Mother’s Day Plans

I have been receiving mother’s day presents through out the week from both daughters. They also sent presents to my mom. Tomorrow we are going to do facetime lunch with my mom - it will be both daughters, their SOs and and my mom. It going to be the first time I am not celebrating mother’s day with my mom in person. We all agreed to get dressed up and have a nice meal. D1 sent me a bottle of my favorite champagne.

My son has scheduled a family zoom get together (this is something he does every couple of weeks, so may not have been specifically MD related), which will be the real gift. DH came back from the garden center with a couple of house plants, apparently recalling my request 10-15 years ago for “not dead plants.” And there’s a bag shoved in the back of the bottom shelf of the fridge that I’m apparently not supposed to notice, so I assume cake is in the offing!

I never get presents; son doesn’t think of it and husband feels I’m not his mother. Many years I didn’t get a card from him. Which is why I always liked the bottomless mimosas. I do usually get some kind of flowers.

I told DH & DD they are off the hook this year, still DD insists on making cupcakes for me tomorrow because my favorite bakery is closed. So instead of getting one cupcake I am evidently going to get 24 of them.

I am trying to push that back a week or three, but she isn’t buying it. Her “Sweet 16 in Quarantine” is on Monday. She asked me to bake her brownies from scratch and make some homemade ice cream, which I did today. She shocked me yesterday and said she doesn’t want a cake for her birthday. That has never happened before. Cake is her favorite, but I think SIP has her feeling somewhat down. What she didn’t know is that I had already planned a zoom party and arranged for identical cakes to be shipped to each attendee, so they can all share “a piece of her birthday cake” together, but apart. oof… 24 cupcakes, brownies, ice cream, and then a cake for 8 being delivered… all for the three of us.

So unless I can talk her into delaying the cupcakes, what I will be doing on Mother’s Day is gaining a whole lot more weight and going into a sugar coma. ?

Assuming a big nada from H and that’s okay. He usually goes to a local wholesale florist and gets fancy flowers for both his mother and me. Not even sure is that florist open, but he’s high risk on several levels and staying home.

Local D does our grocery shopping, delivers on Sunday, and will also bring a Mother’s Day Lunch meal from a nearby place. We’ve been doing Sunday lunch takeout weekly supporting local restaurants, especially those that are also joining in the “Feed the Fight” effort.

Will Zoom with S & DIL later in the day.

DH is stepping up this year. I wanted to order some flowers from a local nursery with drive-through delivery. Instead he went out in the rain on Friday, sent me pics of what was available, and brought them home. I’d bought new planters for our front walkway/patio, and he said tomorrow he’ll load them with gravel and dirt. Usually I’m the one doing that. It’s supposed to go down to 34 degrees Monday and Tuesday nights, but hit 82 on Thursday, so will plant the flowers later in the week.

DH’s also cooking dinner. We’ll WhatsApp with our expat son, who we haven’t seen since August, and Google Hangout with our CA son. We’re all healthy and safe, so anything else is icing on the cake.

This weekend reminds me we’ll need to give my niece and nephew extra love as next month will be the first Father’s Day without their dad, and oh, is that complicated.

My H is of the same mind as a previous poster, I am not his mother haha and he has honestly been so spacey during this SIP that I don’t even think he knows it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow! But he usually brings me coffee in bed on Sundays so there’s that.

Normally we would go out to dinner and since that’s out, I ordered myself special Asian coconut filled doughnuts (masaladas?) and a mimosa kit from a Hawaiian restaurant south of the city in an area where the restaurants are hard+hit. The brunch items seemed expensive and not to the kids liking so I may cook or get Thai takeout, my favorite.

But I’m happy I ordered a special treat for myself, it feels festive. My 25 yo son lives out of state but has made it a point to be home the past 3 mother’s days, and he writes the best cards for me, but I’m not expecting anything this year with him not visiting.

Similar to others, I’m just glad everyone is healthy and I’m trying to enjoy the kids being home so much (I say trying only because they’ve lost so many opportunities because of the virus I can’t 100% enjoy it).

I asked my kids to surprise me, so will be curious what they choose to serve for dinner. I vetoed the chili they planned to order as takeout.

I’m with my D at her new apartment. We plan on hiking this morning before I go home. This is my first Mother’s Day without my mom. I’m happy to be with my D.

H is picking me up at the airport and making dinner. He got my favorite foods. I also told him no gifts this year because we just treated ourselves to a new tandem kayak and all that goes with it.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!!

I will run the Mother’s Day 4 miler here for the third year in a row. This time it’s virtual however.

At 2 PM we have a FaceTime planned with both kids. It’s been a few years since I had either of my kids with me on Mother’s Day.

