Murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO

If this is the guy, I hope the McDonald’s employee, who called in the tip, receives the reward money.

I would expect they would qualify.

A manifesto! These shooters and their manifestos. Interesting. Although from other shootings (sad we have so many to compare it to), usually the manifestos are left behind by shooters who basically plan to die themselves during commission of their crime. Maybe he wasn’t so confident about his safe escape. This still seems strange to me, though - because he was nimble enough to escape, why did he them make so many mistakes leading to what was a pretty dumb capture while still in possession of the weapon? Something seems off.

So wonder what they are still searching for in the pond. As of a bit ago they were still looking

I’m sure they’ll keep investigating in NYC until there is a positive ID.

I just read that it was “an elderly patron” at McDonald’s who recognized him.

That link from post #331 says that “The man detained in the McDonald’s in Altoona had what investigators believe was a ghost gun — meaning it was put together with parts sold online — that matches the gun believed to have been used in the shooting, a senior law enforcement official said.”

The person of interest has been identified as Luigi Mangione, 26 years old from Maryland. He went to U Penn. I looked him up and he is a dead ringer for the guy in the police pictures.

If he really had all that evidence on his person, it’s possible that he wasn’t that bothered about getting caught. People who are depressed (or extremely focused on countercultural causes) sometimes don’t fear death.

Even odder to me, though. His instagram is still active and you would think it would be full of anger over healthcare or whatever and it’s not. There are a few posts about mental health, but absolutely nothing I can see that would at all indicate any level of animosity towards the health care or insurance industries. (I mean, if it’s the same guy - same somewhat uncommon name, UPenn grad.)

A Goodreads account attributed to Luigi Mangione did post a review of Theodore Kaczynski’s Industrial Society and its Future.

"Mangione was valedictorian of his 2016 high school graduating class at the Gilman School in Baltimore, where he played soccer, according to online sites. High school tuition at the all-boys school is nearly $40,000 a year.’

“Mangione has subscribed to anti-capitalist and climate-change causes in addition to showing he despises the healthcare industry in the country, according to law-enforcement sources, citing online activity gleaned by authorities.”

So again, seems smart enough to get rid of the weapon and the fake ID, no? Weird. Well, we shall see - info is starting to come in quickly now.

Given his background, plenty of people must have recognized him from the police photos and tipped off the cops. My guess is investigators knew who they were looking for within 24 hours of releasing the photo with the mask off but waited until they could take him into custody to release any info.
