MIT Interviews

MIT specifically states that intended major doesn’t affect admission chances because statistics show that over 50% of students change their major once in college and around 17% change twice. Let me quote MIT’s Website

**"We’re asking about your preferred field of study because we’re curious about what interests you right now - not because we have any quotas. You won’t declare your major until the end of your freshman year - there’s a lot of time between now and then to explore, discover new things, change your mind.

For this reason, approximately half of our students ultimately major in something entirely different from what they wrote on their application, so we couldn’t use this data to predict anything even if we wanted to. Moral of the story: neither writing “theoretical nuclear intergalactic business physics” nor “underwater basket weaving” will give you an edge in the admissions process, so just be honest!"**

However, it can be helpful at LACs because they often have undermanned science departments, so applying for Science at a LAC will definitely help you.

Yeah that works bud.
Thanks (felt better).
MiT, I was never really so attracted to it. :stuck_out_tongue:

PS whats LAC ?

@Abhi27nav …were you contacted for any interviews, especially Harvard and MIT?

Princeton Interview. I am afraid I do jot know of any interview in mumbai, yet.

LAC= Liberal Arts Colleges

Okay. No. noLACs on me list.

Also ni MiT or have interview for me.
Automatic rejection you know. :P

yeah…I am not applying to any LACs either
But, since you seem to be someone who is totally into sciences and scientific research and all, MIT and Stanford are the sort of colleges that might suit you. Curriculum at LAC is very very broad based. In fact, even ivies do have general requirements/core curriculum requirements that require you to do various humanities, social and natural sciences, languages etc. Such courses really do help develop the student in a wholesome manner.

EDIT: Well, interviews do seem to be selective but don’t lose hope. You have applied to many other amazing colleges, getting into anyone would be a BIG achievement that y can be proud of! And yeah, I didn’t get a Harvard interview…so prepared for the news on 28th :P

Where all have you applied @Conscience13 ?

Well, thise are colleges which require
Super duper act scores as well. :P

So you got an MiT interview ?
Thanks man. Goodluck to you. Goodnews on the 28th , I’d pray.

I have applied to all Ivies except for Brown, Stanford and UChicago. Btw, UChicago results are out on 14th (or our 15th)!!! SOOOO CLOSE!

Yes. I am counting on that ! :stuck_out_tongue:
(so easy to say )

I didn’t apply to MIT…I haven’t done sciences in 11th and 12th and I knew it would b impossible to get in. Even if I did (by some miracle), I probably wouldn’t adjust to the science-y and techy environment :P

What essay prompt did you choose? Weren’t they just crazily awesome! Wonder how they come up with them! I chose the apples and oranges one and had great fun writing it  . Lol, looks like everyone is diverting from the main theme of this thread!

Well, a planned move. Goodluck ! And I ll hope the yankees work their theory of holistic admissions.

LACs have several advantages that NUs don’t have

 • admissions is less stringent for males (because most LACs have more females than males)
 • they’ve more aid for internationals (don’t know the reason for this, just pure observation)
 • they excel in pure sciences and humanities (not for technical or professional degrees), if you’re a pure science major, admissions will be a lot more easier
 • you’ll get a small environment and will have your own academic and career counselor which is not available at most NU (their counselors are always overworked)
 • No T.As , not even in introductory courses (most of the times)
 • If you really want to enjoy college to the fullest and want to participate in everything, a LAC is the place to go
 • due to the small size, professors and people know you
 • easy transition as everyone will reach out to you, not possible at populated NUs
 • laid back but serious atmosphere
 • Division 3 athletics, no need to worry if you don’t participate because you won’t lose your scholarship

I chose the independent one. As in to choose a topic and wrote on “being good in three hours against a sheet of paper”

@Abhi27nav Why do you say that ETH Zurich is verrry expensive? Isn’t there like no/minimal tuition fee just cost of living/board?
Just a clarification, you didn’t actually visit these places, you interacting/conducted research via the internet, right?
Thanks!

@robots156
Living in switzerland in itself very expensive and the boarding itself is pretty expensive.

No buddy. Not rich enough to visit. :stuck_out_tongue:
I am a cyber connected researcher at those places. Besides ETH issecondary. I am primarily connected to Max Planck instt. For Theoretical Physics.
