^
nope, never heard about it until now.

Gaah! I’m looking at all of your stats and feel ashamed…
Someone look at me and tell me what you think [mind me, I’m just posting everything that I can dish out]:

Indian (born in America though - Seattle too…)
Junior year at high school
PSAT - 750 Math; 650 CR; 620 Writing
GPA: (What do we base GPAs here on? If on As, then yes, I have a 4.0; if out of 100, then it’s 3.9/4.0 unweighted)
In Calculus BC currently (99 average so far) and AP Physics B (average is around a 92/93…)
Science: Biology (Honors), Chemistry (Honors), AP Physics
Technology Classes: IED, Digital Electronics, Computer Numerical Control (100 on midterm!)
All college level
SAT Subject Tests (those that I can remember):
Math I - 710; Math II - 730; Biology - 750; World History - 730; Chemistry - 710
All are surprisingly over 700 but I just get so freaked out that I can never nail them - parents and whatnot - and I might retake the two maths (I took them when I was in 9th grade so maybe I can do better now)
Extras: Working with RPI graduate student on his Masters in programming a software (this should give me a big boost); Worked as paid intern in school’s technology department (another boost, hopefully); Medical billing with psychologist; Elected all years to represent school in AMC; Honor Roll all years (>92 quarter grades); Lights Crew (for school plays); Philosophy Club; Guitar Hero Club (a nerd can party, can’t he?); Asked to join Math Honors Society, yet I still haven’t done anything about this…; Yahoo Answers Top Contributor; Community help at Library, Senior Services, and Breast Cancer Awareness Center (no, I’m not a girl); Bethlehem Basket Ball Club - no real school sport as I do these for fun

I might be forgetting a lot but I’m not sure.
Again, sorry that all my stats just appear haphazardly.
Just so worried here because I read about lots of bright people on CC.
I’m currently applying to MITES, YESS, and SSP.
Tell me what you think…

EDIT: Oh, yeah and I think I got good recs from my teachers… Too bad I couldn’t have used one from last year teachers as they know me the best and I absolutely love them. My essays were also fine (I guess) but the 300 word cap was just a kick to the groins.

Uhm… How do I know if it submitted?

There’s a confirmation sheet (look at posts from before to see what it looks like).

Is someone out there that can rate me!?

your stats are all fine and dandy but what struggle did you go through? how has your race affected you? it seems like you grew up ok. plus you’re getting paid for your internship so theres no chance of low income…your stats are great for any college but you really need the struggle thing

@Supervisor, your have great stats. Basically everyone on here applying for MITES does. Your PSAT scores were good, as they don’t have to be perfect for MITES. That’s really cool that you’re taking a bunch of math and science classes. My school makes us take English, Soc. Studies, Science and Math all 4, so there’s not much room for extra. Being in Calc BC and Physics B, you’ll probably be placed in a higher Physics and Calc course than most. Anyways, I think you have a great chance at getting in. I’m not sure how many Indians usually apply, so I don’t know how much that would help. Truthfully, I don’t think MITES or any other program cares about ALL of you clubs/extra curricular/volunteer. Focusing on a few will that you’re passionate about is betting than listing a lot. The essays and teacher recs can really make or break you. A lot of people have a 4.0, in top 10%, or take AP classes, so essays are really important. Good Luck everyone! :)

@luthor
Sounds like someone doesn’t want me to get in
My struggle was basically that I never got along with any (sorry if I’m being a big negative at all while writing this) “white” people. They didn’t treat me as a person and I always wondered if it had to do with skin color. In the end, I got along with the Asian gang and found the friends I was hoping for.
It’s more tearful in the essay, but that’s it.

@MIT
That makes me feel much better.
Oh yeah, I have to take all of those classes as well… Just I don’t like them as much as these.
Also, I don’t have a lunch period at all in school - the reason I can fit in many classes.
I listed all of those things cause I didn’t know what to type… Of course, in the application I did focus on them.

Haven’t gotten a confirmation letter yet but will wait and hear from others that do.
Hope you all get in as well and thanks for the support!

I’m restraining myself from posting my stats because I know that they suck and that i’ll only be looking for assurance of an acceptance, which takes a lot more than stats.

@Supervisor Did you write something about how you eventually got the white man’s respect?

@somead
No, as my essay was just me getting more intellectual err… encouraged (don’t want to say the signature mark on mine here) because I went along with the Asians as opposed to these people.
Also, don’t worry about your stats - as others are saying, they want people who show that they struggle to be in the engineering field. If you are really into this and it shows up in your essays, you’ll do fine.

@ Supervisor, what do you mean by “who struggles”
It’s gonna be a struggle no matter how you look at it!
Going to college, especially a really selective one, isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

@supervisor: no I didn’t mean it all like that lol. I’m indian too and just by the demographics of the program, we’re already at a disadvantage with most of the applicants being hispanic, african american, or low income. But, your stats are great man. I didn’t mean to take away from any of that. But, us asians have a very very low chance of getting accepted. I read before that there were maybe 5 asians at most every year. so 1000 applicants, 0.5 percent admitted. But theres no harm in trying.

yay, .5 percent chance for me too because i’m asian, south asian and my stats are pretty low compared to the 4.0s on here of other asians/indians and pretty much everyone else.

I’m first generation if that helps anything.

umm, was it okay to have a password that doesn’t match the password on your email account?

@ Supervisor

lexluthor is probably just about spot on when he says that Indians aren’t really an underrepresented minority. It’s like being most flavors of asian (with the exception of Pacific Islander / Native Hawaiian). The thing is that a lot of asians and indians are as well qualified as you (good ECs btw), and perhaps many even go beyond, and this causes a greater representation in engineering and science fields.

So long story short is that it’s still worthwhile to have applied, though you can look to your ethnicity as a possible factor in being accepted or not.

Do all of ya’ll want to go into engineering?
Because i focused on the medical field, how i have a lot of experience and have 200 hours volunteering at my local hospital.
My brother is a freshman at MIT, he told me to apply because i’ll never know whats going to happen i’m more focused on the “sciences” part than the engineering.

I’m gone one day and lots of you reply!
I was just curious about everything, since these are the first summer camps I am applying to.
I know I’m Asian and that probably will make things hard but hey, I have to start somewhere.
Sorry if the message came out strong!

@Robert
I kind of do, but I’m also interested in the medical field. Maybe…bioengineering, but that covers sooo much I would probably be overwhelmed. I also volunteer at a hospital sometimes.

Otherwise, I would love to study aerospace engineering, but it’s very hard.

@Supervisor
This is my first time applying to any summer program too… I didn’t know about this until December when I was just browsing online. Btw, your stats are really good. =)

I meant biomedical engineering.

I’m really interested in biomedical engineering too! Maybe genetic engineering or pharmaceutical. They’re all so interesting! :P

Haha. Count me in too!
My two main engineer “fields” I would want to pursue are electrical and <software> vs. biomedical engineering.</software>

You know, one so I can make computers and design everything about them.
The other for helping people and having a status as that of a doctor. ^_^
