Overrated:

Snow Patrol: They’re working the same beautiful formula acts like James Blunt and Coldplay tend to work. It’s beautiful, but it’s still a formula. Fey-voiced singer-songwriters with existentialist leanings = air play. We’ve seen this.

Fall Out Boy: I don’t get the hype about them, especially their mushmouthed lead singer. I barely understand the lyrics to “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and don’t even get me started on “This Ain’t A Scene…”, though I like the latter. I don’t see what the big deal is.

Nirvana: Ehhhh, I will agree with some others that they were overrated. From a lyrical standpoint, Kurt Cobain was a good writer, and he was a decent singer (even though I’d say he had that vocal quality because he did sundry narcotics and smoked cigarettes). However, the music quality was a little too clack-clack-bang-bang for my tastes. Had Kurt been a singer-songwriter, I’d say he would’ve been interesting. But Nirvana as a grunge outfit? Eh.

Daughtry: Chris Daughtry was alright on AI. He could hold his own on a show like AI because he’d been singing and performing for years. And he does have a good, even voice for radio. But dude, Daughtry’s album sold a million copies in five weeks. When he’s really just a pastiche of, like, Fuel, Shinedown, Creed, and Nickelback. Chris is a more appealing singer on the upswing than most of today’s post-grunge acts because his instincts as a singer aren’t entirely rock. There’s some pop. There’s some folk. There’s a bit of soul…somewhere in there. He’s still very formulaic.

On-their-way-to-becoming-overrated:

P!ATD: “I Write Sins…” was a decent pop song, and I guess the emo crowd finds Brenden Uriewhatshisface appealing, buuuuut…Video of the Year? Huh? I don’t think so. He can’t sing that well live and he has a weird vibrato situation.

John Mayer: Sensitive singer-songwriter was appealing when he did “Why, Georgia” and grating when he was singing songs like “Your Body is a Wonderland”, but now that he’s turned into serious, singer-songwriter/jam band guy he’s…not that fun to watch or listen to anymore. The guy can sing…weird tone aside. But we’ve got one Dave Matthews…we don’t need another one.
