Most overrated bands / underrrated bands

To lealdragon - yes I DO like Brian Eno! Although I like his earlier stuff the best, especially Here Come the Warm Jets.

Someone said the Killers were overrated. I think the complete opposite. Have you actually listened to their entire records? I think nearly all of their songs are immensely enjoyable.

I might get many fierce responses to this, but I think Brand New is underrated.

Oh wow, an Eno fan! Not too many of those! Are you college age or a parent? Because it’s impressive either way, but even more impressive if you’re college-age. Yes, I meant his vocal stuff, not the ambient stuff. (Ambient stuff is ok…for airports and elevators…) Do you have his new album? (first vocal after 20+ years.) If so, how is it? I hadn’t gotten it yet.

hepstar: I don’t think the Beatles are overrated at all. And I agree with your statement completely. But I can understand if someone listens to them and thinks ‘yeah, so?’ and they need to be taken in the proper context. And, you are referring to their record sales and I was referring to their MUSIC.

I detest the Killers. Not that their music itself is bad, it’s just generic rock. But their lead singer, Brandon Flowers, is a *ing *. He’s such a vain-glorious mother*er.

“I just think it’s the whipped cream… on top. The Killers are the pie and I guess [my] looks are the cherry.”

He once criticized emo music (for once he was right)… and took it back! What a spinless twit.

Overrated:

Coldplay = boring.
A lot of other music, but mainly Coldplay.

And to whoever said the Beatles were overrated: blasphemy!

Have you listened to their songs thoroughly or just the “1” album?

Everything just fits; their timing is absolutely brilliant. They’re geniuses.

Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Taking Back Sunday, All American Rejects, 30 seconds to mars, My Chemical Romance

I had the displeasure to see Panic and Taking Back Sunday at a festival. Oh gosh, it was horrible.

Underated:
Matt Costa
Pepper
SOJA
Stars
Iron and Wine
Pinback
Snow Patrol
Sublime (even though they are immensely popular, they will never get enough credit)

Overrated:
Gwen Stefani
John Mayer
Bob Marley

I certainly concur.

All the disgusting rap music is way overrated.

DMB, Jack Johnson, and Guster are definitely underrated.

Underrated?

Porcupine Tree

I agree with porcupine tree.

The Killers are far from generic rock. Their music is great because it does not sound like generic rock. If you haven’t, please listen to the parts of their album that is NOT broadcast on the radio all the time before you pass judgement.

Too late for the pass judgement thing. I have listened to their stuff, and it’s ho-hum. Not bad, just OK. They try to pull of some interesting things, and mostly fail. I’ll give 'em some credit for trying. They sort of sound like Springsteen at some points.

I don’t listen to the radio often.

lealdragon- I actually won’t be starting college untill this fall. I got into Roxy Music the summer before my freshman year too, and Eno soon followed. My 18 year old anachronistic friends got me very far.

Very impressive! Are you a Peter Gabriel fan too? If not, check him out. He’s good friends with Brian and they have worked together. He’s also worked with Fripp (who, as I’m sure you well know, did that awesome guitar solo on “Baby’s On Fire”), and Tony Levin has been playing in his band for 20 years. They’re all part of the same clique musically. Eno is brilliant but he went off in that ambient direction. Peter, otoh, has remained fresh, sufficiently dark and eccentric, and exciting all the way.

I think Muse is underrated

Nirvana, Radiohead, Coldplay are overrated. Soundgarden, Sepultura is underrated. So is Chris Cornell’s solo album.

"And to whoever said the Beatles were overrated: blasphemy!”

Agreed

“Everything just fits; their timing is absolutely brilliant. They’re geniuses.”

I concur again. For people who listen to their music and say “so what,” you must be tone deaf. Their lyrics are amazing, drug-induced or not. I mean what other band could have written such as great song about being a walrus (I am a Walrus) or being high on drugs (Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds). Even the music is very good. While none of them are known as a master at a particular instrument like Hendrix/Clapton is with the guitar, the music was still very good and very original. Their songs had everything from harps to the sitar, 2 instruments you very often don’t associate with rock bands while also using the more traditional, guitar/piano/drum type instruments. One has to admit, the Beatles had their own style and sound and were the first band of its kind.

Oasis aren’t as popular as they should be in America. Granted, the Gallaghers are arrogant pricks sometimes, but they’re definitely an awesome band that more people should give a listen beyond Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova.

overrated:

-the beatles-too poppy for me
-led zeplin- their lead singers voice makes me cringe. gawd damn.
-the who- there decent, but not the best band ever.

underrated:

-Black Sabbath-the original heavy metal.
-Allman Brothers Band- not the best in their genre, but they were the 1st.
-The Verve- the bittersweet symphony

“-the who- there decent, but not the best band ever.”

Again, more madness. The Who are freaking awesome. If anything, they’re underrated, often being overlooked by the Rolling Stones/Led Zepplin crowd. You should listen to “Love, Reign O’er Me,” one of the less talked about Who songs. I think it is their best. The music is incredible and it gives me chills up my spine when I listen to it. That parricular song is VERY underrated.

One former music industry exec did a “battle of the worst rock bands” in a “March Madness” format - with the criteria being that the bands had to have had a certain level of commercial success.

The worst band ever…?

Bon Jovi (I have to agree.)
