MOB dress help needed!

I think it’s become popular because people really want to wear black (it looks good) but don’t want to wear black to a wedding – so navy is the next best thing.

D’s FMIL wore a long black gown as the entire wedding party wore black.
The MOB wore black.
Her dress in the pictures looked very nice but it is clearly not her color and
did nothing for her. I had suggested a deep blue gray for her but black was just easier.
With so much black I wonder if the pictures are going to be a big blob of black with heads
attached.

Just a question, do brides really request certain colors from the moms? I don’t think I’ve seen that at our friends kids’ weddings. The most stunning “mom” was a friend who had that Pappel off shoulder, shutter pleat dress that is around every year but she had it in bronze. Stunning. I would think a neutral dress like that would be my go-to regardless of whatever “colors” the bridesmaids were wearing. I never wear navy so that would throw me if suggested. BTW I loved, loved that Anthropologie dress a few pages back. I ordered it just because.

@momofthreeboys I asked the same question several pages back as I found it surprising that so many brides were weighing in on MOB/MOG dresses. :-??

Which Anthro dress did you order?

My DD told me the bridesmaid color…and said I could wear anything I wanted but that color. She suggested navy…but it’s a great color on me. Like I said…I have three navy possibilities already IN my closet.

I remember my mother talking to me about her dress, she and the MOG talked to each other, but just about whether to go long or short. (They both went long.) I’m pretty sure I told my mother she could wear what she liked. I didn’t even know what color my matron-of-honor’s dress would be. I’d told her what my flower colors were (tiger lilies and something yellow) and let her go from there.

Here is what I REALLY want. I want a long dress, some kind of short or cap sleeves. A darker pink or lavender. Comfortable. And at least somewhat reasonably priced…like not $500.

What I do NOT want. No beads or sequins, no jackets. No itchy lace. Nothing that screams “MOB”. No strapless. No gathered waist (although two of the four dresses I have have a somewhat gathered waist…but not a lot of fabric in the skirt).>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It sounds like you want a fairly simply long sheath style. In a lovely dusky rose in a lovely fabric maybe with a styled neckline of some sort would be pretty. Honestly, why not look around for a seamstress? Where I had my dress altered offers seamstress service as well.

I know @VaBluebird.

I should go to my seamstress who also is a dressmaker.

That might work. But really…I like to try things on. And if I order something…I better be sure I want it!

No, I don’t want a sheath style. I’d like a slight A line.

@doschicos - this one. Loved it. Thought for a week or so about it. Couldn’t resist. It looks a tad strange on the model, but I decided it’s the way she’s posed. It is very much a dress that can be dressed up or down. It was suggested a month ago for someone that had been told to find something “boho.”

Oh yes, I remember VeryHappy posted that dress. It is lovely. I hope you got the 20% off sale today, @momofthreeboys. If not, call up and get them to apply it.

That dress is nice… it apparently it has a LOT of fabric below the “waist”. @momofthreeboys wondering how you will like it on.

@momofthreeboys: Yep, I ordered it. Also posted about it, when I was trying to channel the “rustic chic” vibe.

It’s in the trunk of my car and I’m going to return it.

I like it very much on the model – love, love, love the beading on top, and the halter top. But it turns out it’s an empire waist, and the fabric below is very full. I felt like I looked pregnant in it, and since I’m only five feet tall, that’s not a good look.

I hope it looks good on you and that you like it. I wish it looked good on me.

How about this Alex Evenings off the shoulder: www.macys.com/shop/product/alex-evenings-ruched-off-the-shoulder-gown? It is also available in Dillards.

The anthropolohie dress is a style that works well for me. I need a higher neckline and exposed shoulders is better for me than exposed upper chest. I am also narrower in the hips than the top so fullness is not to much of an issue. It is the perfect summer occasion dress. I am short waisted so not so empire for me snd I am 5’10" and all legs so I liked the length which shows off the sandals. Plus all you need are earrings and bracelets so bonus. I am wearing it tomorrow to a couples wedding shower for the son of good friends and it would definitely work for a non fancy pants outdoor summer wedding.

Sounds like a great dress for you! I sure wish I were 5’ 10"!!!

VH, too bad about that dress. I know you were excited.

You nailed it regarding navy. I’d be glad to wear black, but need a bit of color for a wedding. Now on to the next wedding. D is about to send out her save the date cards for May of next year. I need a bit of relief before going though all this again!

I grew up sewing, have tailoring skills, and in the midst of all the dress trying on, really wished I had time to make my own dress. My step mom usually has items made in the slightly stiff Thai silk, which is the most elegant look ever. Having one made, especially for those of us with bodies that don’t conform to standard American sizes might save a great deal of grief.

@“great lakes mom” ack…I know this belongs in the other thread…but we aren’t sending our Save the Date for our next May wedding until September end of!

If you send save the dates early, too many might actually come!

Just got back from taking a friend (whose daughter’s wedding is next Saturday) shopping for shoes and earrings to go with her MOB dress. And one of the bridesmaids still doesn’t have her dress. Too close for comfort for me!

Never mind.

Went shopping with H for his first ever suit. Never mind that he is 68 yrs old. I convinced him that
our friends will be dying off soon and he can use it as a pallbearer :P.
He is tall and skinny with really long arms. Joseph A. Bank could only fit him with a custom suit.
BTW their big sale starts this Monday.
Went to Nordstrom’s and, wow, such a nice look on him and at so much $$$.
Oh well. That is done. Shoes from Nord’s Rack.

I found my jacket! Ha Ha only $3118.00. No, still looking.

GLM, Thai Silk sounds just fabulous.
