I was today years old when I learned he was married to Andrea Mitchell. RIP.

I heard of the death on TV when I was in another room and I thought they said Andrea Mitchell died, so I was surprised this morning when they said it was Greenspan.

He was an interesting guy. Started college as a music major and then switched to economics.

She went to my HS (years before) so this was known to me.

David Clayton-Thomas, a homeless Toronto runaway who learned guitar in prison and went on to become the lead singer of the gritty, blues-inspired band Blood, Sweat & Tears, whose songs like “Spinning Wheel” and covers like “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” neared the top of the Billboard charts, died on Wednesday in Toronto. He was 84.

With Mr. Clayton-Thomas at the helm, BS&T played the Woodstock festival in 1969 and won the Grammy Award for album of the year in 1970 for its self-titled release, which included a cover of Brenda Holloway’s “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” Mr. Clayton-Thomas’s original “Spinning Wheel,” Laura Nyro’s “And When I Die” and a version of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child.” The track “Variations on a Theme by Erik Satie” also won a Grammy for best contemporary instrumental performance.

One of my favorites. He sure did create some fabulous music.

I saw Blood Sweat and Tears in concert at Blossom Music Center in a concert that set attendance records. BST were a couple of hours late. The opening act sat on a stool and played guitar and sang for a couple of hours. He was a no name, but he was fabulous…John Denver, before he became famous.

Blood Sweat and Tears did a fabulous very long concert once they arrived. One I’ll never forget.

May he RIP. He made a lot of people happy.

For my 18th BD, my dad took me to Vegas. We rode down in our hotel elevator with a bunch of rowdy guys. Didn’t know who they were until we got off the elevator and learned from the commotion they were the entertainment. I didn’t pay attention to BST until much later in life.

(Elvis and Bing were headlining other hotels. We went to see Steve Allen :woman_facepalming:)

Cause of death released - AIDS and chronic polysubstance abuse. How tragic. You really don’t hear about AIDS deaths much anymore. Such a horrific way to die.

I was in San Francisco for a conference, and we were (luckily) staying in the W Hotel.
The Band Train was the entertainment for the conference.
When we went back to the hotel, we rode up the elevator with Train.

In other news, I actually saw the real Elvis in Las Vegas, in the 1970s. I was pretty young (maybe 12), but it was quite a big deal. I was the 3rd person from the stages at the long tables that went out from the stage.

Any impressions of Train from riding in the elevator wit them? I have tickets to see them in concert this summer. Haha.

Hope this isn’t a premonition by putting them in the RIP thread

Never heard of The Band Train, so I Googled. Now I know why – they’re from the 90’s. Music stopped for me in the early 80s. :joy:

Actually, their biggest hits, “Hey, Soul Sister” and “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” are from the Aughts. And I’m partial to “Drive By” which is from the 2010’s. I’ve always said Pat Monahan is underrated. Hopefully @1214mom won’t rob me of that illusion.

Even more reason why I’ve never heard of them. If they came on the music scene after Billy Joel, I probably don’t know them.

Earlier in the night we’d seen their concert, and it was one of my favorite concerts ever. It was outside, I believe on Treasure Island, and the Bay Bridge was in the background. I could have been right against the stage, but we were maybe 15 feet back. My H and I have seen them at least twice since then, and they have become more polished as the years have gone by.
Hopefully the band members are all alive and well, and stay that way :).

I think I was at that same show. They have become one of my favorite bands. I’m seeing them again this summer.
