MOB dress help needed!

Always nice to buy things that don’t wrinkle–one less thing to be concerned about. I love that there are many garments to choose among these days that don’t wrinkle.

I tried on a gorgeous lavender dress today. Totally the right color. Fit was great, as was the cut and fabric of the dress. BUT…spaghetti straps? I don’t think it’s my best look. But it is an option! Very simple lines…beautiful way the skirt hung.

@thumper1 Might there be any fabric left from a hem that you could have wider straps made? Or maybe add a shawl?

It’s long… it it’s not THAT long. A shawl would look nice…but honestly…I don’t want to fuss with a shawl.

This is the first dress I’ve tried on that’s the color I’m looking for. I’m hopeful there are others.

Maybe if you can take a photo that has the color correct, you can show it to salesclerks and they can help you find one of a similar color?

I’m going to be going shopping with a friend. I’m sure I can explain what colors I’m looking for. But it was nice to see that the color I thought would look good…did. I think I still want to try some baby girl pink as well.

Wedding isn’t until May so I have time.

@musicmom1215, this time of year Macy’s usually has something called “thanks for sharing” where you give. 25 buck donation or something and then you get 10% in store credit for everything you buy between now and about January. Depending on price of dress, it might be worth it. And yes, they have sales and coupons often. If you don’t have their credit card, if you open one I think you get a percentage off everything for a day or 2.

@thumper1 - if you don’t want bare arms/spaghetti straps, could you find a shrug/bolero to go over the dress?

Something like this:

The dress has some fabric detailing at the top that does not lend itself to a jacket or bolero being over it. A shawl would work…but I’m not thrilled with the idea.

I think I will just keep looking.

ETA…the dress is really very plain…and the fabric detailing at the top makes the dress. It would just look like a plain a line lavender dress without it…I don’t think covering it up is a good option.

Wel…crazy idea but if you reach the “I need this over with” phase and the dress is affordable
buy two and have a seamstress create straps that flatter you.

You still have lots of time. I did not and spent more than expected but loved what
I chose and once done was able to move on to (for me) more fun parts of the wedding.

@oregon101 this dress is at least eight inches too long. If I wanted wider straps…I don’t think I would need to buy a second dress (and for the record…I’m not doing that even IF it would, work…because that means this isn’t THE dress).

If I’m going to do that, I’ll just buy a lot of fabric, find a dressmaker…and have a dress made…and believe me…that thought has crossed my mind,

Wider straps would look funny with the fabric detail at the top of the bodice. I can’t describe it well…but it’s like folded over fabric…and it’s really nice. Wide straps would detract from the appearance of the dress.

I don’t have the arms or skin for spaghetti straps, but more than that, I want to be comfortable. Wearing a strapless bra all night would be torture for me! I am looking for dresses that don’t require special underwear. lol

@thumper1 : Like a cowl neckline?

Has anyone ever bought from this site? They have some really pretty dresses!

Just for fun, compare these two dresses.

Same designer.

Same designer, but note - the dresses are from its different lines. The TJ dress is ML - the cheaper line that is priced much lower and targeted at less affluent, younger shopper.

@VeryHappy yes…the fabric at the top of the bodice of the dress I tried on had a sort of cowl roll over. It was very pretty…and really MADE the dress. Not covering it with a jacket.

D bought a bridesmaid dress from China. It was NOT as advertised and they refused to give her a refund. She had to order a 2nd dress that had to have major alterations and still didn’t fit properly (she had red welts on her arms because armholes were way too small and she has very thin arms). We will NOT order dresses from China that don’t have a store in the US (we didn’t have a choice since we were going along with what the bride wanted). Another of the bridesmaids (groom’s sister) also had to order and pay for 2 dresses for similar reasons. ARGH!

Well, back to square one. Just found out the MOB is planning to wear a knee-length dress, although she has not found one yet.
