Thanks, @jym626 for those links. I had also never heard of Last Call with Neimans and visited the site and there are some very good prices, plus additional sales on top of that. I ordered two tops unrelated to the wedding. This thread is getting expensive, LOL.
^^ Yes, thanks @jym626. I looked at the Norstrom Rack site just now for my rehearsal dinner dress and found two Komarov dresses with sleeves that look comfortable and appropriate that I have tentatively put in my cart. (Just want to go through my closet before ordering, as shopping from my closet is my first preference.) I have a Nordstrom Rack just seven miles away but even so, find online shopping easier.
The beauty of online shopping at the Rack and HauteLook is that returns can be made at the brick and mortar stores, and they give you 90 days to do so!
(HauteLook is like Nordstrom’s version of RueLaLa. )
Wasn’t familiar with HauteLook. Thanks!
@soozievt lord and Taylor really has fabulous sales. I would think now is the time to get some good sale dresses especially for fall.
I bought this is the “most likely” dress for my daughter’s early September wedding. It’s a morning wedding with a brunch reception in an outdoorsy setting. I still have time to switch it up, but I think it works well. (The bridesmaids are wearing dark teal). The only issue is I can’t afford to gain a pound if I want to wear this.

@moonchild That is a very beautiful dress that works so nicely in an outdoors setting for brunch and with the bridesmaids in teal.
Beautiful dress!
Gorgeous dress and a very motivational, too!
OK my fashionable friends…
So, going back to my MOB searches…
As mentioned in a previous post, I went ahead and ordered my first choice dress for D1 and my first choice dress for D2’s weddings, so far. Both arrived today.
As a reminder, I am generally a size 16, and most of my current clothes are that size or XL, but I have a large bust. The dresses I was looking into only went up to size 16.
For D2’s evening wedding in NYC…you may recall my first choice online was this:
While it says it is a fit and flare dress, I would say it is a straight dress, as soon as I pulled it out of the box, let alone on. It really is a beautiful dress. It is dressy without being a gown. The sleeve length hits the elbow which I think is good for me compared to sleeveless dresses, of which there are many. I am home alone and unfortunately, could not fully zip the back zipper which doesn’t go to the top of the dress, but more to the middle of the back. I think the zipper would zip, but the dress is snug. I really like it. It ideally could use being taken out two inches, which I don’t see as a possible…how that would be done. The bust was fitted but actually pretty good. I would almost say it was snuggest around the midsection. I had on a nude bra and as I predicted, more than just the straps show through the upper mesh section of the dress. But it simply looked like a nude slip if up close. I suppose other options could be pursued as far as the bra. Unfortunately, I could not wear it as is because it is a bit too snug. I see the options with this dress being:
- Keep it as an incentive to lose 15 pounds…a scary thought because I generally believe in only buying clothes that fit when purchased, though I need to drop weight and was hoping to for the wedding anyway. Three years ago when I lost weight, I was down 15 from my present point.
- See if there is any way to alter it, though I don’t see how that could be done.
- Look into all that Spanx sort of undergarment stuff that I have never tried and don’t own (but may not be comfortable for the occasion.
- Give it up and look further.
As I was trying it on, I was laughing to myself (and given that this is College Confidential after all), that this was sorta like Early Decision…had it fit, I could have applied to just one and gotten into my favorite and been done early and very happy. But I could put myself on the deferral list and do everything possible to get into it by Regular Decision time. Hmmm…
OK, onto D2’s private daytime wedding event dress…here was the one I had ordered so far as a first choice on paper:

It is also a size 16. It fits. It is pretty. It is fairly straight, but not a sheath. I’m not sure about it. For one thing, the nude slip is a separate piece. Didn’t love the slip which seemed rather short (compared to the dress), though I suppose a different nude slip could be purchased. That said, you may recall that I mentioned I had very recently bought a dress online unrelated to the weddings and haven’t worn it yet. It fits great and I think is more of the fit and flare style that is likely a good choice for me. It is also a 16. I was thinking it actually could work for D1’s wedding and many of you agreed. When I compare it to the salmon dress linked above that I just tried on, I think I like the dress I recently bought better. Here is that dress just to compare but also to know a style that fits well on me and looks pretty good (I don’t think I look good generally speaking, but all things considered, I gotta wear something):

Jumping back to D2’s dressier evening wedding…perhaps I should try other dresses, even though I like the first one, but it has the “currently snug” dilemma attached to it! Of the dresses I initially bookmarked and shared here, I’m thinking maybe I should try:

In the Navy/Nude color
Have at it…
EDIT…the Kay Unger dress no longer seems to be available in a size16, just 14 and so gotta nix it.
The Tadashi dress may have issues RE the bra showing too. The Unger dress would not have those issues and is very striking. How are you with square necklines? They look great on many people. I’d probably order both so I could try them in and then choose.
Up drew, @moonchild . Buy some spanx and relax
The Kay Unger dress only goes up to a 14 (oh I see you noticed that) . Might be time, when you return the ones that are no-go’s to Nordies and try on dresses in the store.
@soozievt I like the Cherished Moments dress you had previously bought more than the Floral Trellis dress and it looks more comfy. I’d stick with what you have for the day wedding.
For the more formal wedding, I’d say take dress #1 and bring it with you and go try on some spanx with it, unless it would be too uncomfortable and restrictive. Comfort should be a priority. Otherwise, I prefer the Kay Unger dress of the 2 choices you posted. Is it available elsewhere or in one of the NM stores? You could call NM and ask them to do an inventory/store search or look elsewhere online for it.
Thanks for the input. As I had to edit my post, the Kay Unger only goes to size 14, or at least that is what is showing as available.
Also, what do you think of the following dress…ironically, I posted a link to this on ANOTHER thread when someone else was looking for suggestions! It has a shorter sleeve, but isn’t sleeveless (talking of it in black for D2’s evening wedding):
@moonchild, if you fit the remaining sizes, they have that dress at a great price here, and free shipping if you have a free membership to ShopRunner via AmEx.
@soozievt I actually like that dress in #134 better than the Kay Unger dress - and its cheaper!
I do like the dress in #134 too, and no hassles with undergarments! Yeah!
Maybe I should try a couple other things even though I liked the first dress for D2 the best, but given that it is currently snug…
The Nue by Shani Laser Cut Fit and Flare Dress at Nordstrom’s is nice and may be a good style for me. A bit more sleeve would have been better (as in my original first choice dress), but may be worth taking a look at. The laser cut aspect, while like lace, is not quite like the typical looking lace dresses.
The size chart for the Nue by Shani dress for size 16 is more generous that the currently a little too snug Adriana Papell first choice dress that arrived today’s size chart for the same size.
Re Himom’s post in 135: That’s a completely different dress! Fabric, print, neckline, back neckline, sleeves and seaming on the bodice and skirt are all different!
is that the correct link?
