MOB dresses for both daughters' weddings

This style would be good for me, I think. However, D had said to not coordinate with color scheme of the bridal party which is burgundy and gold. I suppose I could run it by her, but of course would respect her wishes.

@thumper1 on the Macy’s dress, I was only considering it in Navy.

The dress in post 160 looks to me like the same beige as all the other beige dresses. Why wouldn’t that be OK if the others are? But it’s out of your target price range.

OK, I’m going to weigh options, and thanks for indulging me as I search and contemplate. I gotta move onto preparing for Passover seder at my place with D1 and her fiancé! I will try to update D2 with new dress links even though she hasn’t gone over the original email yet, LOL. I should consider some to order, even though I love the one I did order that is too snug.

Having a dress that is too snug would just be uncomfortable. I’d order several while your size is still available, before your selections are further limited by available sizes.

As an online shopper you most likely already do this, but if not, here is a tip: If you find a dress you like, goggle the dress as you may find it available at a store you are not searching, and cheaper. I have been doing this for 30 years or so, and my friends always call me to help them find just the right thing, whether a dress or a type of item they are searching for. I have been labeled by friends and family as the Queen of Goggling!!

My daughter was looking at a pair of wedges to wear with her wedding dress as the ceremony is outside on grass; I found a great Kate Spade wedge (last years version) for $130 at 6pm. She loves them and we are done!! The only times my skills did not work was for my dress for my son’s wedding. I purchased directly from Tadashi Shoji knowing I would find the same dress in the store, or Tadashi would reduced the price. Well, that never happened in the four months I had the dress, so I kept it as everyone loved it and told me to not pick a different dress. Now I am doing the same for my daughter’s wedding; found a dress online with Tadashi and my daughter loves it. It is available in store, but in a different color that we don’t like, so I will be spending more than I wanted on my dress yet again :frowning: At least we are saving money in other areas and I want to look great at the wedding also; my daughter has giving me permission to look fabulous

@thumper1 Cross posted with you. The dress in post #160 is not just beige but has a gold skirt and gold mixed with beige on top. I think the shape is good but that D2 could nix it since gold is one of the color schemes of the bridal party and she said not to match up. I didn’t think of that dress so much as an ivory dress.

In terms of ivory dresses, she asked me not to wear Ivory because she is wearing Ivory. I may show her the link to the dress that is ivory lace on top but black lace on the bottom half. Not sure how she’d feel about that.

Thumper, no, I do not think it looks cheap; the beige one is ok, it is the navy i was concerned about. The ribbons sewn on in a lace pattern make it look like the fabric is lumpy. I had to zoom in to see that the bumps and unevenness was actually “lace.” I wonder if that fabric will not look good in pictures.

@HiMom…as I posted earlier, I won’t be wearing the favorite dress I ordered for D2’s wedding as is. Would not look well or be comfortable since it is too snug. The only way I can keep it is if I tried it with buying Spanx to see if it made a difference, or lose weight. I agree with you that I should move forward to order some other dresses I like before their availability is an issue. I need to mull over the latest “finds” online and also see what D2 thinks after sending her links, IF she gets around to checking it out.

@snowball, yes, that is good advice about googling a dress I like to see who else carries it and compare prices and availability. I have done that before and need to remember to do it again with a name brand. Many of my regular clothing online shopping doesn’t work that way as I am buying the brand of the catalogue, not a brand sold anywhere else. But that is not the case with many of these occasion dresses, and so thanks for the reminder!

@BunsenBurner it’s the navy one that I like! I don’t really like any of the beige dresses. I just think beige is a blah color. Even with beading.

I like that navy dress from Macy’s. @soozievt could order it…and see for herself. It could be lovely in person…or,it might be junky looking.

I think a color other than beige should be considered. I mean really…that color is so “MOB or MOG”…and I thought the mom here didn’t want something that screamed MOB…

@soozievt what other colors do,you like…beside beige…and the gold and burgundy that are out.

You are right, @thumper1 that I prefer the dress not to look super “MOB,” but also D doesn’t want me to wear ivory or white.

What about any of these?

@BunsenBurner Thanks for that link. I may not have checked it out before (I am losing track!). I don’t normally buy Plus Sizes but it is a possibility! For the moment, I am shying away from sleeveless.

But on that site, I have now bookmarked:

I’m going to go through the options I have saved, including new ones and think more about it tomorrow and also email them to D. I am enjoying this convo a lot, but if I don’t start prepping the Passover Seder, there ain’t gonna be one.

I totally agree that Ivory or white wouldn’t be good. I’m thinking a color would be nice…something in the blue family…or a darker coral, or a teal, or something. Or something…other than beige (because I don’t like beige).

This one in “Aqua” looks stunning:

Note that this dress also has that raised lace pattern, but it is much more delicate than the pattern on the one I was talking about previously (navy Alex Evenings). Compare to this “lace”:

Agree…this one in the teal is gorgeous!

The link in post 171 has a lot of great options including some you have already liked but in a plus size. If you haven’t already done so I would suggest you try a Tadashi dress on in a regular 14 and 16 and see how that brand runs. ( just checked my closet and I have 2 Tadashi dresses and both are a 10 with no alterations)
The dress I wore to a recent wedding was a Adrianna Papell beaded dress. It had no defined waistline. I found it at an outlet and bought a 12 because that was what they had. It was fine through the midsection. Long in the straps and big in the bust. I had it shortened from the top. In most dresses I can wear a 10 or even an 8. From my experience Adrianna Papell runs small. A 10 might have been tight. I have no defined waist.
Do you have a friend who can go shopping with you. I went with a good friend who has a great eye. She had me try on things I wouldn’t have been drawn to but ended up looking great on. I find if I go alone I end up trying the same styles and colors over and over again.

I agree that is a very pretty dress, but I’m not sure it would be the best choice for the OP’s figure (if I’m recalling the description correctly). That long, unbroken line is not always flattering on a shorter person who carries her weight in the midsection.

I had seen that Tadashi dress (the one in teal), but for one thing, it seems too straight for my figure. I think fit and flare or A line or a little less straight/fitted on the bottom half would flatter me more. While the teal is pretty, I am not sure how great that would look in bridal party photos when they are in burgundy and gold. I like it better in the blackberry but D didn’t want me to match the bridal colors. I just think clashing wouldn’t look great either.

What color is the other mother wearing?

It sounds like you think only a neutral beige will not clash with anything…or won’t stand out.

What about a light blue? Or that dark coral?

Talk to D2. See what she says.

We went to a wedding three weeks ago. The bridesmaids wore a pretty grey dress. Guess wht, the MOB also, wore a grey dress. Believe me, no one mixed up the MOB and the bridesmaids! Their dresses were very different. MOB had a lace dress. Bridesmaids not lace at all…fitted and slinky.

Maybe a variation on color but in. Different style will fit in…and not clash…but still look nice.
