not specified in my IDOC requirements, and I haven’t seen anything telling me what it is.
What is it?
