MIT MITES @2015

@lilmonet1 Did you get the survey email too?

They also have a list of other programs on their website

Are we allowed to give updates to our application, if it involves awards? If so, who should I contact?

I applied to the MITES program and also received the list of other summer programs. For everyone looking at it as an omen of rejection, I think you’re reading too much into it. I had the same initial doubt but I’m pretty sure MIT just sent that list out to a group of emails that have been registered with MIT and etc; the college counselor at my high school also got it and posted it for everyone else to look at.

I do not think so. DD also applied to MIT WIT program and did not get any mailing from them.

^Interesting, does the MIT WIT program require creating a registered account with MIT?

All the other programs I’m applying to are releasing decisions on various dates in April and some in May. I just hope there’s no “three days to decide” thing because I’m gonna need to hear back from MITES first!! lol How’s everybody taking the wait?

same here @poisonivy20 ! One program I’m applying to should actually let me know if I got in around the 20th of this month so I’m ready to hear back from them. Though it’s a residential program, it’s an in-state program for me and it’s only 3 weeks so I want to hear back from other (longer and more far away) programs before I accept theirs.

My daughter applied to and attended e2@mit last year. I received the email about summer programs as well. It is not an indicator if you were accepted to mites or not. I would recommend that you apply to many of the different programs. Mites can only take a limited number of students so this will give you some options.

Woah. Blow up on the panic and maybe angst.

@jaewonm009, @uesmomof2, @seal16, As an alum (of MITES and of MIT), I can tell you that MIT is not in the habit of sharing info with other offices/departments, specially people info. WIT is not run by the OEOP (and by WIT do you mean WTP?? If, so that’s run by EECS I think) so unless the WIT office compiles a similar list and sends it out to the students, your child wouldn’t have gotten this same e-mail from WIT. The excel of programs is a document owned by the OEOP (as far as I know.) The OEOP also goes out of it’s way to make sure that kids hear about other opportunities since the OEOP can’t possibly accept all 1600+ kids that apply. It’s just them trying to be nice, and not trying to reject anyone. The account you’ve created with MIT is solely hosted within the OEOP. Just like when you apply for admissions that account will be solely hosted by admissions.

On the topic of rejection – the application deadline is really late. February 18th for teacher recommendations… with more than 1600 applications, having each application read by multiple eyes (very true to MIT, the admissions office does a similar process), and the OEOP being tiny (the core team for the national programs is 4 people – check the site) I’d be willing to bet that reading the apps and making decisions will extend all the way until the first week of April. It’s a lot to go through, so everyone will sleep much better knowing that there isn’t some decision already made about you – and there probably won’t be one until right when you hear about it. (Also, I think reading isn’t done by those 4 staff so no “oh i talked to this person all the time during the app season” type of pull happens.)

@buckeyeinmd‌ – It’s actually really easy for a teacher to go back and tailor a recommendation for another program or a scholarship or school or job once they’ve written out the first one. My recommenders in HS were the same for the summer programs I applied to Jr year and for college in Sr. year. Total “number” of recs they wrote? Close to 20 and sure the first one took a bit of prodding, but from then on they were happy to do it since they only need to spend 5-10 minutes editing what they already had.

Does anyone know when the decisions will come out this year?

Website says mid April

Guess it’s best to forget about it until it comes

So good/bad news: I got accepted into this summer program but I have to let them know by March 31st and I honestly don’t know what to do. :\ I didn’t think they would need to know so early since the program is in July.

I think I may just accept this one since my chances of getting into MITES are so slim, but I’m gonna think about it for a few days.

@lilmonet1‌ have you emailed them to ask them about an extension until mid-April?

Implying I actually do get into the program, I have no idea how I’m going to pay for transportation. I live in Southern California and plane tickets to Boston cost a lot of money. I also would like spending money for Boston but my parents don’t have that money to give right now. I’m so confused.

@lilmonet1‌ If they dont offer an extension, I would accept and if MITES works out, find some way to cancel or drop out.

I agree with @PoisonIvy20‌, @lilmonet1‌ You need a back up plan but MIT should be top priority over any other programs in the end.

I’ve always used College Confidential to help with IB (International Baccalaureate, similar to AICE if anyone understands that analogy) but totally forgot to check here for MITES and really would’ve taken the essays into a little bit more consideration, knowing that those were the tickets as many alumni state into getting in (showcasing personality aside from a test score).

I know of an exceptional student that went to my school that my French teacher had, and is always comparing me to him. I got his info and starting messaging him and, while he was bright a student, he said he only took SAT and that MITES helped him get into MIT later on and also what got him the Gates Millennium and Questbridge scholarship.

*Funny story: I got some mail about 2 days ago from MIT that was rather thick (so i felt like it was an acceptance and registration tpye of thing). After I got my family really excited over it, I opened it up to find out it was just an advertising booklet about the college
