We’re making dinner at MIL’s with two of her other sons and their wives, so 7 of us altogether. Fun times. Our D isn’t coming and S isn’t here, so just calls with them.
We went to see the in-laws who live in the area. They put chairs out on the porch, two on one side, five on the other, with a flattened deck chair in between so no one could forget. I’d told MIL she was under no circumstances to offer tea and cake and we brought or own drinks - I didn’t want her to have to clean up our dishes. The older kids were okay, the youngest one, who is very close to FIL and just wanted to play, hated it. We told them they could stand it for an hour to give the grandparents the pleasure to have their grandkids visit if at a distance, but I did feel so sorry for them all.
Health did by no means dominate the conversation, but H asked them about recent appointments. One has a heart condition monitored, one a lung condition. It reminded me again just why we are making all this fuss. Both in their late 70ies and thus at prime Covid risk, but no reasons why they shouldn’t sit happily on their porch for many years yet and enjoy having their grandchildren around. They deserve those years!
Will FaceTime later with my parents who live over an hour away. We are thinking of whether we could drive for a distance visit there, too. Same age, same health status - fine without Covid, prime risk with Covid.
My kids sang for me, baked for me and painted for me. H made a sumptuous breakfast and we got Thai takeout from our favourite restaurant we want to keep around, so we eat Thai now almost every weekend!
I felt they’d never made such a big deal of Mother’s Day before. H says these days it’s the highlight of the week - nothing else going on. We are all working hard to enjoy what we can.
@abasket So well put. While I’m more in a low-key than sad camp, it’s kind of overwhelming to see all my corners of the internet saturated with “day” reminders. I’d like moms everywhere to have the gift of a day that’s happy to them, whether it’s quiet or exuberant. Distancing and worry have made this year especially poignant.
Best wishes to the amazing moms here!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing CC moms!
From 1983 when my mom passed away until 1998 when I became a mom, I hated this day. It was hard seeing moms with their kids and kids with their moms. That ended, of course, the year I went to China and my life was transformed. Even though it’s been a while since I saw my one and only baby in person, at least we will be able to Zoom today. I am such a lucky mom!
I always said Mother’s Day on a Sunday was a cruel joke. Sundays in our house was the day I had to do all the house cleaning, laundry, Walmart, etc - reset everything so I could make it through the next work week. I hate Sundays! We usually celebrate on Saturdays - meaning I pick the place for Saturday dinner. I am not a flowers person and do not buy me jewelry. The kids usually get me something small or food. Food is good!
I told my kids this year (and forever) not to buy me anything. I would rather they save their money for themselves. Same for bdays. However, I told them once/year I want them to be my travel buddy - on my dime. I also said if they become millionaires, I reserve the right to change my mind.
I did ask them to help me clean the house and purge. They did the cleaning I asked. The purging will take place over the next few weeks. And older S told me today he will make dinner. He’s become quite the cook during his Shelter I place/whatever it’s called
I’ll call my mom, but my mom never wanted anything to do with mother’s day either.
Daughter just texted me to see if I want to go for a walk by the river with her and the dogs (at the back of our yard). Yes!
I will always be a mama bear. I had thought about doing an outside socially distanced visit to my son. But I cancelled it. He lives in a town with no cases. I don’t. If I inadvertently passed on the virus as an asymptomatic carrier I would never forgive myself. Mother’s Day means protecting your children.
Snark: I’m finding that some of the biggest COVID scolds on Facebook are themselves having their children over on Mother’s Day.
So far not going well, both husband and son in long waits for breakfast pickup.
And Happy Mother’s Day to those of us who aren’t amazing but are just winging it! ![]()
My sons got me some very thoughtful gifts this morning. A replacement of my favorite mug that I dropped and broke a few months ago. No idea how they found the replacement because I also tried to find one when it broke but since it was just a $2 Target mug from a Valentine’s Day years ago, I couldn’t find it. But they did, which was really sweet. And they got me a package of the really nice coffee that I love but am too cheap to buy myself.
Youngest son took me to the ropes and ziplining course today and it was nice seeing the families and their moms enjoying being outside together.
And this evening, they’re making me crab legs for dinner, which is especially thoughtful since none of them like seafood (they’re having steak.)
So I feel very loved today, even though I’m pretty sure I’m not one of the “best” or most “Amazing” moms that people keep talking about.
Slept late. Got texts from friends. S17 went out and got me Starbucks before he goes back to studying for finals. D got over being mad at me from last night and told me Happy Mother’s Day (As good as she gets) and we played with her baby for awhile. Husband called after playing golf and is going to pick up lunch for me. I’m going to scrapbook this afternoon and then tonight S’s gf is driving back from Kansas so they can take their finals together here. Kid’s are going to cook dinner tonight and that is it. Very laid back around here.
@Marilyn, I know that both you and I are in the same city. Probably miles and miles apart, so enjoy the overcast that we’re seeing inland and no AC usage!
