With our son living in a different area for much of the last 10 years, we’ve enjoyed traveling one way or the other for a visit for Mother’s Day weekend. One highlight has always been a nice brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas.
This year we will both arrange to pick up breakfast to go, then each come home and video brunch together. We are coordinating pick up times because the trip home should take us both the same amount of time. Our restaurant can give us a mimosa kit but it’s not the same. We haven’t seen son in person since Thanksgiving so it’s tough.
Both of our mothers are gone so no planning “up”. Actually, the last time I saw each of my parents was on a Mother’s Day, many years apart, so somewhat bittersweet.
We have a zoom meeting planned with both of our daughters. We don’t usually see each other on Mother’s Day so this should be nice. My mother is gone and we sent a framed photo to my mother in law and will be calling her. She also lives out of state so it is sort of like a normal Mother’s Day for us.
I almost feel guilty - all three of our adult children are here (it’s been over six weeks now). I have to admit, I told DH directly I expect him and the kids to make it a nice day for me (I’m beyond the point where I have the energy to hint around). So they are going to make dinner for me and we’re all going to play games. This could literally be the last time they are all here on Mother’s Day, since middle kid is moving overseas and I don’t think he will live in the US permanently again. I will soak up every minute!
The morning should be great - breakfast, games (or maybe a livestreamed church service), then lunch with two of my three lads, one DIL, and H.
Then youngest son and DIL are heading to my FIL’s place for 3 days to help him repair a seawall (camp along a river where he’s hanging out/hiding from Covid). They all have been social distancing and no stop is necessary between the places, so it should be fine.
At that point I’m allowing myself to mourn my first Mother’s Day without my mom. H is having his first without his mom too. Giving myself a specific time when I can mourn will help me enjoy the first part (I think - time will tell).
My daughters already sent me my gift, two bottles of Grand Marnier. (Both live very far away.) My supply was very low, ? and in my state, the liquor stores closed when we sheltered in place. Now I have something to drink for my Zoom happy hours. ?
I sent cookies and a card to my mother. Also sent a card to my MIL, who is in assisted living. We’ll call both of them tomorrow.
My daughter sent cards to both her grandmothers. She went to the Starbucks drive through today and brought me a caramel macchiato. She said, “Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you aren’t expecting anything else, because you know I haven’t left the house in weeks!”.
Not real plans at all. I’ll likely FaceTime with my mom. Didn’t get her a card but will send her a digital one. S will likely call - if he remembers it’s Mother’s Day. We’ve never made a big deal about it.
Hugs to you @Creekland and your H. A bittersweet day for sure.
My grandfather died on Fathers Day and we were all at my Aunt’s house for a cookout, waiting for him to come after playing golf and cards at the CC. Fathers Day was always difficult after that - especially for my mom. And even though I was only 8 it still makes me a wee bit sad.
Doing a 20 minute scheduled “window visit” at my mother’s assisted living. She keeps calling me and asking if I am coming to Easter Dinner. She has dementia. At least she know something is up!
My D decided to come home for a long weekend. I’m very happy!! We have been waiting for this date. We are using this weekend to start our gradual re entry to society
@Marilyn, I haven’t seen my daughter since thanksgiving either, it’s a long time.
It will be a weird Mother’s Day that’s for sure.
I’m sure both of the kids will call. I talked to my mom Friday, I’ll probably call but it’s hard, I literally have nothing going on.
The weather is going to be a high of 40 with a chance of snow. Makes thIs weird year, even weirder!
If I wanted, we could do a FaceTime call but since my hair looks terrible, I’m not in the mood honestly.
The husband said he would take me golfing, but I’m not going to golf in 40 and snow lol!
My mil really wanted to visit but my fil said it was too early to do that. I have the feeling based on how busy all of the grocery stores have looked, that I think a lot of families are going to gather this year.
Sorry this wasn’t very upbeat, not feeling very upbeat about Mother’s Day this year
One of my sons and his GF are here (mostly to visit our new kitty, but I’ll take it). We all quarantined before the visit, so we’re comfortable. We had a nice carry out dinner, will have some kind of breakfast here in the morning, and then my husband will drive them back to their place. My other son barely talks to me, so likely won’t hear from him.
I’m sure I’ll get phone calls from my sons, maybe a videochat with S1 and GD. DH will do his best to make it special. He’s been hiding delivered packages for a few days. Last year, S2 went out to lunch with us, but that won’t be possible this year.
This will be my 1st Mother’s Day since my mother died. I’m not sure how I’ll feel. She had severe dementia, so hadn’t been aware of Mother’s Day for the past couple of years.
Given all that, Mother’s Day won’t be quite the same this year.
DS1 and his fiancee sent me a present that arrived a week early. He apologized for the poor timing, but I didn’t care. It was awesome, and he was a little bit offended when he told me it was her idea, and I said, “Of course it was!” lol
Dh will make me breakfast in bed, and both boys will call, maybe together. Dh brought prosecco home from the grocery store, so yea!
Nothing planned and I’ll be making dinner. I’ll talk S into helping peel the potatoes. I’ll probably get a call from the son in Austin, and S at home made a Target run today, so I’m imagining something from him.
First Mother’s Day since my mom died, but we were estranged. So basically the 5th I haven’t celebrated with her. But she left the country without so much as a toodiloo, so there’s that. It’s strange though. My anger is pretty much gone now, and I just feel sad. Not guilt, just sad.
My husband is making French toast, eggs and bacon for breakfast (probably more like brunch by the time my kids wake up).
At some point, I’ll drive over to my parents and drop of the flowering plant and card I bought my mother. I’ll have to leave it on the porch. For dinner, we will have what was originally planned for tonight.
We had an unfortunate incident with one of our dogs today and will be euthanizing her on Monday so TBH, I’m not really expecting to have a good day tomorrow and would almost rather forget celebrating anything. It’s been a crappy week overall for a variety of reasons. Trying to look on bright side and be thankful our loved ones are all healthy.
It really doesn’t seem like a happy Mother’s Day. My youngest son has been SAH with us since the middle of March. I love having him here. We won’t see our other two kids and our 18 month old granddaughter which makes me sad. They live close by, but we’re still not taking any chances since we’re in hard hit Massachusetts with underlying conditions. We’ll do a Zoom call and I think there are some gifts involved. It will be as nice as it can be.
My S’s GF sent me a Mother’s Day card, which I thought was sweet (S seemed pleased that the card had arrived). This is the 1st Mother’s Day since 2006 that we are all here in my house in HI—both kids, H and me. I really don’t care about anything else—I’m happy and have been cherishing my kids being around so much.
The kids may cook, as they have been cooking quite a bit while they’ve been here. We shall see.
I got orchid for my 86 years old mom and will leave it on her doorstep tomorrow morning along with a cake my DD made for her. My mom is in self isolation in her home for almost two months now. My DD who is a college senior, my husband and I plan to drive to see wild flowers blooming. The place reopened yesterday. Then we plan to have a picnic somewhere in the area.
