Movies with college / education ideas/themes?

in 06/07 Sean Penn filmed scenes from *Into the Wild *at & around
Reed College
& Morgan Freeman starred in *Feast of Love *where he played a college professor ( from the Charles Baxter novel- also filmed @ Reed)

Last year’s Sydney White starring Amanda Bynes. It was filmed on three Florida campuses (UCF, Rollins and Full Sail) and was loosely based on Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs. It was about a down to earth legacy to a snooty sorority.

Educating Rita (1983)

There was a movie around 5 years ago about a man from India who gets a scholarship to study in the U.S., comes alone, is wed to a woman from his homeland who joins him in the USA. As I recall, he becomes a professor. It tracks their family through 2 generations, relative to the university systems. Can’t remember the name…can anyone?

Also, there was a documentary about a woman who becomes a teacher to children growing up in brothels. She gives them cameras to film their world. As a teacher, I thought it was the most moving story of trying to effect change by teaching children. Also can’t recall the name; maybe it had the word “brothels” in it.

Finally, Barbara Streisand stars and directs “Yentl,” about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to gain entry to higher level learning.

I just read a review of two new movies that are now in theatres:
Smart People (about a college professor–stars Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Ellen Page from Juno) and The Visitor also about a college prof.

did you hear the story on NPR today about a father who allowed his son to drop out of high school provided he would watch three movies a week with dad? the son is going to film school in prague next year. watching movies, and talking about them (especially with a teen), can provoke a new dynamic within a relationship which benefits both sides. the list of movies on this thread are fantastic.

Paying3tuitions, did you mean the “Namesake”? It was more recent though, not 5 years ago and based in Boston.

We read that for book group
[The Namesake (2006)](The Namesake (2006) - IMDb)

It wasn’t Five years ago- but I’m sure things are moving so fast that it just * seems* like five years! :)

Seeing as how many of the titles I was going to mention have already been said, I will suggest:

“American Pie Presents: The Nake Mile”
and
“American Pie Presents: Beta House”

Two thumbs up…fun for the whole family! :D

Higher Learning - thinly veiled USC but filmed at UCLA
Love and Basketball- Set at USC
Son in Law - UCLA

A friend mentioned to me …

Who’s afraid of Virgina Wolf?

anyone know the setting/plot?

I’m sure that someone mentioned The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and I just missed it.

The rest of these are comedies:

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is just too excellent, dude. Party on. It’s the only movie that Keanu Reeves was ever really good in. Of the same era - Clueless, which is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma. Both are perfect for a middle school slumber party, or high school slumber party if everyone is feeling nostalgic and wants some uncomplicated yucks.

This is stretching it, but the first scene of Young Frankenstein takes place in a medical school (of sorts). One of the funniest movies ever made.

Horse Feathers is the one with the football game, right? A scream.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. “We invented Post-its.” The girls used to watch it just for the clothes, the laughs were extra.

October Sky

I tried to come up with a few I didn’t see listed:

Blue Chips - (Basketball program deals w/ corruption, ethics)
Junction Boys - (TV Movie -Bear Bryant/Bama Football)
St. Elmo’s Fire - (recent grads deal with life after college)
Soul Man - (student fakes being Black to get a scholarship)
Johnny Be Good (HS star recruited for football)
Stomp The Yard (HBCU - fraternity step competition)

“Good Will Hunting” takes place at MIT and in Cambridge and Boston

The Indian brothels movie is “Born Into Brothels” – excellent film

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” takes place at an unspecified New England LAC

“A Separate Piece” – New England boarding school setting

“Another Country” – Rupert Everett stars; takes place at a British boarding school

“A Small Circle of Friends” – Harvard (though riot scene was filmed at Bridgewater State)

“Heart of the Game” – girls high school basketball (true story)

“Back to School” – with Rodney Dangerfield’ filmed at the U.W.-Madison (“Grand Lakes University”)

“The Prince and Me” – another one shot at the U.W. Madison

“My Bodyguard” – high school

“Pay It Forward” – Kevin Spacey as a high school teacher

“Election” – Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick; high school election

“Heathers” – early Winona Ryder; the meanest “mean girls”

“Thirteen” – scariest, saddest movie I’ve ever seen

“Chariots of Fire” Cambridge 1981

Should I even mention “Animal House”???

No need. Quick search reveals its been mentioned 5 times in this thread already :)

Just came home from seeing “21” – MIT/Harvard Med. Enjoyed it much more than I expected to.

ETA: Hadn’t seen this listed, but now I see that the OP herself included it in the page 4 summary…sorry! Well, I’ll keep this up to add in the Harvard Med tag (though it’s somewhat tangential to the plot) :)

Bueller? Bueller?
Did anyone mention Ferris Bueller? One of the greatest movies of all time?

21 - saw it too - better than I expected as well.
