MOB dress help needed!

Can you snip the lining off to deflate the puffiness?

I don’t know if I did the right thing for my son’s wedding 2 years ago, although I never heard any backlash. My DIL would not give me any direction, and told both her mother and myself we could wear anything we wanted. Her mother is not usually a dress wearer, and really wanted to wear a pantsuit! While I started dress shopping, I didn’t purchase anything until she did. Turns out she bought a navy long dress with a jacket; the bridesmaid also were wearing long navy. I asked my DIL again about what she wanted me to wear, and if she would prefer I wear navy; again, she said anything I wanted to wear was fine. She really is not one for details, and even told me she didn’t know wearing complementary colors was a thing :wink:

I found a dress I really liked which was black with some pink sequins. I showed my DIL, and I think she showed her mother, who said it was fine. Again, my DIL just wanted us to be comfortable; the color or style was not important to her. I wish I could be so laid back :slight_smile: So my dress while not dressier, was a different color than the girls and her mother.

That sleeve length would be fine on me.

@VeryHappy yes…first stop is the fifth floor of Lord and Taylor…the “dress floor”. Then probably Macy’s, then maybe Saks. All have good selections…and usually good sales!

I could’ve afforded a more expensive dress than the MOB when my son got married 2 years ago, but I was sensitive to that fact and decided that I wouldn’t buy an expensive looking dress. I certainly didn’t want to show up the MOB. My budget for the dress was still probably higher than hers, but our dresses didn’t appear to be significantly different.

If I keep the dress, I will definitely remove the netting from the lining. I still don’t know what the MOB is wearing. I really wish she would pick something so I would have a little guidance. I don’t want to show up anybody. And I don’t mean outspending her; I just don’t want to glitter and shine when she is wearing just a plain old “Sunday” dress. I would love to wear black and stand on the back row for the pictures!

I have no intention of sharing the cost of my dress with MOG…and I won’t be asking her the cost of her dress either. Why would that matter at all…as long as both of us look great and feel comfortable.

@my-3-sons - Jasmin bridal’s line for Mothers called Jasmine Black Label has many similar styles to your violet dress in many, many colors. Someone had mentioned them a few pages back. Here’s one:

Thanks, I was looking for thumper1, not myself. Two of mine are already married and the third is not there yet. There are some pretty dresses on that site.

@greenwitch

Some of those are nice. I didn’t see the prices anywhere! Guess I have to trek to one of those shops to see this line. The nearest one to me…about an hour away.

Maybe if NYC is not successful, i will do that.

Folks…really…I’m not an odd size. I wore an Ann Taylor Loft silk shift dress to a wedding last fall…size 6…and it fit great.

But these gowns seem to run very differently in terms of size.

@oldfort, I think that this particular dress on that model looks like a bathrobe. Not DVF’s other dresses, many of which I like a lot. I did not issue a blanket condemnation of DVF.

YMMV

The dress I posted was NOT a DVF dress.

But it took me months to find a dress I actually like…and I do NOT think it looks like a bathrobe. And that’s what’s important. I’m just not sure the sizing will work for me…as it doesn’t come in a petite.

@thumper1, what is important is what it looks like on YOU, not the model, and whether YOU like it. I hope the color and sizing work for you.

I didn’t get that oldfort was somehow extrapolating from the fact that this dress is a faux wrap that I thought there was something wrong with all wrap dresses, and thus with DVF. I like wrap dresses. I like surplice tops. And I also like Ellen Tracy. IIRC, the drop waisted pale yellow linen dresses worn by my bridesmaids were Ellen Tracy.

Posting a pretty find…

Beautiful dress B.B.!

I second that it is a beautiful dress. I really like the detail (wrap), it is different.

There aren’t too many nice looking dresses with long sleeves!

The long sleeves will help with any air-conditioning at the venue.

Ok, so the dress I really liked from NM, my size finally came up online and I ordered it right away. It came today, unfortunately I would need to have a bust of 40 to fill it and I am far from it. :frowning:

@oldfort

I’m having a similar issue. The top parts of these dresses are just made for folks much better endowed than I am.

That is a bummer, oldfort. Lovely dress at a lovely discount.
