Most overrated bands / underrrated bands

Overrated:

List the bands you think are the most overrated, and give the reason you think that. Just because you don’t like them is not a reason. And, you might like a band and still think they’re overrated.

The Ramones - No, they did NOT start punk rock! And their music was crap. There were plenty of REAL punk bands who actually could play.

Nirvana - I like them, but to say that they ‘redefined rock music’ is just plain ludicrous. There was nothing special about them. Good band, but they did NOT redefine rock music. They just happened to hit at the right time. It was a just a marketing ploy to shift the fans away from the hair bands.

Marilyn Manson - he didn’t really do much that hadn’t already been done before. He’s really just a caricature.

My Chemical Romance - Can someone please explain this to me?

OK, that’s my list. Now for the UNDERRATED:

Peter Gabriel - People often write him off just because he had some hits in the 80s. Actually, he is a VERY deep musician. Check out ‘Plays Live’ (do NOT get ‘Highlights’ or you’ll miss the best song.) or ‘Secret World Live’ or ‘Up.’ Better yet, dig deep to the early Genesis days (NOT to be confused with the later Collins-era pop). Check out ‘Genesis Live’ and ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.’ Peter was the original GOTH, the FIRST to use a growly voice, and one of the very FIRST to stagedive and crowdsurf, way back in the early 70s! Most importantly, he can reach down into the depths of your soul and pull out deep emotion, then lift it up, like no one else! His voice is the most emotionally evocative of any singer, imo. Check out these pix to get an idea:

Sonata Arctica - dualing guitar and keyboards, one of the best voices in rock, power metal, high-energy…check these guys out!

Overrated: Fall Out Boy

oops, need to add to my UNDERRATED list:

Blue Oyster Cult - their EARLY albums ONLY - they got all soft and pop in their old age, but their first 4 albums kicked a**! Check out ‘Tyranny and Mutation,’ ‘Secret Treaties,’ ‘On Your Feet or On Your Knees’ (live). Just good hard rock, but wow, great stuff.

I too dislike Marilyn Manson–for all his anti-mainstream talk, his music sounds so pop (minus the words)…Snore.

I think Alice in Chains is good but they’re not particularly underrated–though they are when you compare them to the reputation Nirvana has got.

I agree on Peter Gabriel and Sonata Arctica–though are they really underrated?

My Chemical Romance has only recently become very popular. Their music is good, but it’s not like they’re the **** everywhere. They really only get respect on alt. rock stations and Fuse, so I wouldn’t call them overrated.

overrated:

Arctic Monkeys: often labeled as the best band to come out of UK. uh, no.

Gorillaz: enough said.

Killers: while they do occasionally have a hot record, they’re too ‘hit or miss’ for my liking

99% of the mainstream crap that gets played on the radio(AAR, Jet, FOB, The Fray, etc.)

underrated:

Camera Obscura

The Raconteurs

Better Than Ezra (hah don’t ask)

Spoon (their songwriting is arguably the best of any band)

Overrated:

Nirvana - Good music, but the words are nothing but a bunch screaming IMO.

Fall Out Boy and Most Current Rock Bands - They get too much praise. While some of their music is catchy, it hardly comapres to the classic rock of years past.

Any kind of rap music - Mostly because I don’t like it. I just don’t think rhyming curse words takes that much talent. If you think about it, is there really that much of a difference between 50-Cent and Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” when it comes to rapping. Rap supports call me crazy, but they’re both just spewing out random words that rhyme IMO. Neither is doing any kind of singing.

Led Zepplin - When I say this, classic rocks fans think I’m nuts. Besides “Stairway to Heaven” which is a fantastic song, the rest of Zepplin’s music doesn’t appeal to me. Most of it is too metal for my liking.

Underrated:

Jethro Tull - Some great use of the Piccolo that is unlike any other band. Locomotive Breath and Aqualung are 2 really good songs that you don’t hear enough.

5 for Fighting - One of the few “underrated” bands of today. They have their own, unqiue sound that I like, as well mas some good songs.

