Movie recs -- for hubs AND wives?

Just wondered if I could throw out a topic…looking for recommendations of nice movies to rent that both a husband and wife could enjoy watching together?

My hub & I are pretty stereotypically gender-specific in our tastes (me: uplifting romantic comedies, he: action & other guy stuff).

Hub will tolerate an entertaining rom-com, but I recently rented “Before Sunset” – pure torture for your average guy (real-time movie dominated by girl talking endlessly about her feelings – let’s just say the look on his face was the kind of pain I have when catching a snippet of Kill Bill…).

Would appreciate any suggestions. We both seemed to like “The Family Stone” & “Love, Actually” in case anyone else is interested (although it’s conceivable he was humoring me on those…).

H&I like this movie.

[Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005 film) - Wikipedia)

Cold Mountain – bloody Civil War movie with a love story worked in.

Kingdom of Heaven (get the Director’s Cut, which is in a light blue box, not the theatrical cut in the black and orange box) – sophisticated story about the Crusades with lots of medieval war action and a major subplot involving a relationship between a man and woman. The woman’s role was drastically decreased in the theatrical cut, which is why I recommend the longer version.

On the lighter side, consider Knocked Up. It’s a rom-com, in a way, but it’s also a male fantasy (unattractive jerk gets gorgeous, intelligent woman) and it’s full of jokes and lines in questionable taste, sure to appeal to certain types of male viewers.

I love anything with Tom Hanks. We recently watched “The Terminal” (2003?) and H actually liked it.

[The Terminal](<a href=“The Terminal”>http://www.theterminal-themovie.com/)

Romancing the Stone
*You’ve Got Mail/i
*Midnight Run/i
*True Lies/i
I’ll second Mr. and Mrs. Smith
*Ruthless People/i

Oh, I strongly second Marian’s rec for Knocked Up - H & I both loved it.

Lots of other good recs too.

What about The Constant Gardener? ([The Constant Gardener (2005)](The Constant Gardener (2005) - IMDb)) That was one that left us both satisfied. Romance, intrigue (based on a le Carre novel), etc., plus it’s just beautiful to look at.

*H&I like this movie.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005 film) -*

you have got to be kidding-
IMO true love isn’t shown by kicking your spouse while they lie on the floor.

I do like The Ref-( Ransom of Red Chiefesque) but H doesn’t really like movies ( he can’t sit still that long)
We did just both enjoy Into the Wild, he even said he would like to see it again.

The Italian Job is a good one for both too.

Any of the oceans are pretty good guy and gal popcorners.

Consider “men with brooms” Canadian movie about curling. Yes, curling.

Friday Night lights the TV version. It’s an excellent guy and gal program.

I would suggest some of the older Cary Grant films? North by Northwest?
African Queen?
The Lady Vanishes?( a favorite of my daughters)
romance and adventure :)

DD bought “Ratatouille” over Tgiving. Made Dad watch it with us. We laughed so hard that we kept having to re-play scenes we missed!! (We’re FoodNetwork geeks)

We also like “Rent” and a small film that was Oscar-nominated for screenplay called “In America”. It’s the true story about a young Irish family and their lives “in the shadows” in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1980s.

And WashDad, YES to “You’ve Got Mail” and “Sleepless in Seattle”, too (if only for the scenery-- If I never get a houseboat on Lake Union then I want a brownstone on the West Side and a sailboat in the Boat Basin.)

DH watches “Escape from NY” every chance he gets. I’m over it. Snake Pliskin – sheesh.

Looking forward to “Charlie Wilson’s War”.

We have the same problem. We just rented Freedom Writers and we both liked it.

Definitely Ocean’s 11. What about the Bourne movies? They’re not uplifting romantic comedies, but my sisters and I like them. My dad really likes romantic comedies with Hugh Grant, but maybe that’s just him?

“Waitress” is absolutely adorable and sweet, and it would be difficult not to like it - it’s very endearing - especially if you take into consideration the circumstances surrounding the making of the film and the untimely death of the director.

H and I both liked…
“Live Free or Die Hard”
“The Illusionist”
“The Prestige”
“National Treasure”

We recently watched “Reds” with Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton. It’s a biography/history/love story that appealed to both of us.

Husband and I would both second “Into the Wild”. It is a good one to see in a theatre. Also, I think “The Namesake” is just out on DVD. I haven’t seen it, but I loved the book.

I did not think we were discussing true love. I thought we were talking about watchable movie for husband and wife.
I enjoyed watching Brad Pitt and H enjoyed watching Angelina Jolie. :)

Serenity. Sci-fi/western with a heart.

We both liked Rent, O Brother Where art Thou, Good Night and Good Luck.

We both think we’d like to see Lust, Caution despite NC-17 rating. We both would like to see the new cut of* Blade Runner.*

I can’t believe how few new movies we saw this year. Pirates was about it.

We also enjoyed Russell Crowe in “A Good Year”. A funny romantic comedy.
