Mudd Frosh Taking Questions

Do you think they will give the CS semifinalists letters of acceptance when we walk on campus?

The envelope will not be fat, but it will be big. So yes, a big envelope means acceptance.

I believe the letters are sent out the last week of March.

I don’t believe they will give you your letter of acceptance when you walk on campus. I could be wrong, though, because this is only the second year they’ve had Corporate Scholars.

Wow. I’m so nervous! I hope I get in. Some people say I have a good chance of getting in, but no one can predict admissions. Yeeee!

Just out of curiousity, what in your opinion distinguishes HMC from other California schools?

We are a small school so we have the feel of a liberal arts college. At the same time, all our majors are devoted to math, science, and engineering, and so we get a top quality, first-class education in those fields that I personally feel competes with Caltech. And even though our humanities and social sciences are as a result lacking, we have the advantage of four other colleges nearby, and so we still get a decent variety to choose from, something that most tech schools like us just cannot offer to as great a degree. Furthermore, the community of people at this school is very unique. Most everyone is intelligent, but we have more varied interests as well, and are thus interesting people in addition to good students. Our faculty is first-rate, another thing that other schools that focus on math, science, and engineering often do not have. Usually you hear of vague and obscure and inaccessible professors in math, science, and engineering fields (or at least I did), but at Mudd they cherry pick the profs who care about students. Make no mistake, other schools have excellent math and science profs as well, but they don’t have them to as common and consistent a degree as Mudd does.

This is just what I can come up with off the top of my head. I recommend you visit us and compare us to other schools to decide for yourself what distinguishes us.

WIll they also e-mail you the decision? Or can you check the decision online?

In addition when are the results due out?

i just got snail mail when i got accepted (i’m a frosh now). my envelope was normal sized and small. they were messing with my head. it wasn’t fat at all!

like this:

oh wait, that was for ED though. sorry, i don’t know about RD

GOOD LUCK! and remember… you don’t have to go to college to make a difference…just look at, um… george washington…yeah…

never mind.

Or you can be like Andrew Jackson (or Johnson). He didn’t go to school at all! :)

Funny little anecdote (to expand on what tiyusufaly was saying about being comparable to Caltech) – I went to breakfast with a friend the other day, and he showed me a “trick” he had shown some friends from Caltech. What you do is take one straw that’s in a drink, then take another and blow across the top of the first straw. Now, with a little bit of physics knowledge, you should be able to figure out that fast moving air means low pressure at the top of the straw, so the liquid shoots up and gets blown onto the person across the table (thank god it was just water). Now, I’m not a physicist by any means, and I figured this out, but he said his friends at Caltech didn’t understand how it worked… and one of them was a rising senior. Go Harvey Mudd :)

lol…yeah i do the dinner table atomizer trick too (that is what it is doing…atomizing the stream by reducing pressure then stripping off a fine layer of water)

if you are really lucky, i will demonstrate to you (at the table) how to measure the electrical charge of a substrate with two forks, a toothpick, and a pepper shaker. i did this in israel and everyone thought i was doing magic. lol.

Wow! Is this what goes on at Mudd? Sounds like fun!

Mudders stole the Caltech cannon right? Now that is fun! Seriously speaking, compared to Caltech how good is Harvey Mudd? I just got admitted!!! and this was my top choice (apart from Caltech from where i got Rejected) and am seriously considering going there. How much financial aid do they give?

At Mudd, I got 16700. Basically, its 46k - EFC from FAFSA/CSS - about 5k.

If your FAFSA and CSS indicate that you need nearly a full ride, about how much of the aid will be awarded in loans?

I have about 5k in loans. It might be different for others. There’s also about 2k of work-study.

ok, not everyone at mudd is like me. i really enjoy doing geeking things like this but not everyone does.

the caltech cannon issue… i was supposed to organize a 20th year anniversary heist of the cannon next month. it looks like someone beat us to it. i don’t know who did it.

reggie, let’s just say that there is absolutely no reason why i shouldn’t see you in the fall. that should answer your question to how good mudd is.

s’vrone, your loan situation will be tailored to your situation. i received 10k/year in loans. your situation may be grant you a near full ride. i know several students who go to mudd on a full ride based upon need-based aid.

Do people work together at harvy Mudd? Or are they always competitive? Also I’d be interested to know how the off-hours social seen is.

I mean, obviously you have to work hard, but people arent ALWAYS working are they?

People work together on homework sets all the time. It’s encouraged, and it’s hard to get the work done without working with someone else.

And no, people are not always working. Weekend nights are often very lively. Of course, if you want to stay in your room and work, or even if you want to just have a quiet evening hanging out with friends, you can do that, too, but many of us Mudders love our parties.

I got accepted as an ED candidate, and has been invited to the Accepted Student Program over next weekend. Is it recommended for me to go, even though I don’t need to decide if I want to turn down other schools?
