Most overrated bands / underrrated bands

Hepstar, I agree completely about the Who, but disagree completely about the Mighty Zep. Zep was among the most innovative of all bands. I mean, think about it: Mystical, medieval heavy metal! Page was the most brilliant guitarist of all time, imo, and the band was so cohesive live that they could just jam for hours and every time they played a song, it was different. Their songs were dynamic. Robert’s voice had incredible range and he was one of the best vocalists in the world in terms of evoking intense emotion. I wore out all my Led Zep records and there is just nothing that can compare to them. They are just totally unique! But, having said that, it is a taste thing. Music is so subjective. I am surprised that you could love the Who but not Zep. That is strange to me, especially since Roger’s and Robert’s voices were actually somewhat similar. But, hey, Zep just might not be your style. That doesn’t make them ‘not outstanding.’ In every possible way - musically and lyrically and live - they were beyond outstanding. They’re right up there with the mighty Pink Floyd in terms of being totally unique. NO ONE sounds like Led Zeppelin (unless they are intentionally copying them).

This applies to The Who, Led Zep, Soundgarden, and any other band:

The hits played on the radio are rarely the band’s best songs (with the exception of Stairway to Heaven, of course, which is the #1 best song EVER recorded, imo). To hear their best songs you need to go to the deep cuts that never get played on the radio. The radio is ‘strictly commercial’ and no matter how great a song is, it gets nauseatingly old after you’ve heard it 5000 times. Sure, I’m tired of Black Hole Sun too, and it’s not even one of their better songs. Soundgarden had LOTS of great songs. I think it’s a mistake to judge a band by their hits. I’m always telling people to not judge Peter Gabriel by ‘Sledgehammer.’ Oh, he has SO much more great stuff!