Overrated: Rolling Stones. I’m sorry, I know…I agree with Nirvana as well, and I like them (well, did like them).

Underrated: STEELY DAN!!! And Roxy Music. Hardly anyone I know knows Roxy, which is very strange to me.

Ah, some obscurity there, with Roxy Music. They got quite the acknowlegement in the avant-garde/prog world; just not mainstream. So then are you a fan of Eno?

Well Sonata Arctica is quite huge in Europe. I guess they just haven’t made it over here yet. We saw them in a tiny club a few months ago. Their new dvd is awesome - they are in a huge venue and in their element.

Peter - among his hardcore fans, we consider him The Master: Greatest lyricist/vocalist/composer of all time. But in the mainstream world I wish people would recognize his depth and not just fixate on ‘Shock the Monkey’ and ‘Sledgehammer.’ (Great songs, but not representative of his vast body of work!) I also wish mags like Kerrang! would give him credit for being the first Goth. (Well I don’t really count Alice Cooper as Goth.)

dude i hate the arctic monkeys

Underrated:

–Kit Armstrong. He is an absolutely BRILLIANT pianist and nobody has heard of him. He composed at age six. But maybe he doesn’t get defined as a band.

Underrated: Paramore - chick bands (that are good) need loving too.

I should have named the thread 'under/over -rated artists/bands. I listed Peter Gabriel. Any band or singer/musician.

You are nuts! :)

Overrated:

 • Beatles
 • Metallica

Underrated:

 • Tri Yann
 • Depeche Mode

"Overrated:

 • Beatles"

No, you’re nuts! The Beatles paved the way for music as we know it. They opened the doors of classic rock through which all other bands followed. Zepplin isn’t even close to the Fab 4.

"Underrated:

 • Depeche Mode"

This I have to agree with. I actually forgot to put them down as one of my underrated bands, which shows how underrated they are. “People are People” and “Enjoy the Silence” are my favorite Depeche Mode songs. They have a great sound to their music.

Overrated:
–Fall Out Boy and most similar bands
–All American Rejects
–Jack Johnson (good, but way overrated nowadays)

Underated
–Paolo Nutini <333
–Augustana <333

If you were to compare the Beatles’ music with the music that came later, then yeah, they wouldn’t be that impressive. But keep in mind that such music did NOT exist before they did it. They did a lot of innovative things that had never been done before.

Metallica: I think Metallica is awesome. But I can see why someone would think they’re overrated. There were LOTS of heavy bands in the late 70s that never made it big. Metallica just got lucky and got promoted well so they made it big. But there were other bands that were just as good that never made it.

“If you were to compare the Beatles’ music with the music that came later, then yeah, they wouldn’t be that impressive.”

No, it’s still impressive. I have never seen a band that has such a large following some many years later. Their #1 hits album was released over 30 years after their last record, yet it still was the top selling CD of the year. Sure, there are bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin with their own cult followings, but most of the kids I know like the Beatles and their music. Even the people who don’t listen to them appreciate what they did, which was revolutionize music and American culture as we know it. To call them overrated borders on insanity.

Overrated:
Dispatch- I don’t know if they’re as massively popular as they are at my school, but EVERYONE I know is obsessed with them… and I have to get this out, because I could never say this to my Dispatch-loving friends, but… they’re NOT that good. So, they’re pacifists or something. Wow, great, now you’re ‘politically-active’ and ‘free-thinking.’ Yayyyy.
The Fray- Aggghhh. I just hate their stupid songs. How To Save A Life, yeah, sure. How to Make Me Commit Suicide, more like it. (as you can see, I hold some VERY strong opinions in regards to modern music… and I actually had to delete several comments that were perhaps a little TOO critical)

Underrated:
The National- Their songs aren’t obviously innovative or catchy, but… wowie wowza. Once it clicks, you’ll play “Alligator” twenty billion times in a row. Maybe even twenty-one billion =).
Metric- As close as you’ll get to edgy, intellectual, inventive POP. ‘Succexy’ and ‘Wet Blanket’ = awesomosity.
