california mites minority introduction to engineering, entrepreneurship and science mail letter receive accepted to mites what now mit summer program for minorities

heheh, im just putting some tags so that some californians that got accepted (not on CC) will find us :)

Hey guys, random Calculus question for a project I have due tomorrow. If I was calculating volume using the washer method(revolving around the x-axis) and then with the Shell method(revolving around the y-axis this time), I get different volumes, right? Just checking.

@melody: Well I was told they are the same when you use washer and shell to revolve around the same axis, but then you use 1 for the x-axis and 1 for the y-axis, well my teacher never said that and my textbook is pretty quiet on that.

If you’re revolving around different axes, you’ll get a different answer.
:)

Just picture let’s say the graph of ln(x)
If you revolve it around the x-axis you’ll have a smaller volume than if you revolve it around the y-axis.

Oops! Sorry, I thought you meant if you were using the shell and washer method when you revolve the function across the same axis, my bad! Yes, they would be different if you revolved them around a different axis.
:)

Oh, by the way, Krysty, I’m pretty sure we’ll find out sometime before May 20th.

I mean, MIT MITES will probably get the accepted students stuff by the 24th of April (and that’s assuming some mail takes A BIG WHILE), so we should find out by the first or second week of May :)
