opened just fine. My favorite eating out meal is breakfast. I’d be perfectly happy to eat out Sunday…but restaurants around here will be crowded.
Maybe DH will cook?

My plans for Mother’s Day are fluid … but not car fluids!
Dh has to work Sunday morning so i think that we are doing breakfast in bed Saturday. Or maybe breakfast dinner in bed Sunday night? Dh has yoga Saturday mornings, and I hate for him to miss that. This weekend is ds1’s alumni weekend so the FaceTime must be arranged around ultimate games! lol I think it’ll be Sunday night.
It’s my second Mother’s Day without my mom. I visited her and my dad today to avoid the rush on Sunday. I miss her dearly. I still talk to her every time I visit and tell her about our lives and the kids.
It rubs me the wrong way when people call these “Hallmark holidays.” Moms should be celebrated every moment we have with them, and they should always know how much they are loved.
I loved and miss my mom (and dad) too but never needed a holiday to tell them we loved them and we showed them by showing up and bringing them there for them as they were for us. We all show our love in different ways and have had different experiences growing up.
I was thinking about my mom and Mother’s Day. She’s been gone 6 years now. I miss her.
But…I miss her from when she was well. The last decade of her life was so hard with her Alz and caregiving and all the struggles that brought, but especially the last 3 years of her life. I am struck with the irony that we either lose our parents too soon or we face the hardship of caregiving. There is no good time to say those goodbyes!
This is profound. Two parents died of Alz so by the second I should have known that the window of “coherent and present” is very narrow…. but it was so overwhelming dealing with the practical, that there were no proper “this is what you mean to me’s”.
I don’t disagree that we should celebrate “moms” - everyday of the year!
The “Hallmark “ of it to me is the gifts and material side of it that it feels like an expectation. That applies to most holidays FOR ME.
I me happy if the kids check in and call, text & keep in touch because they love us. Any & all days are fine.
I’m thinking that since it’s Mother’s Day and my husband will want to accommodate me
View the chicks at tractor supply and then buffet lunch at the bowling alley! ![]()
Husband says that I’m going to make him go to the bowling alley buffet just so I can talk about it for the next 10 years!
You need to go to the bowling alley buffet to give us a review complete with photos.
When my kids lived at home they liked to make me breakfast. We would many years go to my in-laws to celebrate my FIL birthday.
We will do that this Sunday. I feel badly for my mil as Mother’s Day always was overshadowed by the birthday.
My3 yearl old granddaughter has been telling her mommy she has a birthday present for her. Close enough lol.
DD is pregnant, due this fall. Had to laugh when my husband told me our SIL asked him if it would be a good idea to get her something for Mother’s Day this year. DH told him it probably didn’t need to be expensive, but that it was always safer to get a gift than not! Which I agree with, but coming from a man who hasn’t been much of a gift giver since we got married was more than a little ironic.
I’m not a huge fan of days that celebrate me. We have a packed spring with lots of birthdays (my own included) and of course, Mother’s Day. As adults, my kids are great at acknowledging and celebrating my days, but each year they have to drag out of me where I want to go for dinner, do I want a cake, gifts, etc. I am grateful but don’t like to be the center of attention.
I too had a very disappointing first Mother’s Day with a DH who planned nothing. It didn’t help that I had a 3-week-old and a bad case of the “Baby Blues”. When I commented on his lack of planning, he even said “Well, you’re not MY mother.” (yes, we are still married
) Subsequent Mother’s Day’s did not get any better as far as him planning anything, so as was mentioned upthread, I lowered my expectations accordingly.
My first born just had her first daughter 6 weeks ago. I made a point to make sure she was properly acknowledged for her first Mother’s Day because I didn’t want her to be as sad as I was on my first M.D. She also had difficulty conceiving and had to do IVF, so I have a lot of empathy for women and their partners who have to go through that and then endure all of the Mother’s Day marketing.
My own mother has passed and that relationship wasn’t great but I did send flowers to her and still send flowers each year to my MIL (who, as my DH would say, isn’t MY mother
)
My nephew once gave me roses when I was staying at their home for Mother’s Day. I was very surprised and touched as it’s more than H and the kids do for me for the day.
My H sometimes gives me a potted plant or a snack or cooks dinner. We are pretty low key. The kids often call to check in (sometimes they need a nudge to remember).
My H planned an exciting day of sitting around the house. The bowling alley buffet idea is sounding not so bad LOL.
My husband is not a planner. His sibling is worse and pretty self centered.
His sibling called this week, he’s running a race on Saturday in our area can he come Friday night? Of course.
When he called, I reminded both of them that Sunday was Mother’s Day. No response.
Yesterday my mil called. My husband asked how she was and she replied that she wasn’t doing well, mentally that is. I hear your brother is coming to visit. My husband then went on about his diet.
Is it obvious to only me that my mil is hinting that no one is doing anything for her for MD.? Yet no one is picking up on it.
I don’t want to be Caption Obvious and plan something for my mil when I’ve hinted and reminded them.
It’s my Mother’s Day also. My mil is 100 miles away and my husband has been good about visiting and helping her. My own mother passed away a couple of months ago. I don’t want to spend the day in the car.
I asked my husband if he wanted to go on Saturday. He’s been noncommittal. I know he doesn’t want to spend the day in the car either.
If I loved my mother in law (I didn’t, so I wouldn’t have done this) what about just having flowers sent with a note that says “I love you so much!”. It might not completely take the place of an in-person visit, but it’s better than nothing.
Good idea, the sibling does this.
I already bought her something and my husband has done a lot of handyman jobs for her so I feel like that is plenty.
But it was a nice idea
This is where the whole one day for your mother is difficult.
My husband’s sibling spends a lot of time with his mom. He goes over there and sits and talks to her almost every day.
My husband has gone there a lot this year. Helping her out. Her standards are very exacting, he is doing handyman things that frankly he wouldn’t ever do at home. At the same time her strength has fallen off and she can’t open her back gate or back door and my husband has helped to make those easier. She’s complained about the price of the materials so my husband has shouldered those even though she has a lot of money in the bank. But doesn’t want to spend it.
So not coming over on a specific day when you’ve been there, I see it.
My husband explained that he has something he wants to do either this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. I get it. If his brother doesn’t show up until after, maybe husband will go tomorrow
I see my mother few times a week and speak with her daily. I do all the stuff around the house for her.
I have spent every mother’s day with her. I have never had a MD to myself. I appreciate my mom all year, but MD is one day I take the time out to celebrate her.
My brother happens to be in town today. He asked me if I wanted (do it together with him) to take my mom out for lunch for MD. I said, “No, you take Ma out by yourself for MD. I am going to see her on Sunday.” It will be the first time ever he has taken my Ma out for MD.
H, D2 and I will drive to see my mom for MD. She lives about 100 miles away. Many times for holidays and birthdays one of my brothers will drive her halfway and we will meet for lunch. Both of my brothers live in the same town as my mom. We decided to do takeout from an Italian place that has great pizza and pasta. My youngest brother and his family (his kids are 10, 9 and 6) return from a cruise tonight. They will not come for MD is anyone is sick. My other brother and wife live in the house behind my mom. My SIL has recently been diagnosed with ALS which has been a shock to all of us. My brother is really struggling with his wife’s diagnosis. D2 and I are going to get flowers from Trader Joe’s tomorrow and make arrangements for my mom and both of my SIL’s. I feel so fortunate to have my mom around. She turned 84 in March and is still in good health. I know that things at this age can turn on a dime so I just appreciate this time with her.
