Murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO

Is anyone else following this horrible story? Perhaps I am naïve but I am shocked by the suggestion that the gunman is possibly a professional/targeted murder. Today I read that there are messages on the shell casings. Crazy stuff.

The whole thing is tragic and has opened an ugly can of worms about the entire healthcare system.

Horrific and tragic.

Anti health insurer sentiment ran rampant on social media yesterday which is also disgusting.

Definitely seeing it as a “hit” by a hired professional assassin. The question will be who is behind it.

This! The comments were ugly. People justifying the murder, etc.

No doubt we have all had our headaches with health insurance but to applaud this murder was reprehensible.

Any thoughts on the murder of the UHC CEO?

It seems clear that it was targeted not random. Reading different assessments of the skill/training level of the shooter. TV is portraying him as a non-professional and saying his gun jammed after each shot (though he knew how to clear it quickly). Reddit says those are subsonic bullets that require clearing after each round.

Is this a disgruntled victim of healthcare coverage denial? Or is it targeted at the insider trading case? Curious whether this turns out to be a lone wolf or something more “organized”. Hopefully the shooter will be apprehended soon.

I’d say they knew what they were doing. They handled the possible “hiccups” under pressure and finished what they started. If the weapon had a silencer that also points more towards them not being a novice.

My initial thought was possibly a denial of a needed procedure for them or a family member.

I say he’s a non-pro acting like a pro. Subsonic ammo in a properly equipped & suppressed pistol doesn’t cause the failure to eject (FTE) malfunctions the shooter kept having. He cleared the malfunctions well enough though, so he’s fairly familiar with firearms.

So, a disgruntled customer (or relative) with gun skills.

That leaves an awful lot of potential suspects.

100% it was a target. You can see in the video that the shooter was waiting for him and then kept shooting only at him.

Retreating to Central Park was the smartest move this criminal made. They’ll find him, but the lack of cameras across those 840 acres is a challenge for law enforcement in terms of tracking.

The fact that they found words on the shell casing make it definitive that this was targeted.

I think they will find the shooter because the FBI’s investigative skills are very very good.

It was also bad timing on anthem to announce that they will only pay for anesthesia for a predetermined amount of time.

Deleted a comment that I thought might be unsympathetic to the victim

The words engraved on the casings make it pretty definitive that this is a statement killing.

I wonder if the shooter is acting on his own behalf, or is he representing a group? Like a vigilante class action. Or maybe he is a lone wolf but wants to make sure the world knows he was acting on “principle”.

I realize we’ve had assassinations of this kind here in the US before, but it does have a whiff of class warfare and that is scary indeed.

The cold blooded murder of an executive is unacceptable. Period.

This is not the politics forum. This thread is not the place to discuss how health care should be structured. Nor is it the place to share personal anecdotes of your insurance challenges. Posts not in compliance are subject to deletion without notice.

On a related subject, some comments on other social media platforms have been positively shameful; I trust users on this site won’t stoop that low.

But aren’t the questions of who might have done it and why relevant? Otherwise, I’m not sure what we are discussing, unless this is simply to share feelings of sympathy, which is fine too of course, but if it’s for discussion, his profession is likely relevant when it appears he was specifically targeted, no?

Apparently CNN is reporting that law enforcement has a single usable photo of the assassin unmasked. Also, they believe he stayed in a hostel the night before with 2 other people.

Tick, tock, tick, tock…

Sure. But what is there to say on that topic other than the gunman had an issue with Brian Thompson/UnitedHealthcare/insurance companies/CEO’s?

But the posts I deleted went well beyond that, even if part of the posts were acceptable. I’m not editing posts; if part is problematic, I delete.

Spouses and close relatives are always scrutinized as possible suspects in these situations.
