MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

@writergrl94
yes, because of your name =p. yeah i don’t like essays.

i guess i shouldn’t assume, but some people from my area already got notified.

My essays were about engineering club and I think I showed my enthusiasm for it, how being born in another country and immigrating affected my viewpoint, goals, and how others treated me. One about how mites would help me to experience engineering/science and allow me to gain more information about engineering to reach my goal, and another one about a hardship I had (kind of personal so I don’t want to say).

my essays were simple. Wrote about running Track and cross country, how my parents immigrating here affects my life, I got pretty out there on the first essay lol wrote about my passion for math. Idr what the last essay was.

@kere
I joined the group :)

My writing style is ok, but i think the content of my essays was flimsy.
for example, for the difficulties one I put that it has always been a challenge for me to organize my time.
lameee
but it was the only thing I could think of.
I’m truly busy.
You know, writing on forums and such. lol jk

and do u think that it matters where in the country you come from?

@anavazquez
i dont think the decisions are based on location that much. i know that california usually has the most accepted (around 7 or 8 per year) but thats because way more people apply from california, so it could be based on the number of applicants per state.

Hey everyone. I just got accepted into this program. I got my acceptance letter today. First of, I’d like to say congrats to all the other people that were accepted. But more importantly, I’d like to say congratulations to all the people to were not accepted. I’m sure everyone here put their absolute best into their application and there is no shame in that. And remember getting rejected from this program does not suggest that you will be openly rejected from MIT for undergrad. More than likely, the act of actually applying will help your chances when the time comes. So, I’d like to say Congratulations to everyone in this thread for going through with this application–no matter the final decision. I think everyone here deserves a round of applause…

@frotw5693:
Hey! congrats! where are u from?

Thank you. I’m from NY.

My essay 1 consisted of making sure they knew I was interested in computer science, and then I talked about MITES’s enrichment project and how it’d help introduce me to engineering jobplace skills like long-term teamwork in programming and and how the calculus and physics courses will teach me about college level depth and how the people I meet at MITES will influence me as a person.

The 2nd was about being in band and the leadership I’ve had to show for it.

3rd was about growing up in suburbia as kind of an outside looking in to how other African Americans live through media (kind of like Do the Right Thing / Boyz in the Hood / Dangerous Minds where being successful isn’t exactly looked up to as being popular or succeeding in school isn’t always cool or w/e) and wanting to be a role model who helps close the achievement gap between Blacks and other races (think Obama, but engineering / science related haha)

4th was about a fear of the dark that lasted almost until my teenage years and i linked it to how things fail in the engineering world, but we have to take risks and conquer our feers. and how even a silly fear of the dark can teach us that lesson.

that was very eloquent and very classy frotw5693 (:

Is anyone else here from NY?

well congrats(:
the essays sound good

@writergrl94 - are you a URM? your PSAT is very good.

@FROTW5693
I’m from NY and got accepted as well. Congrats! Hey, I posted a question earlier, I was actually looking for someone from NY. What are you gonna do about the Regents? I’m pretty worried about that because the dates conflict with MITES

@halfcraft, I think we should probably call in and talk the situation over with them. But in all honesty, I think they will let you, me and the other NY-ers take their regents. I believe we are allowed to ask the dean for permission to leave with the approval of our parents. Correct me if I’m wrong anyone.

@ FROTW5693: yayy! that was awesome. i completely agree! or am in the process of coming around to agreeing.

@ halfcraft: congrats!

@ yesican15: thanks! and yes, i’m a URM… i’m black (African American I guess?)… not sure, lol i was born in Zimbabwe.

:DDD you guys are so nice ^_^

i play violin :smiley: for er… 6 years now :))

Can someone tell me exactly what the acceptance packet looks like, and a rejection packet looks like for MITES? :P

Stupid Texas well, South Texas hasn’t got my letter sent to me.

@jbrown hey do you write in java??

I guess you could call it writing haha. I haven’t programmed at all since CompSci 1 Sophomore year. I might be taking CS2 next year, which would be great before college Computer Science

Did anyone else find it weird that the acceptance letters came out before online confirmation was made through our online account? Maybe it’s just me…