The movers come tomorrow, so…
I’ll be spending my day packing up food, taking down window treatments, stripping beds, and just a litany of other small chores to get done before tomorrow. We’re heading to an Air BnB tonight for the next few days. The movers will take 3 days and then the real work of putting the new house together begins!

Mother’s day always made me feel self-conscious. Husband is ready to make some fun plans with us and the dogs, even if it’s staying home (my preference, honestly). Will probably hear from both out of state adult kids. We’re putting care packages together for both of them, so the contacts will likelier be “what do you want in your box” than much else.

I’m mostly happily building my own celebration here. Ordered myself a handbag marked down 30% yesterday. About to call my own mother. Tomorrow I’ll see if I can get myself some flowers. Maybe they’ll have day-after-holiday pricing – aka Feast of St. Markdown.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the best moms in the world. Have a great day.

Flowers were just delivered. It’s a good thing I was up and have sensitive ears, because I heard an unusual sound in the foyer, went to investigate, and saw flowers on the front porch. Because it’s in the 30s and very windy (think January weather) and the flowers had no plastic protection, they would have died quickly in that weather. I’m not sure how long they will last having been exposed for even a short time. They should at least ring the doorbell.

They are beautiful. Lots of pink roses, carnations and alstroemerias.

We started the day with no power, so my husband headed out for coffee and donuts. We don’t make a big deal of holidays other than cards and cake, but Mother’s Day has always been centered around my mom and MIL; lunch with one and dinner with the other, every single year. I use to joke, when did I get Mother’s Day? Well, this year I do as there is no one to celebrate with. My kids live out of state, but I did FT with the oldest GD this morning. Haven’t heard from my daughter yet; maybe as it is her first MD, her husband is letting her sleep in a bit.

I will take dinner to my mom later while picking up something for us. The sibling send a fancy dinner to my MIL with flowers yesterday and we all have a Zoom with her this afternoon. I thought about showering, and doing my hair for the first time in 2 months, but with no power, that isn’t happening! So I will still be without makeup and hair in a ponytail for the extended family Zoom.

Happy Mother’s Day to all.

We are low key on MD here in general. H’s mom has been gone for many years, and I lost mine last year. I will probably see the kids from a social distance. They both live nearby, since weather is better for standing around outside than it’s been lately. We generally don’t plan much, so I’m pretty laissez faire about it. Happy Mother’s Day to all!

I woke up to a Happy Mother’s Day text from D and we texted for a bit. She is great at remembering the special days and making me feel loved. S1 has officially been home but self-quarantined for two weeks today, so I’m planning to hug him later on. S2 is in the middle of finals but will probably text three words at some point after a reminder from a sibling.

Mom lives with us, but dementia prevents her from remembering much. We’ll probably do a family Zoom for her in the evening.

I may pull out the old home movies and relive the Mommy days this afternoon. It’s a rainy, chilly day, or I’d be out hiking.

Happy Mother’s Day to some of my favorite moms!

Woke up to find a restaurant gift card in my inbox from S2. We haven’t even been getting takeout, so not sure when I’ll use it, but we’re hopeful that if things improve here we’ll at least attempt takeout.

DH got me nuts I like, some chocolate, a mug with photo of grandkids on one side and photo of my sons at 3 and 6 on the other. He also got me a 1000-piece mini jigsaw puzzle. This may take me a long time to complete, especially since I definitely need a new eyeglass rx.

He always goes overboard, and, frankly, it took awhile for my sons to realize that they’re the ones who should be honoring me, not just their father. They figured that out sometime in their 20’s, altho I don’t really care about getting gifts - a card and phone call would suffice.

Earlier this week I got a fun little care package of Bonne Maman preserves - little jars in a painted box that resembled an Advent calendar - from D, of course. When you open the “door” there is a fun little saying. Friday a huge box of ranunculus arrived from Bouqs - there was a Mason jar included to arrange them but there were so many I had to break out two extra vases. Again from D. I love flowers and these are beautiful.

This year has been hard. I usually see D quite a bit and I haven’t seen her since March. Mr. Sabaray and I will have lunch with my mother this afternoon - her favorite, fried chicken. D sent her an African violet. Mom’s not the best with plants so hopefully it will survive.

Happy Day to those who are enjoying celebrating and Many Hugs to those for who today is a lesser of a celebratory day.

I am not a “special day lover” at all. This year, I’ll be honest, I can’t wait for today to be over. I don’t like individual attention. My D who has been home for a month was suppose to be leaving today but not leaving tomorrow due to heavy storms this afternoon for the drive back. Just feeling lots of anxiousness over the current situation and worries galore. Also if I’m being completely honest I hate that nearly every FB/social media post is about the “day”. I’ve always felt very conscious about those who would love nothing more than to be a mother (I know many) or who had/have poor relationships with their own mother.

What positive I will bring to the table is not for me, but thanks to my kids who because of them I have had the true gift of a lifetime - being a mom.
