Hi.
If anyone has experience with Moravian’s merit aid, can you please share what the potential is? I was told they do not offer full scholarship now (they used to several years ago). As a D3 institution there is no athletic scholarship either. Was anyone offered merit that was more than their maximum scholarship (Presidential)?
Or maybe, you were able to negotiate with them by presenting a better offer from a similar college?
Any leads would be very appreciated!
PS. I have similar questions regarding Susquehanna University.

Just to clarify, my student should qualify for their top merit automatic scholarships, but I was wondering if there is a potential to get full (or almost full) tuition scholarship in those two colleges.
Where schools give full academic scholarships they are usually endowed scholarships and/or the number can be counted on one hand.
My son got his largest merit aid offer from Susquehanna and they are frequently mentioned among the top merit aid grantors in the country. He got slightly more than a 50% grant. So cost still in the 30s. I loved the campus and area, reminded me of my alma mater, but he thought it was too far away.

My son was offered a full tuition scholarship to Susquehanna, but this was quite a few years ago. He ended up not going because he decided to study engineering.
I liked the school so much that I took my two younger kids to see it. My daughter got into the honors program and had a good four years there. She got some aid, but I can’t remember how much. I do recall that they gave her a stipend and free piano lessons if she participated in the jazz band. She studied art history and photography and had excellent professors. She graduated in 2020, so that was tough, but she made friends that she still has today. It’s funny, several of them were from PA and moved to Maine, but last year she moved from Maine to PA! She’s teaching piano and editing articles.
I think she liked everything about Susquehanna except for the food. She did feel that the curriculum was a little too easy, but being in the honors program helped.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, those schools are very generous (especially for high stat students) and only a few offer full scholarships. Was wondering if that is the case with these 2 schools. I obviously researched their websites before posting here, but didn’t find anything. So, I thought that maybe there are scholarships that are not widely advertised but could bring tuition down significantly.
So glad to hear your positive feedback! I wonder if SU stopped offering the scholarship your son got a few yers ago. Do you happen to remember the name of it or if it was advertized when he applied?
At first they offered him a half scholarship. When they knew he was wavering, they upped it to a full one. I THINK it was called the Presidential Scholarship, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone have information on Moravian?
My daughter applied to SU and earned acceptance within a few days. They offered her Presidential scholarship which is $44K (full tuition is $61K) + early admit grant which is $2K. She wants to visit school. Visiting will also mean that she gets $2K visit grant. That is a total merit of $48K per year, making tuition $13K per year. We thought this offer is generous. Will see where other colleges stand. We understand that full tuition or full ride scholarship are a rare phenomenon (though one can always hope). Will see what happens next. But first she needs to like the school, of course.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words.
I also hope she will like the school and give it a serious consideration.

Curious what Moravian will offer (she really liked the school when we visited).
Since yesterday 2 more similar colleges accepted her with their maximum merit scholarships. Offers are comparable with Susquehanna’s. We certainly feel grateful and hopeful that even more merit will come her way… I know that full scholarship offers are usually by invitation only and usually happen during winter time…

Anybody had experience negotiating merit with Moravian University? If so, please share it.
D26 was just admitted to Susquehanna with a similar merit package. Your numbers above don’t include Room & Board (or maybe you’re local and student would be a commuter?).
We haven’t visited the campus yet but may in the Spring depending how the other applications start to come back.
Sorry - no information on Moravian.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Congratulations on your D’s acceptance! Yes, $13K is tuition only. No, my student will not be a commuter and room and board will significantly increase the cost. We are thinking about visiting November Open House because it will increase scholarship by $2K per year (visit grant). Visit in spring will not do it. So, we decided to visit now and if she becomes seriously interested in this college, we will visit again in spring. But I want to make sure she gets that $8K ($2K * 4 years) in case she decides to go there. Or maybe we will use this offer to negotiate with another college that she will like better! You never know.

Every school is different on this front - for sure - but my limited experience suggests that most schools that will negotiate will look at the net price and not the amount of merit (you may already be thinking of it that way). Though that $2K/year just for visiting is definitely a nice kicker on the bigger merit award!
We’re about a 6 hour drive so making it there by 11/22 isn’t going to be an option for us.
Yes, of course, we look at COA (net price) and not the amount of merit! I apologize if I was not clear enough. Merit is directly related to the bottom number, so I was talking about it.
6 hrs of drive is a lot. We are twice closer, so it is more doable. Plus, we do not have that many schools on the list. So, we plan to visit most (or maybe even all). All the schools on the list are her safeties. We do not chase prestige, but we do chase merit. That being said, fit is #1 priority. If a college can potentially work out, then COA will be deciding factor. Based on our limited experience, most competitive offers usually come (or not come
) in spring.

We have the same outlook. Though “prestige” can definitely be a fit factor for some.
Susquehanna was sort of a last minute decision to apply but ultimately it likely won’t fit on a couple of fronts. D26 likely looking at something a bit bigger. She was admitted to Kutztown as well (bigger and about $10K/year less). Still waiting on the bulk of her decisions to come in but if we end up going back to Kutztown for admitted students day, we’ll probably make the extra drive over to Susquehanna to take a look.
