Most overrated/underrated colleges in the nation

University of Chicago, at least to the general public.

Yeah BrownBear1 you truely are being immature especially when you constantly keep picking on BC. you have posted over 7 posts about how BC is overrated. Were you rejected from there or something?

House of london will you relax. BC is overrated and thats my opinion deal with it.

I think TCNJ is very underrated.

I think gtown is not really underrated primarily because they do not have engineering school, science departments are too weak to be compared to other top-notch shools. They don’t have many nobel prize winning professors, facilities are old and crappy etc. However, I do believe that MAYBE, their humanity and social science departments are not necessarily #23 in the nation. (Not to mention that SFS is superb)

 • Well, I’m an international student, and gtown is very well recognized internationally, but anyway, overall, #23 seems fine.

And WUSTL, maybe it is not #12 school, I’d say it’s more like #16-18… don’t really think it deserves higher ranking than Cornell, Brown, JHU. But in terms of prestige, WUSTL is definitely underrated.

I wouldn’t even go that far. Georgetown is as overrated for academic strength as Berkeley is underrated. That said, it’s still a good school with great placement records for graduating students.

^ Georgetown has very few top programs. However, as an overall undergraduate institution, it does deliver. The sheer number of famous faculty in the DC area who can give students that hands-on knowledge, rather than textbook knowledge, is not readily available at so many other schools of this nature.

What is remarkable about Georgetown is its name recognition and academic prestige in spite of its relative lack of remarkable academic programs. Its good placement in top graduate programs further displays this odd Georgetown phenomenon. I would venture to say that Georgetown does indeed deserve to be placed higher than schools like Emory, Vanderbilty, and Notre Dame, just as Berkeley, Virginia, and Michigan do.

From what I’ve searched, Georgetown is a very peculiar school. Like Hope2getrice said, it does not have many top programs, but tend to attract a lot of excellent students mainly because of its location in DC and prestige. (I mean, some people choose gtown over UChicago or Duke)
Acceptance rate is comparatively lower than other schools even though it does not use commonapp, and yield rate is also high.

Personally, I turned down gtown mainly because I did not think it’s academically strong enough but had a really hard time because I did not know which one to believe btw USNWR ranking and its prestige among ppl.

I think UChicago is very underrated (to the general public and on CC) and Gtown is very overrated… I also think Harvard undergrad is very overrated. (Grad is a totally different story)

I think TCNJ is vastly overrated. It’s a scam.

^ i think, in some ways, it is similar to Brown and Dartmouth. Both schools have not so many highly ranked programs and are lower in Peer Evaluation scores than other schools, but still manage to attract great student bodies and have prestige to those in-the-know.
As undergraduate schools, I think the word has been out for a while (as all three are fairly old) that they deliver good academics and the word is something that just doesn’t die despite NRC, USNWR, etc rankings, and perhaps, that is a good thing because, honestly, there is no perfect ranking system.

TCNJ overrated? No.

Could someone tell me what “BC” means, is it Brown University, British Columbia, or what?

Thanks.

BC stands for Boston College. Ignorance is not bliss.

Okay thanks.

Some schools are both overrated and underrated.

They may be overrated by their boosters, underrated by others who may not even know that they exist.

Or they may be overrated in some subjects, but underrated in others.
