More celebrity RIPs

I saw that. I am surprised he was only 84, somehow I thought he was older.

Not a celebrity but a very famous (and controversial) person:

Isn’t he the one who basically stole the DNA photo and data from the woman who never was given credit for these findings?

That’s a mischaracterization. He was a complicated figure, and I think the NY Times obituary did a masterful job of putting his achievements and controversies in context. I met him and spent a little time with him several years ago.

I just listened to Kimmel’s tribute to his friend and band leader. It was so beautiful!

You are thinking of Rosalind Franklin. Watson, Crick, and her research partner received the Nobel Prize for deciphering DNA’s structure but she was left out. Only 3 can share a Nobel Prize, so “why not leave out the woman”……. Sexist times.

Oh my gosh - Jimmy Kimmel took me on an emotional rollercoaster last night - he cried, I cried, he laughed, I laughed, then we cried some more. Cleto Escobedo III was not “only” his bandleader, but his best friend, since he was 9 years old (Cleto was 10 when they met) - they were inseparable.

If you need a good, healthy cry, I suggest watching the show from last night. The show will be taking the next couple of days off.

No, her role was definitely ignored, her work was misappropriated by her lab partner (he’s the one who gave the image to Watson and Crick without her knowledge) etc. However, she didn’t get the Nobel because it cannot be awarded posthumously, and she had died (at age 34) before the prize was issued. It may not have been awarded due to sexism, but we will never know because she died so young.

Even if Franklin had lived I doubt she’d have received the prize. I’m not disagreeing with you–I gave the short Cliffs Notes version for those who weren’t familiar with the story.

Lise Meitner, working with Otto Hahn on nuclear fission, was treated similarly. She was nominated 49 times and never won, though her partner won the Nobel (in the 50s, I think?)

That’s not entirely accurate. She had died of cancer by the time they won the Nobel and Nobel prizes are not awarded post-humously. However, there is no doubt she never got the credit she deserved and that Watson and crick were happy to use her photographs without which they might never have figured out the structure while never treating her like a real colleague or considering her their equal.

ETA: sorry should have read the other messages before responding.

Sally Kirkland, an actress known for her sassy, no-nonsense persona and whose prolific career included an appearance in an Andy Warhol film, a groundbreaking Off Broadway play in which she performed fully nude, and an Oscar nomination as best actress for the 1987 film “Anna,” died on Tuesday in Palm Springs, Calif. She was 84. She brought her trademark sexuality and swagger to “The Sting” (1973), playing the vampy stripper love interest of Robert Redford’s con artist character.

Not sure why but I had thought he passed years ago. I know, mixing up my reggae musicians. You rarely hear the name but hear it a lot when I was younger.

I put a second article in case CNN locks on you.
