Mother of the Bride - November wedding

You all are so helpful to those of us that are not fashionista’s, I’m hoping you can steer me in the right direction. My daughter is getting married around Thanksgiving. Colors are black (bridesmaids) and white (daughter!). I look good in fall colors and like rusty red’s. I have a yellow undertone so some greens and any yellow shades are bad. I’m petite - about 5 ft and slightly overweight. I normally wear a six petite. I’m not a fan of dresses or heels but realize that’s what I will be wearing - short heels, MUST be comfortable. As to the dress, I tend to get cold easily so would like something that isn’t so skimpy that I’m wearing my wrap all night. I’m thinking of a hem length just below or above the knee. I would not like to spend more than $200.

Is the wedding formal or more casual? What shape is your body – where do you carry weight? Do you always wear petite sizes or can you wear a regular 6 if it’s shortened?

Here are a couple of dresses that come in petite:

That Tahari dress is really pretty and looks more expensive than it is. It looks like it would flatter a lot of body types.

I second what @Gourmetmom asked-what kind of wedding is it? Formal, semiformal, beach? Morning, day, evening? In a church, in a hotel? What does your daughter’s dress look like? (you can give us the designer and style # and I can link to a picture of it). Will the guys be in tuxes or suits?

Lots more info needed before I can steer you right.

Also, what is your daughter saying she wants you in?

I like the navy and the apricot - this MOB is lucky that the bridesmaids are wearing black…she can wear pretty much any color she likes without worrying about clashing.

Semi-formal wedding. I carry my weight in my stomach and butt. I pretty much just wear petites. I am short waisted, short across my shoulders and regular shirts usually cover my hands and the length of them is usually too long. I’m not the only one that doesn’t have a dress! Daughter JUST nailed down a date and we’re signing the contract this weekend for the reception. Wedding in a church, not over the top decorating. I think I look pretty good in wrap dresses and I like them more than form fitting. Wedding is in the area between Philadelphia and NYC, but a small town. It has snowed at that time of year before. I think we’ll put the guys in tuxes just because I doubt they all have black suits.

I like this burgundy (really, more merlot, lol) knee length dress with a wrap top:

Lord & Taylor has a good petite section. This is a beautiful graphite gray wrap style:

Here’s a similar one in navy:

Both styles work well if you’re not wanting something tight across your stomach-the sparkle is all in the waist/bust area.

My mother in law recently wore this one to her daughter’s wedding and it looked lovely on her (she picked the mauve color):

It’s pricier than what you may be looking at, but overstock carries them as well as Dillards, and they do go on sale. Lovely dresses and VERY flattering to all shapes.

^^^I like the black tie/sash with the bridesmaids’ black dresses.

I like the red and black one @Gourmetmom and the the soulmates one @MotherOfDragons.It was fun making the soulmates one red and mid calf! http://soulmatesdress.com/collections/red/mid-length I think both of those styles would look pretty good on me. The snowybridal one is not my style at all. But, neither of the ones I like look like they come in petite and I hate to be picky, but how do you stay warm in something that is essentially sleeveless?

^^I know; it’s like build your own dress  .

I just wear a cashmere wrap when I’m outdoors and I’m dressed up. Plus, I try not to be out in the cold too much when I’m going out-mad dash from car to venue! A room full of people will warm up fast.

@Gourmetmom I like the shape of that red and black one but I have issue with fire engine red being worn at weddings-traditionally it said “I don’t approve of this wedding” and now it says “look at MEEEEE!!!”

Unless it’s an Indian wedding, then that’s cool.

Walkinghome, Matchesfashion has that DVF dress in 8!!! Quick, get it. DVF runs small, so 8 will be good for someone size 6. Free ship, duties included, and free returns (I shop that store):

I like that DVF styled the red lace dress with sheer black hose!

Here is a red DVF in lace for $200:

@MotherOfDragons The bridesmaids are wearing black, and that used to be a no-no as well. OP said that she looks good in red, so it’s an option. It’s a semiformal wedding and will look great with the bridesmaids’ dresses…I also think the black underlay mitigates the red “look at me” vibe.

I also think the ¾ sleeve will work well with the OP, who said she has short arms, and the length is a bit short on the model, so again, may be fine for the OP.

If you like it, I’d order and try it on…you can always return it.

eeeehhhh, but it’s also lace and it’s also transparent. It’s just a LOT going on. She might get some raised eyebrows. If it were burgundy it’d be fine, if it weren’t lace it’d probably be fine, it’s just all three of those elements together just reads not appropriate for a wedding to me.

The sleeves are sheer, the rest has an underlay…it’s completely appropriate. I’d wear it, but what do I know?

DMV is cut quite modestly, and is usually flattering and fits well, which is huge.

Ah, I had not heard about not wearing red. Does a rust red count as red? Do you think that the colors on these sites are the colors they are because they’re for Spring and summer weddings? I really look washed out in gray and navy.

Adrianna Papel has pretty dresses. You can usually find them at Macy’s , Bloomingdales .
