H updated our system because it’s “patch Tuesday,” and now there are constant ads popping up and diverting me from this forum. It’s really irritating. I’m hoping I can figure out a fix or may stop visiting.
It was never like this before the latest update.

Get Adblock.

Nothing’s going to change but you might consider posting on the Issues forum.

It’s not ads actually, it’s that I’m being redirected to other webpages (outside of College Confidential) when I click on parts of the webpage. This evening is the first time this has happened and it’s NOT something I enjoy. :(

Adblock doesn’t work for all ISPs.

Go to your programs and see if you’ve downloaded anything thats brand new (and suspect). Does any of the words on your screen turn up green? A while back I accidentally got a program that wasn’t exactly malware but certainly drove me nuts. I deleted it, got rid of its cookies from all the stupid sites it kept sending me to. What a mess.

Would this be a problem NOT attributed to CC but another program on your computer???

Yes, that’s a problem with the computer and not CC.

Sounds like a problem on your end. You might want to try malwarebytes or other free malware remover. Check for browser add ons and toolbars that you can find the name of and then you can google “How to Remove X”

You have malware installed on your computer.

The other day, I downloaded Adblock to my laptop. I didn’t pay good enough attention to “decline” all the crap it also wanted me to download. I had several new programs installed with the adblock install. I started getting even more ads! So I uninstalled all the new stuff except for one program which WOULD NOT UNINSTALL. That really infuriated me. It took me two days to figure out how to get it off my laptop (had to install Norton Power Eraser, which identified the program as potential malware and removed it).

Whenever you download a new program, pay special attention to any checked boxes it asks you to “accept.” I just assumed they were TOS boxes, but they were actually additional programs. :-L

You guys are right. That computer has a problem, as this iPad mini doesn’t have the issue. Dang! Will try installing malwarebytes or similar.

Im having problems with getting logged out still.
Practically every time I look on the iphone, not quite as much on the ipad.
No problems with ads, although I still get the error message on the left corner of the screen.

OP, see if “wedownload” program was recently installed on your computer. That’s the malware which was causing all my problems.

OK, have installed Malwarebytes onto the computer and am going to run a scan. I couldn’t find the wedownload program, but perhaps it’s hidden somewhere in the computer and making itself difficult to find. Am running a malware scan now. I think H took off the malwarebytes program that had been on my computer when he upgraded me to WIndows 8.1, so thereby lost the protection. The iPad mini thankfully hasn’t had these issues. I feel so fortunate to have alternate ways to waste time. :)

Thanks everyone! I realized it was a problem with my computer when another site I visited was also redirecting me and having annoying ads pop up which didn’t used to happen on that site either.

YIPPEE! Have run the scan, deleted the Malware, and now have a “clean” computer. <phew> You don’t realize how annoying the pop ups and re-directs can be until you are plagued by them and happily able to delete them! </phew>

For me, it was a good idea to use the CNET certified version of Malwarebytes, so that it didn’t have additional bad programs included. I am so glad it was available for FREE–my favorite software price!

H suggested ninite.com as a good place to start off for installation of software. It will answer questions the correct way to prevent you from getting unwanted bloat and junk on your computer WITH whatever you are trying to install. Our kids taught him about it. ;)
