Enjoy the celebration Cubs fans. I remember what fun it was when the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, ending “the curse”. H and I went to the last game in St Louis.
They just announced on WGN that some Cubbies will be on Saturday Night Live.
I don’t know about that. The Jays had the highest attendance this year in the AL, and were 3rd in MLB, and their games were consistently viewed by 20+million on tv. Who knows how many Dodgers fans there are but weren’t they 1st in attendance?, but I can assure you that the Jays are Canada’s team and if Canadian viewers were counted, it wouldn’t be a fraction. Not only that, but they’re actual season-long fans and not just bandwagon fans. ![]()
Cubs fans have waited 108 yrs…the antithesis of a bandwagon fan. :))
@88jm19 I get it, but surely you can’t deny that there are a LOT of bandwagon fans who cheered for the Cubbies.
To be honest with you, I disagree. I don’t think there are a LOT of bandwagon fans. We are a HUGE, long-suffering fan base. The fervor of our fandom may go up and down…whose wouldn’t if you lose over 100 games in a season…but our affection and support hasn’t wavered that much…hence the nickname, lovable losers.
Now did some people from other fan bases cheer for the end of our misery. I believe so. But in my opinion they aren’t “bandwagon fans” since they will go back rooting for their team. In my mind a bandwagon fan is one who adopts a team because they won…and is likely to jump ship and catch the next ‘in fashion’ team when it comes along.
Then again, I am from the Chicago area so I see mostly diehard fans.
The reality is that this world series was well watched because of ‘the story’, there were a lot of people rooting for the cubs (and the indians) who were watching it because of the history, and while the cubs and cleveland have large fan bases, they were not the main reason for the ratings. The NYC area is huge and both the Mets and Yankees have large fan bases, including across the country, the last time there was a “Subway series” the ratings seriously tanked. I didn’t see the final ratings, but a large percent of the world series audience, much like the superbowl, is not going to be fans of either team, likely going to be people watching for other reasons…and this series, like the 2003 world series with the Sox, had history going for it, the story, etc (actually two of them).
The Red Sox contributed their general manager, manager, and several key players to the Cubs and Indians. I am happy for these people. This sure looks to me like the Sox made some personnel mistakes a few years ago and now have to watch them in the World Series from their television sets at Fenway.
Today was an epic day. About 5 million estimated, but it was truly a sea of humanity. I cried when they passed and I actually saw KB holding up the trophy. That’s when I really knew it was real. After that, everything else was gravy.
Combining two threads, I heard that the Chicago cast of Hamilton sang “Go Cubs Co” during the curtain call last night.
@Marilyn thanks for mentioning that -

alwaysamom, can you provide a link to your claim of 20+ million TV viewers on a regular basis?
i’ll be seriously interested to see it.
TIA
If there are any Chicagoans on this thread, please chime in on my thread

20+million viewers for the Blue Jays? wow!
Did anyone see the Cubs and Bill Murray on SNL last night??
Yes. Found the bump and grind a bit odd.
I’m biased but loved it! The SNL and Second City connection was evident in their celebrating the Cubs victory in Mets/Yankees territory.
As for the bump and grind, it made me blush/laugh. First, they’re young. Second, Rizzo has a strange pelvic thing he does when he bats, so I think it’s just him. He also has an amazing backstory. He battled cancer in 2008 and in 2016 is a World Series champion. He is very active at Lurie’s Children Hospital and started the Rizzo Family Foundation, which assists families dealing with cancer. He is a stellar, very fine, young man.
The song was great, the other was in poor taste, I thought.
The song was hilarious! Bill Murray was awesome!
Rest of the show…meh.
