Most overrated bands / underrrated bands

^ Heck no! I love my Bon Jovi!

Heh, then again, being from Jersey, I kinda have to love him.

Overrated? I’d say Hendrix, if it’s music that we’re talking about – he does have cool guitar parts though.
Underrated? I don’t know. Muse? I actually think they’re just fine the way they are in the UK (<3s <3s everywhere), but maybe a bit in the US.

Radiohead is GENIUS!!!

I have to admit it took me awhile to ‘get it’ but once I did, I became a radiohead-head.

Once you click with them, you’ll understand. They’re like a cross between Pink Floyd and Eno. Brilliant!

Definitely the Who’s best song! A masterpiece! Ah, back when Roger could SING…and before Peter took over the vox…

Sabbath is not underrated. Everyone knows they invented heavy metal. They have most definitely gotten their due acclaim. If anything, they have gotten ALL the credit for inventing heavy metal, when Deep Purple, Bloodrock, and others never got any credit at all.

I completely agree, leal. Nothing over-hyped about Radiohead, they kick ass; majorly. I had the same problem in regards to the “clicking” thing. I’m glad I listened to the Bends before Kid A or Amneisac, I probably would have been turned off prematurely. Damn, Kid A is a grower. My favorite album of all time.

I don’t care for Oasis. Soundgarden blows. Muse is pretty over the top and fun.

Underrated:

Paris Hilton
Ashlee Simpson
Britney Spears

Soundgarden doesn’t blow, you blow.

for ****'s sake, if you are going to write the name of the band, write it correct…Hepstar too…it’s LED ZEPPELIN…and if you call Zeppelin, The Who and the Beatles overrated…you ppl must be out of your mind or high or something like that…

“for ****'s sake, if you are going to write the name of the band, write it correct…Hepstar too…it’s LED ZEPPELIN…and if you call Zeppelin, The Who and the Beatles overrated…you ppl must be out of your mind or high or something like that…”

Who died and made you the spelling police? “Zeppelin” is overrated IMO because besides “Stairway to Heaven” (which is an awesome song), all their other stuff isn’t that outstanding.

“write it correct”

It’s CORRECTLY, not correct. Just had to do it ;).

“Definitely the Who’s best song! A masterpiece! Ah, back when Roger could SING…and before Peter took over the vox…”

Yes! I’m not the only one who sees the greatness of “Love Reign O’er Me.” Whenever great Who songs are discussed, you always hear songs like “Who are You” and “Baba O’Riley” mentioned (CSI anyone?). “Love Reign O’er Me” certainly doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. The Who as a band may not be underrated, but that particular song is.

I may or may not blow, but Soundgarden fooooshooooo blows.

Do you really like black hole sun?

Blaaaaaaack holeee suuuuun, won’t you cooooooooooooome, and da dada da daaaaaa

“Wash away the rain”, I think it goes.

I’m pretty sure there’s some theorem that states that rain can’t be washed away; it can only be the washing agent. And the black hole sun part muddles it even more. Oh well.

Overrated:

Snow Patrol: They’re working the same beautiful formula acts like James Blunt and Coldplay tend to work. It’s beautiful, but it’s still a formula. Fey-voiced singer-songwriters with existentialist leanings = air play. We’ve seen this.

Fall Out Boy: I don’t get the hype about them, especially their mushmouthed lead singer. I barely understand the lyrics to “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and don’t even get me started on “This Ain’t A Scene…”, though I like the latter. I don’t see what the big deal is.

Nirvana: Ehhhh, I will agree with some others that they were overrated. From a lyrical standpoint, Kurt Cobain was a good writer, and he was a decent singer (even though I’d say he had that vocal quality because he did sundry narcotics and smoked cigarettes). However, the music quality was a little too clack-clack-bang-bang for my tastes. Had Kurt been a singer-songwriter, I’d say he would’ve been interesting. But Nirvana as a grunge outfit? Eh.

Daughtry: Chris Daughtry was alright on AI. He could hold his own on a show like AI because he’d been singing and performing for years. And he does have a good, even voice for radio. But dude, Daughtry’s album sold a million copies in five weeks. When he’s really just a pastiche of, like, Fuel, Shinedown, Creed, and Nickelback. Chris is a more appealing singer on the upswing than most of today’s post-grunge acts because his instincts as a singer aren’t entirely rock. There’s some pop. There’s some folk. There’s a bit of soul…somewhere in there. He’s still very formulaic.

On-their-way-to-becoming-overrated:

P!ATD: “I Write Sins…” was a decent pop song, and I guess the emo crowd finds Brenden Uriewhatshisface appealing, buuuuut…Video of the Year? Huh? I don’t think so. He can’t sing that well live and he has a weird vibrato situation.