My Mother’s Day today is composed of going to Costco yay! I haven’t been there in a while but I need to fill my freezer and pretend to shop the clothes. My husband says he can get me flowers from there-ha ha ha ha. (He knows how much I hate the idea of cutting down beautiful flowers ? to have them sit for a couple of days and dry out.) I do like the idea of shopping online for myself. I’ve only been shopping online for necessities and fabric.
I have two (out of three) adult children at home and they have been driving me absolutely crazy. Because they’re not in their grad apartments, they’re forgetting how to do dishes, take out trash, etc. My added fun feature is that I get to Lysol everything and wipe all the doorhandles that they touch! So I would just like them out of the house for Mother’s Day. But, we don’t have that option to lock them out of the house.
My husband finally gets it! He’s tired of doing their chores too! So, COSTCO it is! Woo-hoo!
@“aunt bea” - yes, we’re down on Point Loma so overcast here too. It’s ok; I was in the pool a lot recently. So far we haven’t used AC because we get the ocean breeze from a mile away. Which currently includes a whiff of the rotting red tide/bioluminescence.
Yesterday was perfect weather to wash the car and 40 minutes after I finished, there was a brief rain. So it’s my fault it rained in San Diego yesterday.
Son gave up waiting after half an hour, cancelled his order (it would have been another half hour), and came home where fortunately he had plenty of breakfast foods. Husband had a much shorter wait and arrived home with my pancake flight, and a lovely bouquet from the farmers market per son’s request, including my favorite irises. He had gone by Trader Joe’s and said there were two lines - one to go in the store, and the other to buy flowers outside.
We had a very nice video brunch; I dressed up a bit as if I was going out - except no eye makeup, and I was in slippers. I always wear my mother’s diamond ring on Mother’s Day because she loved going out for brunches and meals.
Maybe I’ll switch my avatar to my flowers for the day.
Trust me @milee30 I don’t consider myself to be an amazing vs not amazing mom. But I think we all can consider ourselves to be amazing on Mother’s Day, even if we are not lucky enough to have a kid or spouse tells us that today. (I had Mother’s Days like that; hello high school!) I am here to tell you and all the moms here! You are amazing!
Called my mom for Mother’s Day and had an awesome conversation! Can’t wait to visit her this summer!
Terrific day here.
The two lads, one DIL, and H made breakfast for all of us, then we played a couple of Sushi Go Party games (I won one of them!), they made lunch complete with a pre-bought coconut cake, and youngest + DIL left to go to FIL’s place to help out with a sea wall (non-stop drive with both sides isolating). Just saw on my phone that they arrived safely. Some smaller stuff tucked in there, of course.
THEN, oldest son who isn’t with us texted about calling. He rarely communicates on any special day, but did today and we had a really nice, long conversation.
The rest of the day is just puttering around as we see fit with some left overs for dinner eventually.
I couldn’t have asked for a better Mother’s Day aside from having my mom still with us.
I love my family… DIL fits in super well too.
So just as our family zoom get together began, I got a delivery of a bouquet of wine bottles from the kids, including the prosecco that DIL used for her cocktail at their wedding almost a year ago! The only thing that would have made it better would have been if the delivery guy actually had his mask covering his nose. But I hope future holidays have the zoom thing - so much better than three phone calls where we basically share the same info over and over!
I had been having a hard weekend, emotionally, and I knew today was going to be hard. No particular reason, I just think 7 weeks of SIP with a full house was taking its toll and I really didn’t want to “celebrate.” After convincing my family that it was, indeed, ok to leave me be today, I decided that what I really wanted was to make what I wanted for dinner . . . and I did! Experimented with two biscuit recipes, poached some eggs, made a quick hollandaise and enjoyed a version of eggs benedict for dinner, together. It was wonderful!
I had one of the better mother’s days I’ve had in years. Probably because I had no expectations and couldn’t be disappointed ?.
H and D20 and D24 made breakfast (blueberry scones, scrambled eggs and green smoothies), then we took a long walk. Daughters and I drove up to see my parents and had a nice visit in the yard (thankful for beautiful weather). Finished the afternoon with a trip to the dog beach with my littlest “baby” ?.
There’s something to be said for having no expectations. Hope the day was a good one for all the moms on CC!
Drank Lambrusco on my deck. A $5 bottle from Trade Joe’s. Enjoyed it, even though it really tasted like fizzy grape juice. Next time I’m upping my price limit to $6.
S and his girlfriend drove 90 minutes to surprise me. They chalked the driveway with a Mother’s Day-themed crossword puzzle (I love crossword puzzles). All the clues were about me or the family. I had no idea they were outside doing this. He faked me by calling me to wish me a happy MD and then tricked me to go outside. I was so surprised. I hadn’t seen him in 3 months. We socially-distanced for a bit and then they were off. It was awesome!
Later, I Zoomed with my 89 year old mother. My brother had done a dry run with her yesterday. I called to walk her through it again. Once she got into the meeting, she didn’t believe she could hang up the phone and still be connected to the meeting!
It was a really nice day. I am lucky.
