Movie Recommendation - Margin Call

24 hours in the Risk Mgt. Department of an investment bank just before the crash, modeled on Lehman Bros - very realistic. Great cast: Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons. A nice change from the caricatures like Gordon Gecko. Rated R but only because there’s swearing so perfectly fine for high schools.

I ABSOLUTELY loved it! Great acting, especially by Kevin Spacey.

Loved the acting and the low-key way it was filmed, but some of the dialogue was really clunky. However, having Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey and Stanley Tucci all together more than made up for that!

D1 watched it last night and loved it. I have been searching on net, but can’t find it yet.

I have been searching on net, but can’t find it yet.
Its available to watch on Amazon- streaming to your PC, or via Amazon instant video to your TV, if you have a compatible TV or DVD player.

I really enjoyed it. It was borderline too much “David Mamet speak” but that is the only negative I can name.

I thought the dialog was pretty realistic…

The f word is a big part of trader talk.

We just saw it, agree with all the thumbs-up. Amazing that it’s already available as streaming.

dstark, did you read Michael Lewis’s first book “Liar’s Poker”? There was a great scene in there about one of the traders, nicknamed “The Human Piranha”, who swore a blue streak about how the f-ing French were getting their f-ing faces ripped off.

Can’t wait for a movie about chemists. I was somewhat shocked when I discovered that it was a big part of lab rat talk. It was not just a can of ether, it was a *&%@ can of *&$! @@3$% ether. And so on.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching the movie when DH comes back from his trip.

Thanks for recommendation- Will definitely watch!

Bunsenburner…I had know idea that chemists talked like that.

SlitheyTove…I did read Liar’s Poker and it was a great book.

The way the Human Piranha talked…well…it is not rare. “I’m f…d” is probably the sentence most uttered by traders. After the sentence…F…k.

Chemists saying the f word…I’m just shocked.

I just watched it for free online. I liked it, but I think it maybe hard for some people to follow.

Liar’s Poker is a great book - again strongly recommended for those college students who are interested in IB culture.

oldfort- you watched margin call free online ? How ?

The Mamet comparision & swearing reminds me of Glengarry Glen Ross. ( if they took F&*^ out, they wouldn’t have had a script)
Love the actors, I will watch it for sure.
Couldn’t find it for free- I did find it on Amazon.

I don’t care about the swearing. It’s the Mamet-like delivery that gets on my nerves a bit.

I think people who have no idea about what went on in '08 and '09 would probably look at each other when the movie is over and say “what the heck was that about.” To me, it was a horror movie and I liked the way it was presented as such. When the young guy looked at the screen and saw the calculation that spelled doom for his company, he may as well have been looking at a zombie.

Swearing actually annoys me- not that I don’t swear, but why not save it for when you need it?

SJC - just PM you.

I think that Mamet style delivery is how traders talk.

The pace of the conservation is quick…and it goes off topic…and it can be repetitive…

As if you say something fast enough and enough times…it’s true…
If anything…the show was a little slow…as was the delivery of the dialog. (maybe, that is the complaint?)

I remember looking at a fellow trader’s sheets with his risk on it. This was a long time ago. Over 25 years ago…but the memories still comes back to me.

The trader tried to come off as a very confident, successful guy. But I was trading in the same pit with him…and I knew he made some very
poor decisions…was too emotional…and just wasn’t very good.