John Mayer: Sensitive singer-songwriter was appealing when he did “Why, Georgia” and grating when he was singing songs like “Your Body is a Wonderland”, but now that he’s turned into serious, singer-songwriter/jam band guy he’s…not that fun to watch or listen to anymore. The guy can sing…weird tone aside. But we’ve got one Dave Matthews…we don’t need another one.

Overrated: Led Zeppelin, John Mayer, The Eagles…some more I can’t think of.

“Overrated-Daughtry”

Interesting to chose an artist as new as Daughtry to call overrated. I personally think it is too early to make a judgement call on this one. As for him on Idol, I think he was the greatest thing that happened to the show (along with Bo Bice). Prior to them, the show discouraged rock music in favor of bubble-gum pop type singers who sing Whitney Houston or Stevie Wonder songs to death. Bice and Daughtry brought a new style to the show, opening the door for rockers. Although Bice deserves a lot of the credit because he came first, I think Daughtry is a much better singer and appealed to even those who don’t like rock music. I talked to some other people who watched AI last year, people who don’t listen to rock music. Many of these people thought Daughtry should have won and hat he was clearly the best.

Oh, and underrated:

Streetlight Manifesto- They haven’t done much lately, but they are the best ska band I’ve ever heard in my life and their lyrics are absolutely incredible.

Velvet Underground- One of the most overlooked classic rock bands.

Overrated: Arctic Monkeys. They’re good but Time said that they were the #1 band of 2006 or something like that…a little bit much.

Underrated, at least as far as alternative/punk rock bands go: Anberlin.

Hepstar, I agree completely about the Who, but disagree completely about the Mighty Zep. Zep was among the most innovative of all bands. I mean, think about it: Mystical, medieval heavy metal! Page was the most brilliant guitarist of all time, imo, and the band was so cohesive live that they could just jam for hours and every time they played a song, it was different. Their songs were dynamic. Robert’s voice had incredible range and he was one of the best vocalists in the world in terms of evoking intense emotion. I wore out all my Led Zep records and there is just nothing that can compare to them. They are just totally unique! But, having said that, it is a taste thing. Music is so subjective. I am surprised that you could love the Who but not Zep. That is strange to me, especially since Roger’s and Robert’s voices were actually somewhat similar. But, hey, Zep just might not be your style. That doesn’t make them ‘not outstanding.’ In every possible way - musically and lyrically and live - they were beyond outstanding. They’re right up there with the mighty Pink Floyd in terms of being totally unique. NO ONE sounds like Led Zeppelin (unless they are intentionally copying them).

This applies to The Who, Led Zep, Soundgarden, and any other band:

The hits played on the radio are rarely the band’s best songs (with the exception of Stairway to Heaven, of course, which is the #1 best song EVER recorded, imo). To hear their best songs you need to go to the deep cuts that never get played on the radio. The radio is ‘strictly commercial’ and no matter how great a song is, it gets nauseatingly old after you’ve heard it 5000 times. Sure, I’m tired of Black Hole Sun too, and it’s not even one of their better songs. Soundgarden had LOTS of great songs. I think it’s a mistake to judge a band by their hits. I’m always telling people to not judge Peter Gabriel by ‘Sledgehammer.’ Oh, he has SO much more great stuff!

I just don’t like grunge, so Soundgarden is kind of defaulted to ‘dislike’ in my brain.

I don’t dislike the Who, but they’re not great in my opinion. I really like Behind Blues Eyes, though. It’s just massively over-the-top and awesome.

“Zep was among the most innovative of all bands. I mean, think about it: Mystical, medieval heavy metal!”

Which is probably why I don’t like them. I am not a big metal person. I like rock, but most metal is too over-the-top IMO. They are more metal than the Who and I personally think Daltrey has a much better voice than Robert. “Stairway to Heaven” is one of my all-time favorite songs. If you think about it, it really isn’t like another Zeppelin song, which is why I like it so much. I will agree than no one sound like Zep. However, I am not a huge fan of their metal-type sound.

“Page was the most brilliant guitarist of all time.”

I have to disagree here. I’d pick Clapton. However, the best guitar in any song is one of the Allman brothers (I believe it’s Duane) in Layla IMO. It is amazing and truly one-of-a-kind, especially the slide guitar.

Ah, that explains everything. It’s just a matter of taste preferences. I think Clapton and Page are so very different they really can’t be compared. Different styles.

Overrated:

50 cent. (Someone kill him already)
